Default Really annoying fast food ad

I have no idea if this is a national ad or local, perhaps for a test
market, but Burger King has been running an ad on TV that is annoying
for a whole lotta reasons.

The ad opens with a young couple (20's?) at a BK drive-up window asking
for extra ketchup, extra napkins, etc. Suddenly you hear the sound of
tires squealing and see the couple jerk as though they have been
rear-ended. More squealing and smoke, then they get pushed ahead, away
from the window by a car with a guy who looks smug and orders a steak
burger something-or-other. Then they cut to graphics of the burger and
its contents.

Does that make anyone want to pull up to a BK window? I'd be afraid
some jerk would try to copycat the commercial and run into me! It's not
a very good example/model for young teens who drive badly enough as it is.

No, not particularly.

I drive a 7,000# dually truck, I wouldn't be particularly concerned.

No, not at all.

I like BK's burgers, but they just never seem to have commercials that
make any sense. I think they need to dump the brother in laws
advertising agency and hire a real one.

Any ad that stops people from eating that mystery slime is a good ad.

You have to understand the ad bizz has basically been overtaken by
crackheads...

There are a PLETHORA of ads on radio and teevee that feature LOUD
honking horns, screaming shills, etc....it's like the ad agencies pump
up their kr8tive staff with crystal meth and then say to them, "Make
sure you give the public a HARD sell...". Car ads are the worst, LOUD
rock music, of course these car ads are aimed at young males.

Nothing new, but it seems more pronounced these daze, prolly because
the young demographic they are targeting is addicted to video games
and is thus brain - dead...

Or maybe because, like you, I'm getting older and HATE loud and
stoopid noises...

The one for the new Angus Steak or something like that, which is
actually not too bad a burger. But all the noise and wreckage is a
distraction from what they're trying to sell. It also makes it look
like BK is patronized by a bunch of spazzo food addicts. It doesn't
affect my opinion of Burger King one way or the other, but I can see
where it might not make some people want to rush out to the nearest
one.

BK has had some real losers recently. I despised the ones with the hit man
and this is not any better. It must appeal to 17 year olds.

It would make no difference to me. I'd not be driving up to a commercial;
I'd be driving up to a BK. You know -- that Real Life thing again.

It appeals to me and I'm sixty -- because I hate waiting in line behind
slow pokes. Naturally, it's made to be humor, not a depiction of
Real Life or a driving lesson. But if I were in the commercial I'd
high-five the driver behind them for finally getting them out of the way.

Is your remote broken? No mute switch? No channel shifter? I
couldn't describe a single commercial in the detail you did because I
never listen to them. If I don't change the channel I at least mute
them. Eliminates most of what annoys you about this one. -aem

The Burger King at the edge of town burned down. It was an eyesore for a
year until they decided to rebuild. Then, next thing you know they were
back in business and next thing you know, a few months later, they burned
down again! I don't know of a Burger King within a 5-mile radius from
there.

As of two years ago, the property is a bank. It hasn't burned down, yet.

Agree! That one sucks. How about one that I like? It's a Taco Bell
ad, an eatery I haven't visited in twenty years and it gently slams
the hapless male. Two elegant dolls are seated in a Taco Bell. Sure!
One smells bacon. The other has a bacon-flavored taco in her purse
which she claims will attract available males. Sure, says the other
incredulously. Sure enough three salivating dopes walk up, attracted
to the "intoxicating" aroma. The people are beautiful, the situation
silly, but to me it's funny.

How strange. And suspicious. On an unrelated note, but speaking of
strange, a very busy McDonald's near me has disappeared. I mean
busy. Now there are just bulldozers and dirt. Can't imagine what is
going on there.

I agree on both counts. That "King" frightens
some children. Whoppers are best ordered at about 9:30 am, so they
have to cook them fresh.

That one is simple, the land was worth more that the business brought
in, so they sold out to some developer.

That's the obvious conclusion, but it just doesn't seem likely, there.
Probably right, though, weird to see a thriving business disappear,
one that will surely pop up nearby. They'll have to buy property
and build, too.

Aren't they franchises? Perhaps the franchise owner was old and wanted
to retire and the profit from selling the land to a developer was more
than they would have got selling the franchise. If the spot is
bulldozers and dirt now, something is planned for the spot.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, I can't believe we'll
have no drive-through McDonald's for miles around. I don't
live in a city but I don't live in the sticks, not by a long shot.

No skin off my teeth, I don't go there, but plenty of people do.

It could also be the beginning of a brand new McDonalds. Often it is
cheaper to replace than to remodel. They did that in two locations in my
area. One day the building was gone to be quickly replaced with the new
version.

That's certainly a possibility as well, particularly if they're
expanding to a mega version.

Wouldn't surprise me at all, and I suppose I could call city hall in
that town and find out. It was just an odd thing to see, that place
disappearing like that. It was a big one, with the indoor playground.

There is a Wendy's a block over, they must be slammed with new
business.

I didn't mean to give the wrong impression, I certainly do have the
occasional fast food burger, I just didn't go to that one McDonald's.

That would be far more likely to me, it was that place in that location
disappearing that I thought was weird. Not that any McDonald's would
disappear. Who knows, maybe next week I'll see a bank sitting there.
But there are a number of other properties on that road that I would expect
to see bulldozed before this one. That's all I meant.

Yes, there are a number of places above McD's on my list if I want a
fast food burger. Mostly I try to limit my burger consumption to home
made fresh ground and grilled over super hot charcoal to get the most
bang for my fat and cholesterol buck.

About five years ago the old Dairy Queen in front of the bowling alley was
torn down and for months their section of the lot was boarded up while they
rebuilt the modern version.

I remember seeing the new version, I thought "well THAT sucks!" I liked the
original version much better.

The other downside was it made the bowling alley look that much older!

Probably a newer, bigger McD's with a whiz-bang play area. It's been
happening a lot lately.

One of my favorite Mad magazine strips:

Fast food worker: We've got a "special" order.

Other FFW: I hate those. You have to grab the burgers from under the
heat lamp, unwrap them, scrape off whatever the customer doesn't want
and then rewrap them.

Special version for Bryan:

BK worker: Can you believe this? A burger at 9:30AM?

Other BKW: Boss says we gotta make 'um, they're on the menu.

BK worker: But none of the stuff is out! By the time we get out the
stuff, we'll be way behind.

Other BKW: Let me check...yeah, there's some burgers left from closing
last night. I'll just nuke 'em and he'll never know. Probably too
drunk or stoned to notice.

Probably not true, but makes for a good story.

Unfortunately, some ads are annoying on purpose. They want to get your
attention. It seems to have worked here, as there are 26 posts in this
thread so far.

> Does that make anyone want to pull up to a BK window?

The important thing is to get "Burger King" implanted in our brains. I
think it worked.

There is a saying that there is no such thing as bad publicity. Lately,
there's been a flap about Miley Cyrus (also known on tv as Hannah
Montana). She's a Disney superstar who just got her picture taken.
Said picture will appear in a major magazine:

http://www.vanityfair.com/images/cul...l02w-miley.jpg

Disney is really upset, or claims to be. That's not the image they want
out there. What's the issue? You can't tell how much or what kind of
clothes she is or isn't wearing. Now, we all know that everybody is
naked under their clothes, but that isn't good enough for Disney. So,
Miley has appeared in public showing more skin, but she had "regular
clothes" on, so it was OK.

I think everybody is crying all the way to the bank. There has been
tremendous publicity, and the magazine is putting the presses into high
gear.

You hit the nail on the head, Pete - and FURTHER, it isn't young
drivers who might rear-end someone - it's the old and infirm.

They just can't give up that stupid "king" figure, either.

Not suspicious - just not cleaning the grease out of the grills,
fryers and vent hoods/filters well enough. That stuff catches fire
easily.

It was probably locally owned by someone who retired and moved, or
someone who died, and he couldn't find a buyer, or didn't want to mess
with it anymore, or the owner of the land it sits on wanted to use the
land for something else, or the lease on the land expired, or
whatever.

Happens all the time.

Or maybe it is being rebuilt. There was a McDs near me that I used to
drive by a lot. It was on my way home from the grocery store. One day it
was just gone...then not too much time went by and it was back. Weird.

That is a good one, for sure. "That won't work." Riigghht. It's
what they say on Iron Chef - bacon will win, every time.

For most of us, though, it's implanted in our brains as "never go
there."

I don't know that Disney objected - I only read that (after hearing
some criticism), Miley objected and changed her mind about it being
"artistic."

I wouldn't doubt at all that Vanity Fair was behind the whole "flap,"
since they aren't exactly burning up the newsstands these days ....

A lot of people know Annie Liebowitz and know that she does very
classical, classy work. I, too, thought Miley has probably shown more
skin on stage than she did in the shoot.

Picturing future generations of fat, lazy and stupid aliens.

When was the last time Earth got invited to a universe cocktail party?

Not that I'm pointing fingers or anything.

I didn't mean they'd rear-end you by accident, I meant on purpose
to try to be cool by duplicating the stupid actions in the ad.
That's not the old and infirm's modus operandi.

I know a lot of teenagers, and none of them are stupid enough or
impressionable enough to attempt to be cool by reenacting Burger King
commercials.
