It was a bright and sunny day.
After our visit with Tax Lady we headed to "the other side of the world" (his term, not mine) for my Holy Week pilgrimage to Kramarczuk's Sausage Company to buy some kolbasa and to have lunch in the adjacent caf. I showed restraint and managed to get out of the meat shop for about $25: 2 sticks kolbasa (3/4# each, $5.39/lb this year), a chunk of krakowska (their "famous ham sausage") $6.39/lb, 8 coarse-ground wieners (#5.39/lb), and 1/2 of a poppyseed roll (~$5.25). We had half the kolbasa for dinner last night with some fried potatoes (pay attention, Anthony! It took me about a minute to peel and dice three smallish spuds), diced and nuked for 2 minutes, then fried with some onion; and some canned corn, and a green salad with an oil and vinegar dressing. After getting my meat we went into the dining area (cafeteria style) and Rob had a small bowl of mediocre sausage and sauerkraut (the kraut was good but the sausage was sub-par -- it was NOT "the good stuff" that I bought‹the texture was so wrong) http://www.kramarczuk.com/Restaurant...ge%202.htmland I had a Reuben sandwich. It was a poor excuse for a reuben, built on a white bread hoagy-type bun and nuked, rather than grilled. http://www.kramarczuk.com/Restaurant/Sandwiches.html We also bought two pieces of apple strudel to take home http://www.kramarczuk.com/Bakery/Pastries.html The ticket for all that was about $28 ! Not a particular bargain, IMO. Note to Margaret: They've got *nothing* on Andre!! From Kramarczuk's we took the Central Avenue/Third Avenue Bridge across the river (alternate route due to the collapsed I-35W bridge over the river) and drove through downtown to pick up the freeway there. Our next stop was at the Burnsville Senior Center so I could pick up the unsold goods I'd brought there for Tuesday's sale. A sign of the times: My increased costs necessitated a slight increase (25-50 cents) in my price for my jams. I normally sell at least 80% of what I bring. This year I took a bath. A cold bath. My three loaves of artisan bread (European Peasant Bread loaves) sold (for $5.50 each - a 1# loaf), but very few jars of jams did. People are watching their pennies and dollars, it seems. From the Senior Center we made a quick stop at Tax Lady's place so I could drop off the kolbasa and the other half of the poppyseed roll I'd purchased for her. Then we came home. It was a fun time. I generally have a tough time getting Rob to cross the river (the Minnesota River separates Burnsville from a couple other southern 'burbs and the City of Minneapolis) but I shamed him into it. Sometimes he's so easy. . . . Tonight we anticipate 3-6" of snow; it will be gone by Saturday. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/amytaylor Pray for the abatement of her pain. |
