Default Totally OT (for those of you who care about such things): My Piano is Coming

I'm really very excited! I haven't been without a piano in my life since I
was 4-1/2 years old when I began taking lessons. That is, until about 4-1/2
years ago when I had to sell my cherished grand and we moved into a small
rental house. Now that we are in our own home, albeit not that large. I've
ordered a really fine quality electronic piano (size constraints), which will
arrive on Tuesday next week. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Kewl! Are you getting just an electric piano or one with all the sound
effects to choose from? MIDI? Sound sampling?

Everyone should play a musical instrument, imho.

Gonna wear a tux with tails for your debut reunion?

The whole works, MIDI, sampling, rythm unit, digital recorder, etc. It
even has a USB port that I can connect to my PC to upload/download
recordings.

hehehe I use to do some concert work, particularly with a friend of mine

Oooh, I envy you! I had to pass mine on to the Senior Daughter when I
downsized (also because I'm not good enough to play in an apartment where
the neighbors might hear).

Enjoy, enjoy!

Beautiful. That's great, Wayne!!! Even has the piano foot pedals missing
from so many other countertop models. I like the ebony wood and upright
appearance!

So how long will you be gone when it arrives?

Yep!

I once pondered writing a software program that assigned sounds to computer
keyboard keystrokes to see what kind of melodies a sentence might generate
but I couldn't decide on a logical layout for the different octaves, sharps
and flats given the less than standard 88 keys piano keyboard. Probably
would've sounded like garbage OR if you learned to play the keyboard for
melodies, what you typed would be gibberish!

Best,

Andy

Thank you, Felice! I used to be, IMNSHO, quite accomplished, but it's
going to take a lot of practicing to regain that "professional quality" I
once had.

Felice, it doesn't matter who hears it or whether it's perfect or not.
It's the pleasure that it provides you that counts. I hope you do play
your piano when you're at your daughters.

Plus, the modern electric pianos have headphone jacks so you can hammer

Damn! Never even thought of that! Maybe I can find room for one of those

Yeah! A tabletop model, with earphones, maybe. The grands, at 8 and 12, are
very generous with the parental funds.

Thanks! I wanted something that both sounded and looked like an acoustic
piano. I've never been that excited about "electronic keyboards" per se.
I also bought an adjustable concert-style piano bench to go with it. The
ebony finish is really beautiful.

> So how long will you be gone when it arrives?

hehe... I'll stay in touch. You really have to "work up" to practicing
hours at a time, which is what I used to do.

Seems I'm always at a keyboard of some kind all the time. Here, of course,
and at work as a systems analyst/project manager. Now, I'm just adding
back a third one. :-)

You'd be surprised at what you can do on the PC to feed a musical keyboard.
Some years ago, back in Ohio, I had a Yamaha Clavinova as a second piano
that I also had connected to my PC. I had a software program that helped
me generate music for the Yamaha. It was fun.

There is software available now, that I would like to get, that will allow
me to compose on the piano, direct it to the PC, and it will generate
musical notation on scored pages. Neat, huh?

P.S., If you interested, I just posted 3 midi recordings I made back in
the 1990s on alt.binaries.music.midi. These were recorded on the Yamaha
sequencer... Fantasie Impromptu, Hungarian Rhapsody, and Nocturne.

I'm glad to hear that. I've known people who played and gave away their
pianos, never to play again. Very sad.

Felice,

Hope you find one! Some are very space-saving standing up on end in a
closet or elsewhere when not being played. So you don't have to permanently
allocate table space.

Best,

Brilliant Wayne, enjoy!

You wouldn't be 10 inches tall by any chance?

Congrats on your new purchase, you will have to let us know how you like
it. Cakewalk software can be a lot of fun.

How fabulous! I love nothing better than the sight of two grands entwined.
What wonderful musical experiences you must share!

In a former life with a former partner, we had a rescued and restored
Kimball theatre pipe organ installed, along with a Mason and Hamlin concert
grand. We literally had the room built around those instruments, and it
was great fun. We also did some concert work together.

Thanks, Becca. Oh, I've had my eye on Cakewalk for some time. I'll

Good for you. I have no musical talent (aside from listening) but often
think how grand it would be to sit down at a piano and do more than find
middle C. Second choice is the violin.

I'm sure you'll be happy playing again.

Thank you, Ed. I'm really looking forward to it. I also love violin, but
the closest I got to it was playing the cello in college.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...........

I just love, love, love the cello. It is my favorite instrument of
all.... I just love that deep mellow sound....

I have several albums of music for cellos...mostly classical. One is
Rostoprovich playing it ...in a cello concerto.....

Christine, swooning...

I think it's my favorite stringed instrument, too, Christine. For years I
played in a piano trio (piano, violin, and cello), variously playing either
the piano or the cello. It was great fun to be a part of that group.

Thanks, Cathy! Actually, I used to sing, even did some musical comedy back
in the 1970s, but I have no singing voice anymore, at least not one anyone
would want to listen to. :-)

Billy Joel played at our "Rocket Room" in L.A. when he was hiding out!

He was such a treat! He wrote the "Piano Man" after our bar!!! I know the
characters he sang of.

Congrats, Wayne. I know how hard it is to be without an instrument. I
start getting figdety when I'm away from a guitar for just a few days.

What brand keyboard is it? I wanted to buy a Yamaha electric piano (88) to
learn keyboard, but glad I didn't. I got hold of a Casio 5 octave keyboard
and practiced for a few weeks. I sucked at it. I just can't seem to
develop 'muscle memory' on a keyboard. No prob on a stringed instrument. I
tried a single 3 note boogi-woogie pattern for 2 weeks and never did get it
down. I finally packed it in and went back to hugging my gee-tar. Maybe in
another life.
