Mom uses Coffee-mate (I know, gag) non-dairy creamer. I know it's garbage
but hey, there are some tricks you can't teach an old dog (so to speak).
She says milk or cream just doesn't taste the same. Gee, ya think? Anyway,
I noticed it now comes in Blueberry. Assuming for a moment Coffee-mate
wasn't chock full of junk (corn syrup and hydrogenated oils), would you want
your coffee to taste like blueberries?

They are taking a cue from the coffee shops that have 8 trillion flavors of
coffee...

Gawd no. I can't even take hazelnut, vanilla, or amaretti flavored coffee.
A bit of chocolate for a mocha or some brandy doesn't hurt a bit, though.

I was a little put off when I tried blueberry infused beer too.
Very strange stuff, IMO. But apparently some folks like it.

Are you serious? I can almost understand coffee whitener in a factory to
detoxify industrial strength coffee and make is almost palatable... but
blueberry????? That is about the last taste I can think of to enhance coffee.

Deathly serious:

http://www.coffee-mate.com/Products.aspx

It's listed as a "special edition"; maybe that means "limited edition". One
can only hope

I can't see complaining about a product that doesn't affect you or
your life at all. What's the point? If some people like it, so
what? Does it take something away from you?

Some folks are constantly seeking a venue for expressing their
disaproval indirectly in a cowardly fashion... wouldn't it be more
honest to just say one hates their mother... when people express what
they perceive as picayune faults in those they claim to care about,
especially publicly in a wide spread venue so as many as possible can
hear, then they don't care about them in any positive way. I mean if
you want to express your own preferences in opposition to other
posters I think that's quite reasonable but why tear into someone who
can't defend themself.

Well, grasshoppah, I can see that you have not known many
self-important assholes in your life, let alone those who are not
very bright on top of it.

Why not?

When my husband and I went to Moab, Utah for a mtb vacation we ate
dinner one evening at the local brewery. I ordered some sort of
blueberry beer and it probably would have been fine if it hadn't been
for the whole blueberry - presumably a garnish - that bumped against my
lip and triggered a full on gag.

I can survive fruit flavored or infused drinks just fine but you gotta
warn me in advance about any lumps.

She likes it, you don't. I am sure that you have a technique to
change her mind like you practice in this forum.

Blueberry...doesn't sound that great.....but then again...I can't
stand cinnamon flavor in any coffee. It is a staple at Starbucks.

A subtle blueberry taste occurs in some high-end
coffees. I remember noticing it in a Sumatran
Mandheling. That was a very good cup.

That thought didn't occur to me at all.
You're complaining that someone else is
complaining? Don't you see any irony
in that?

I don't hate my mother. I'd rather she not consume this prefab garbage
because it can't possibly be good for her, and she knows how I feel about
it. It's not a secret.

I just don't understand why anyone in product development would think
blueberry in coffee is a good thing.

No, it doesn't take anything away except perhaps space on store shelves for
something I'd be more inclined to buy. Similar to the thread about spray-on
pancakes; I sincerely doubt the spray has any affect on Cindy Fuller's life
but it was an interesting discussion.

LOL Thanks, Mark. It actually wasn't a complaint, either. I was curious
whether people here would want their coffee to taste like blueberries (by
way of Coffee-mate, blueberry pancake syrup, ice cream topping, whatever).
Just seemed like a very odd marketing choice.

No doubt, some target tasting group thought it was a winner.

As to your mom, maybe all the stuff in that creamer is actually
helping preserve her so she'll grow older in a good way. ;-)

Of course - but I'm more interested in the thought process that got

Yes and no.
Have you ever been to Austria and drunk a "betrunkener Kappuziner"
(drunk capucchino) ?
Put sugar in a cup. Pour dark rum over it. Light it. Douse with coffee.
Put whipped cream on top and sprinkle a little cocoa on it.

Cheers,

Michael Kuettner

I have a great idea.... how about a powdered coffee creamer that tastes like
cream.

You're right about people having different tastes. I hate flavoured
coffees. I stopped using the coffee grinder at the grocery stores because it
invariably ended up contaminated with the wretched taste of those artificial
flavours. If I want an Irish coffee I will add a splash of Irish Whiskey to
my coffee.

But those are all real foods. The Blueberry Coffee-Mate Jill told us about is
an artificial coffee cream enhanced with real artificial blueberry flavour.
Coffee Mate is bad enough on its own. I can't imagine adding another
artificial component to it is going to make a better cream substitute.

Hm ? She just showed the sad fact that some USAns have taste-buds
that atrophied, that they prefer chemical dreck to milk or cream in
their coffee.
To add insult to injury, even more artificial dreck is heaped upon
the original "Coffee-mate" in the form of blueberry flavour.
I've googled the product and am still shuddering.
Call me a food-snob, but a product like that should have no place
in any food-lovers household.
Hey, Cathy ! Another survey ?

Cheers,

I gave up coffees with added flavors long ago. I usually find
that nut flavors get into my sinuses and I can smell them for
several cups of regular coffee. Economical, I suppose but I
suspect synthetics.

Funny idea but I said "nut flavors"!

Depends on the amount of coffee. Or, how you like it. There's
no strict rule.

Sorry. There's a middle school snothead in me who gets out every now and
then. At least she doesn't get out nearly as often as Gregg's.

I've had beer with blueberries brewed into it, not added as a syrup and
such. I wouldn't drink it often but it didn't put me off.

The same micro brewery does jalapeno beer (meant for cooking), raspberry,
mocha and a bunch of standard reds and ales. Seasonal stuff. Another
Halifax micro brewery does pumpkin ale, which I didn't have the pleasure of
trying.

Fruit syrups are very popular in European coffee houses. An orgeat for
example is coffee with orange or almond flavored syrup. An acquired taste
but not as nasty as it sounds.

Torani makes a wide selction of these syrups. There was a hot tub joint in
my college town I used to frequent that had a coffee bar and they had all of
the syrups including maple, mango, apple and even black currant.

Actually, jalapeno and pumpkin (not sweet!) beers sound interesting to me!
Blueberry just sounds too sweet. Ugh.

Really good JBM has a very fruit like flavor I'd say is quite reminiscent of
blueberry.
