Default Ever been to a Food-TV showcased restaurant?

Questions, questions, questions...

I've been meaning to ask this for a long time but the lazy BUM!!! I am, I
couldn't decide how to word it until now.

Which one?

Where?

How'd you like it?

I enjoy Diners, Drive Ins & Dives for the PIG effect.

Andy
Never been there.

I've been to the Falafal Drive In located in San Jose, California.
The falafal's were great! Also make sure to order the banana shake.

I've also been to the Mad Greek in Baker, California.

The Gyros were really good. Make sure to order the strawberry shake.

A few of them. The Bomber in Ypsilanti, MI, was featured on...
I can't recall precisely. Maybe that Top 5 show. They serve a
gigantic breakfast that was the focus of the segment.

Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burgers in Ann Arbor was on DD&D a few months
ago. It's everything they portrayed.

Zingerman's Bakehouse was visited in passing on some show where
Alton Brown came to Ann Arbor to do a kitchen makeover for someone.
He got to go in the back where they bake stuff, whereas I have to
stay in the storefront and buy things.

As a foodie, of course, I'd already been to those places before FoodTV
found out about them. <smug smile>

I had quite a spell (decades) at Philippe's in downtown L.A.

Can't get enough of the French "double"-dipped sandwiches and HOT mustard.

The 9˘ cup of coffee is pretty great as I remember.

I forget the food-tv show it was showcased on. Should've been the next
question.

Years ago, Les Halles in NYC.
Wonderful desserts! NICE atmosphere and fabulous bar.
Pommes frites looked fantastic but I didn't try 'em

Fast Eddie's Bon Aire was on Season 2 of "Feasting on Asphalt". The
Crown Candy Kitchen was on "Food Finds" I think. I've never actually
been to Ted Drewes, but I've eaten their custard, and that's been on at
least a couple of shows.

There's a place near us that's featured on an upcoming Bobby Flay
Throwdown. (It's been taped but the air date hasn't been publicized
yet.)
http://granvillemoores.com/

I haven't had their signature mussels, but the bison steak and cheese
sandwich was excellent when I was there. The fries were a little less
crispy than I would have liked but stll good. My husband liked his
bison hangar steak and fries. Nice Belgian beer selection.

I haven't been to a Food TV showcased restaurant but I have been to a hotel
in Switzerland that was showcased on Rick Steves' travel show. It was Walter
Mitter's hotel in Gimmelwald. That was back in 1993, years before I saw it on
television. It was very rustic and we arrived there in time to book dinner,
which was to be lamb stew that night. I don't know where we would have gone
if we hadn't planned for dinner there because it is just a tiny hamlet. The
breakfast was good. They had orange juice, strong coffee, freshly made bread,
butter, jam and cheese. It wasn't exotic, but it was a good hearty
breakfast.

Actually, I don't like the Bomber all that well. If I had to
recommend
breakfast places in the Ann Arbor area, I'd have to go with the
Northside Grill or Angelo's. The Northside has a very sensitive
hand with scrambled eggs, and Angelo's waffles are practically
a food group. They also do a very nice french toast with bread that's
baked in-house.

I've been to a number of Houston restaurants on Food TV...

On the Hungry Detective: Goode Co. BBQ, Mai's, and Tony Mandola's

On Food Finds: Berryhill Tamales

On Dining Around (an old show that no longer airs): Americas

Wonder how many people in here have ever *been on* a Food TV show? I know
that Kay Hartman and Dimitri have both been on Calling All Cooks. Anyone
else? (My mom, brother, SIL, and nieces have been part of the audience on an
Emeril Live show--the one with Pat Benatar--if that counts.)

My sister in law was once on Celebrity Cooks hosted by Bruno Gerussi, which is
ironic because she isn't much of a cook.

I've been to the Circus Drive In that was on that show once.
They still have the carhops, and they are known for crab cakes.

And milkshakes.

Did the Stage deli. A tad dry and easily forgettable. I had the Derik Jeter
(#17?). I forget what it was, come to think of it.

Must try! We did a day trip and the subway out there was just too time
consuming. Maybe this July 4th!

Dimitri,

Well that's not playing fair!

There is a long list of showcased food places I've written down! Much to my
surprise, the famous Chicago deep dish "Pizzeria Uno" has a franchise up
the road a few miles from home-base, here in SE Pennsylvania. I'm anxious
to try it out, fat, diet and diabetes be damded. Hope they do it up right,
like downtown Chicago!

Best,

Andy

I've been to Farnum's in Essex, MA. They claim they invented the fried
clam. Don't know if that's true, but their fried sea food is excellent.
Also superb chowder.

Farnum's has a good view of the Essex river and you can eat outside, but,
other than that, no atmosphere.

Spirits on the River (Asheville, NC) Very good place to find an assortment
of Native American dishes.
Rachael Ray - $40 a day

Picnics Restaurant (Asheville ) Same episode. Excellent Southern cooking and
piled high fresh fruit pies

Memphis in May (Memphis, TN) Lots of shows. Not really a restaurant but
great food and well worth going. Come prepared to eat, for a couple of days
straight and

Corky's Barbecue (Memphis, TN) BBQ with Bobby Flay. Good barbecue, not my
favorite style BBQ but good nonetheless.

Cindy,

Corky's? Is that the same stuff I see in the chilled meat section at the
ACME supermarket?

If I'm going to Memphis, it's to take Jill out on the town. Trust the
locals!

Yes, but long before Food TV was there. In fact, they did a segment on
Ye Olde Diner in State College PA. I have dined there before and after
that segment. They have also show cased several restaurants in my home
town of Philadelphia where I have eaten. I enjoyed them all.

I was also fortunate to eat dinner at Emerol's Nola restaurant in New
Orleans once. It was one of the best meals I have ever had.

Yeah, if I'd seen this question last year, that would have been my
answer too. I'm finding it interesting to see other people mention
places on this thread that I wouldn't have thought of myself.

At least we know you're an east coast girl... it's *ride shot gun*...

I've been to Ted Drewes a few times. A must-stop if you are in St. Louis.
It's good stuff.

There's a place in Audubon PA named Zwahlen's that (I think) has better
custard than Drewes.

There was also a custard stand in Buxton light, NC that had the most amazing
custard. It wasn't extremely rich like Ted Drewes but flavor was just
wonderful.

Don't get your hopes up. You should have tried it 10 years ago before the
quality slipped.

Hmm, almost walked into Ye Olde Diner yesterday (visiting University Park
with my son). We decided on the Thai place up the street. It was pretty
good.

I've never cared for that chain, even 10+ years ago. (Last time I had their
pizza was in '93 or '94, in Houston. We stopped in for a bite before going
to a New Year's Eve party later that night. I remember how very heavy the
dough was and how it sat in my stomach like a lump--for days, it seemed.)

It started as a small restaurant and has grown up big time. You can find
their food precooked and prepacked in the freezer section of the grocery
store and in most places their barbecue sauce and dry rub. Though it has the
same flavor, there is nothing like ribs coming right off the hickory and
charcoal.

There ae tons of Corky's around not just Memphis but many Southern States
particularly. There is one in Tunica in one of the Casinos that had one of
the best locations of Corky's that we tried.

Trusting the locals for the best place to eat, out of the way places to
shop, and the best hole in the wall spot for drinks and live music that
dosen't blast you out of your chair.

Cindi
If you ever head down to Memphis you need to spend a little time at the
Peabody Hotel. More than one restaurant, a great Sunday Brunch, and high
tea.

I meant I don't watch those shows, so I *really* don't know.
