Default unfocused in the kitchen

I didn't have a thought in my head other than getting a cup of coffee when
I went into the kitchen. I poured a cup and then got out a rib roast rub it
with penzeys shallot pepper and granulated garlic set the oven for 350F for
2hours and put the roast in the oven, then left the kitchen. After I sat at
the computer for about 3 minutes I went back into the kitchen for my
coffee. Other than death is there a cure for this, losing one focus that
is?

Couple of questions first: a) have you put the milk in the pantry and
the cereal in the fridge? b) have you ever turned on the oven and then
put a roast in the fridge? c) have you ever got out of your car, left
the engine running and the drivers door open and walked into your house?

If you have done two of the three you are related to my DW. I still love
her though. <VBG>

There are some new drugs for this. Also, trying to increase your
concentration on one thing at a time helps tremendously.

I thought it was the new drugs that were CAUSING this.

I think it happens at all ages. I was particularly aware of it when
my kids were small. There was one door I called "the portal of
forgetfulness" because I'd have a thought on one side... step through
the doorway it to do what I was thinking about, then get sidetracked
and completely forget about what I was going to do until I went back
through that doorway again. OH, YEAH - I still haven't done x!
Trudge back, repeat process.

Yes, you're right...all ages. Even in my 20s I would have to sometimes
retrace my steps to remember what I had intended to do or get.

Ouch. That's bad. Time to start writing notes to yourself. I have a
friend who is in your position too. He bumped into hubby last week
and they talked about getting together sometime soon. Hubby ran
through the litany of weekend obligations, our friend knew something
important was happening this weekend but couldn't remember what it
was. It turns out, not only is it Mother's Day, so DD and son in law
who live just outside Boston were in town.... it was his wife's big
6-0 birthday. Poor guy. He didn't remember any of that.

I need a cure, too, I just lapped the supermarket 3 times filling
my list. Even though it's a store I'm not too familiar with, I still
should have been more focused on what I was looking for. I'm
easily distracted.

Take a few minutes to make up an aisle guide to your store if your
store doesn't already provide one. Keep it handy near your grocery
list. Then you can make up your list sort of in the order you expect
to find the stuff.

I have to make sure I always set my keys in the same place or I turn the
place upside down trying to find them. I went to the market for some bell
peppers, that was all I needed for dinner. Came home with everything but
the bell peppers and had to go back.

I've done that way too many times. The only thing worse is actually
buying what you went for then forgetting to cook it for the meal as
planned. BTDT, too. :-(

That's why God made lists. You think the almighty could remember all the
things He wanted to make without a list? Over the course of 6 days?! NO
WAY.

Then again, if you forget to make the list in the first place....

Or you could set off to make a list and take a shower instead...Or even
worse make that list and forget where you put it. I'm still looking for
the top of my first ice cream maker, even after buying a new ice cream
maker last year. See what happens when you put things away safe?

You are having so much fun with this varoety of experience that I hesitate
to suggest something serious, but I will. I asked DD for Brain Age for
Christmas 2 years ago. I used it every day for a year and these symptoms
went away. (I don't recall ever being quite as vague as you, but similar
forgetfulness happened.) I still occasionally do the exercises, but overall
when testing I find I haven't lost much ground at all. And I don't find
myself in the garden looking for kitchen tools, etc.

I've noticed I'm doing this more frequently, too... Starting
one task, getting distracted with a complete tangential (often
random) task, finishing that and ignoring the primary.
Gahdferbid the primary was time-sensitive...

Meals are often the root cause of mine, too, so I'm often
forgiven...

No cure, though. My GP did get a good laugh when I mentioned it
to him.

Nope none at all

I used to go into the kitchen, fill the electric kettle and minutes
later end up pouring cold water into my mug, never having switched the
thing on in the first place. Done a similar thing with putting bread
into the toaster but not turning that on either.

Then there's putting a pot of something on the cooker but never
switching that on.

Have made any number of recipes, leaving out a key, but available,
ingredient.

Jeez! That's even worse. Hard to tell if I do or not until I let it grow
out again...

Just don't let yourself get off track. Don't try to overlap, even if
it makes you feel less productive. You'll get more done in the end.

Friend set water and sugar on to boil for hummingbird feeder and left
the HOUSE for 2 hours.
(I have given her a clip on the belt type timer since that episode.)
The pan was reduced to a glob of metal, it ruined her overhead
microwave oven - cud've easily burned the house down. Fortunately,
she was about to remodel the kitchen so at least there was no great
loss.

I set timers now for ANYthing on or in the stove. And I never leave
the room if something is on high to boil.

The cure, unfortunately, is caffeine. Good luck getting any.
