Thanks go to Blinky the Shark for suggesting that I do a survey about
this - and thanks to nancy also for bringing it up

I wrote it up, BTW - so Blinky is 'blameless' for any errors, omissions

I've never had muddy tasting fish. But then, I've only ever had farmed
catfish. I'm pretty sure the tilapia is also farmed.

Well I'll be dipped in spit, another #1 for Andy

And I was slow-poked about answering the survey.

I'll take the #12 "Improved Reception (Men's)" TFH!

Thanks but I never tried tilapia or catfish.

I'm a mahi-mahi, king salmon, cod, trout and halibut fishyman.

Not sure if the tilapia we get here is farmed or not. But the catfish
I've tried was 'wild'....

Thanks for the survey and it may prove very interesting. The URL
as received http://www.recfoodcooking.com/i does not work
because of the final i. Remove the "i" and it's fine. There are
not enough responses yet to draw any conclusions but I'll look
again later.

Ahhh... maybe that's how I snuck into #1? I backspaced the i after the

You did indeed, and it would have been a good question. However, as you

There are still only 27 responses but I see the mud question on
catfish is still 50:50 and a remarkable fraction of people
actually eat tilapia.

I love tilapia. The stuff I see now says it's a product of Costa Rica; I'd
stopped buying any from China. With the price of catfish (which I also
love) gone through the roof even though it's farmed all around my home,
tilapia is usually my fish of choice. That or cod fillets.

For the record, I suggested a category for "muddy fish" of any *other*
variety than the two mentioned -- so those of you who have had the
experience outside of the limited two choices available would have a way
to report that as well. That would be the significant omission.

I suggested it in response to your showing me your proposed survey and
saying:

"Hope this is OK? If I don't hear from you in the next 8 hours or so,
I'll put it up anyway..."

My "tad late" response was emailed within an hour or so, which seems to me
a pretty much shorter period than that 8 hours you gave me.

I have only catfish once in the last 30 years or so, and talapia
twice. I had never heard of talapia until about a year ago. It's not
bad. neither was muddy, but I did not think much of the catfish.

One fish that I have found to taste muddy is trout from warm water.
There used to be a trout farm near here and it was very good if I
bought it in the fall, winter or early spring, but once the water
got warm it got a little funky.

I believe the "muddy fish" taste is in the eye of the beholder. Of
course, it tastes that way. Some peoples taste buds do not detect
those flavors. Just as some people believe that cilantro tastes like
Dawn Dish soap. I can detect a hint of that also.

I believe that any lamb dish tastes like "dirt". Don't begin to tell
me I haven't had it fixed right. From the finest Ritz Carlton
Dining room to Joe's Stop and Flop, lamb tastes like dirt to me. Other
people's taste buds declare it to be the finest Jamison Farms Lamb
they have ever tasted.

So my my very unofficial count, that's a sighting of muddy trout. I've
also seen here a report of muddy bream, whatever that is. If there have
been others besides those two or the two allowed with the survey, I
haven't seen them or I've forgot about them. If anyone wants to add a
fish to this, stick a reply in here and I'll try to keep a list just for
the halibut.

I apologise, Cathy! I just checked timestamps and I sent my suggestion
*last evening* (my time). I got your first response this morning, and
while I did respond promptly, I didn't notice that you'd sent it several
hours earlier (it was my first mail run of the day). Totally my bad.

Okay, here's a paragraph from the article, perhaps I should have
included it in my original post.

In the test kitchen, we too have noticed a mysterious muddy flavor in
some catfish and tilapia. Our research revealed that the flavor comes
from a compound called geosmin, which is Greek for "earth smell."
Geosmin is abundant in the blue-green algae found in the bottom of the
man-made ponds that catfish and tilapia are raised in. When the fish
swim in the geosmin-rich water, they consume the compound as they
injest the algae.

Do hormones affect the taste of meat. I realize that they are potent
little chemicals, but I had no idea that they affect the taste of meat.
They tend to be present in very small amounts in the body, very very small
amounts.

No problems, Blinky. I've gotten so used to being (give or take) 8 hours
or so 'ahead' of the USA that the first thing I do is check the time
stamps on emails... and DST for various parts of your country can add
some more confusion to the mix.. Dunno if you have installed Foxclocks
on your machine? Useful little add-on. I can see as I type this that
it's 8.20pm in California, 10.20pm in Chicago, 11.20pm on the east coast
USA, 5.20am (Thursday) here - and it's already 11.20am Thursday in
Western Australia....

LOL. I have some friends in Perth... You guys in Oz have a few time
zones of your own too. That's what happens when you live in a country
that's actually a continent

Heard some talk about introducing DST here lately. I hope not. I am
confused enough as it is...

I downloaded that Foxclocks (thanks :-)

You'll be able to set it up to have every state in it, if you want.

It's no big deal. Twice a year you reset your clock. Why, the sky
doesn't fall or anything.

Yep. Nice and easy to use and I have it installed on both my browser and
email client

BTW, my turn to have leftover spag. bol. tonight.... Just defrost,
heat and eat (the sauce part). I'll obviously cook some pasta to go with
it. Been finding all sorts of Italian made dried pasta brands here
lately, knocks spots off the locally made crap.

I'll have to look into setting it up in Mozarella Thunderbird.

LOL!! Italian Sth Africans :-)

We had roasted chicken thighs, with a shiraz sauce/gravy.

Now I've got a prime piece of rump steak sitting in the fridge and we're
taking off in the morning, and won't be back till Sunday night.

Looks like the pooch is going to have a wonderful suprise for breakfast,
if the Kookaburras don't get in before her :-)

But........ I don't care :-)

We're off for an all expenses paid long weekend at a resort.

First business trip in a long time, so I'll have to remember "Can I get
a receipt for that?" :-)

Food, wine, taxi fares, vehicle travel........ the lot.

But it's a pain in the rear and not relevant to life in general

Clocks and watches that receive a signal from a central time
transmitter and adjust automatically are becoming quite
inexpensive.
