Default So Easy a Caveman Could Do It

21:48:00 Saw a picture of a peanut butter cookie on TV.

21:49:15 Read and memorized first recipe I found on Google
http://southernfood.about.com/od/pbc...r/bl30513w.htm
Looked at clock, still before 10:00pm and decided it's not
too late to make cookies.

21:50:05 Oven is preheating to 375F

21:50:30 Was that backing powder or baking soda? Oh heck, I'll
use them both.

21:54:15 Dough is ready!

21:56:00 6 flattened balls of dough on cookie sheet, rest is in
fridge. Pan is in the oven (no, probably not up to
temp yet but preheating is soooo.... 1970.

[Interlude: Wash dishes from Dinner]

22:08:30 Cookies out of the oven and cooling

22:08:45 Discover milk has soured. Pour some Mexican
crema into a small bowl.

22:11:00 Dipping peanut butter cookies in Mexican crema.

Oh great, and now there's sex on TV...

My recipe (which I got from my friend Carey, who got it from a book
she read in grade school) is much easier: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup peanut
butter, 1 egg. That's it. 350F for about 8-9 minutes. Take them
out before they look quite done or the bottoms will burn.

Tht one I could have whipped together in even less time.

I guess the main point of my post, in case y'all missed it, is how
little time elapsed between craving and finished dough.

6 minutes to find a recipe, memorize it, and make it. I'm an
impatient nutcase.

Nah, I'm the same way. And I love it when someone says "Weird, I'm
suddenly in the mood for [cookies|biscuits|quiche|whatever]" and I
can just pop up and make it for them. I feel like a magical being
granting wishes.

Yep! One of my favorite exchanges lately:

James: I think we're out of bread.
Me: Oh, okay, I'll make some.
James: But didn't we need to get some bread flour?
Me: Yeah, but I've got wheatberries. I'll make whole-wheat bread.
James: Damn. You don't just make stuff from scratch -- you make the
*scratch* from scratch!

I was so proud. ;-)

Yeah. I do wheat and rye for bread. I got the grinder as a gift, and
I find the bread with the freshly ground flours is so much better
than with storebought that I do it that way all the time now. I
mean, I buy bread flour, but I grind the whole-grain stuff.

*grin* More for you, I figure. I am aware my food tastes are...
shall we say "unusual"? :-)

My latest weird food combo: Thai yellow curry with pickled onions on
top. I was in heaven.

This is our Serene...no other.

I hope some day to be able to cook with her..she makes it feel like a
visceral pleasure, which it is.

Plus..she just has so much common sense...

Even if she doesn't like dark chocolate with fruit...I will forgive
her that ...

See, that's why I like this "Artisanal Bread in Five Minutes" that's all the
rage, you can have the dough in the fridge, ready to bake a loaf or whatever
*just like that*...!!!

And the dough only takes the time to be mixed and then rise for a whiles, no
kneading, etc....just pop it in the oven and yer all set.

Oh, it's me. The name is a joke from a thread I was in last week on
soc.singles.moderated (ObFood: I told someone that Guy and I do
great in restaurants, because we have nearly opposite food tastes --
was can order one dinner and he eats the meat and potatoes, and I
eat the veggies and other sides. My friend Piglet called me Serene
Sprat because of that. :-)

Serene (and he hates pickles and peppers and I love them; and so on)

You don't like scorched peanut butter cookies? I think peanut butter
cookies are better when they're just slightly scorched. I threw out those
stupid airbake cookie sheets because I couldn't scorch the peanut butter
cookies on them!

Oh, nononono, I dislike the taste of scorched anything. Maybe that's
why I don't much care for smoked stuff. :-)

If the BBQ you're eating tastes scorched, then somebody's not doing
it right. Grilling may taste scorched, but not true, slow smoked
vittles.
