I wish each and every one of you the happiest of Mother's Days!

I hope you will all be able to celebrate it in the company of your children,
if not in person, at least in spirit, and have a joyous occasion!

And on behalf of all us test tube babies, I'd like to extend the same
wishes to the Pyrex factory.

Or maybe I should be doing an Alien best wishes??

As a Mama a world of Thanks. But I join you in wishing such a day to all the
others. I am lucky that this year I will spend M.Day with two of my three
kidlets as my SS is with his Mom. But, I will be with my Mama and all my
siblings. Can't ask for more than that.

Indeed it is. And we have opted for Hamburgers and Hot Dogs for family lunch
so that no one will be spending all day in the kitchen and we can spend more
time visiting.

Mom passed away in 1990. She was a special education teacher, and a gourmet
cook.

My Mom passed away in 1998. She was a talented artisan and also a gourmet
cook. After ten years, it is still hard to believe she's gone.

That must have been very traumatic for your husband, Barbara. I can't
imagine losing a parent when so young. I think we expect that they'll live
forever. My mother died in 1998 this past March 31st at the age of 84.
She shared a home with David and me for about the last 5-1/2 years of her
life. I'll be forever grateful for that time spent together.

I lost my mom in 2004. She was one of seven sisters who, except for one,
were all gourmet cooks.

I often think of my mom when making something she taught me or one or
the other of my aunts when preparing a dish I learned from them.

My mom was the oldest of two sisters and a brother and the last to pass
away, in 1998. She was the only gourmet cook and baker of the lot.

I do the same. I could never enumerate all the things she taught me. She
had many of her recipes written down, but those she didn't I transcribed
through discussions with her. I think I have everything.

Obviously your children think of you dearly. Perhaps time to begin
planning a big old-fashioned family reunion.

Thanks, Wayne. I am planning to go north in August for a week. I'd love
to have all of them down here but we just don't have the space for all
of them at the same time.

Reading this thread there seems to be a recurring theme. All these
people that like eating and cooking had mothers that cooked very well.
Did you spend time in the kitchen with your mother?

My youngest sone spent a lot of time in the kitchen with me and also
with my mother, even from very small there is something you can teach
them to do. He went on to become a chef.

My grandsons (8 & 9) live with us and spend time in the kitchen with
me. One is keener than the other, but they both do not mind doing the
drudge work like peeling spuds. They like to have a job to do, not
just watch.

Nope. I learnt to cook out of neccesity. 3 young guys sharing a flat in
Semaphore, Adelaide, aged 15-19. All ended up with food poisoning from
eating out of tins.

First and only time I've ever had that.

I started cooking after that, and it went from there.

Yes, I did, from a very young age. When I was very very youg, around 3-
1/2, my mother was prone to debilitating migraines and fainting spells.
The first thing I remember learning was kitchen safety (sharp knives and
the gas range), and how to open and heat a can of tinnned soup, as well as
opening a can of tinned tuna and making a tuna sandwich. (She was afraid
she would be unable to feed me.) At that time my dad was traveling a great
deal for business. Later, when I was first in school, I watched and often
helped with almost every meal she cooked. At 7 or 8 she encoraged me to
bake along side her when she was making pies, cakes, and cookies. It just
went on from there. I was always fascinated with things in the kitchen.

My grandmother taught me a lot, too. And she would often enlist my "help"
saying she just didn't have time to get everything done in time for a big
family meal. I realized later that she was ofen watching me and offering
tips moreso than tending to whatever else she said was keeping her busy.
:-)

Oh, I think that's great! At one time I was tempted to follow into
professional cooking, but I realized that I was much to pokey to be
successful at it. :-)

They'll never go hungry, that's for sure, and developing an early interest
will encourage a love for good food.

I did spend time in the kitchen with my mom. I also spent time in their
kitchens with my aunts. My mother encouraged me to experiment in her
kitchen. I learned to bake a cake from scratch by age 11. There were
some disasters, but she had the patience of a saint. Through my
experimentation, I learned the importance of measuring properly for
baking and how to measure accurately. It surprises me to learn how few
people know that liquid measures and dry measures are different.

There were lots of spices in the pantry. When I was a little girl, I
would taste all the spices. I think I developed a sense of what they
would go with from that experience.

Mom always invited me into the kitchen to "keep her company" while she
cooked. I think I learned a whole lot by just watching her.

Texas Janet, missing her mom.

Mine has been gone since 1972. My consolation is in teaching my kids
everything she taught me and giving what she gave me. We had a lovely
Mother's Day.

My SO started work at 5am, and finished at 6.15pm.

She came home to a clean house, clean clothes, fresh linen, a chilled
bottle of bubbly, chicken breasts baked in a mushroom sauce, and plenty
of crispy steamed fresh veges.
Same same happens most days. Lately she's had long days (people have
left so the workload increases) but usually, it's just a normal work
day.

When do *I* get a day off??!!

I just don't want to be treated like a queen, though :-)

I don't give a rats arse about this over commercialised fathers and
mothers day...... if you can't show the people closest to you that you
care 365 days a year, and only want to show it on one day... you deserve
to be an orphan.

Same goes for Valentines Day, Easter, Christmas and all the other crap.

I totally agree. You can't treat people like crap or as if they don't
exist all year and expect 1 "special" day to make up for it. Still, it's
nice to celebrate a day set aside for it.

There's only *one* King in Queensland!! Wally "The Emperor" Lewis.

I've never celebrated m's or f's days since I 'left' home at the age of
15.

It was the MIL that got me onto the 365 day thing about 14 years ago.
She detested mothers day as well. She saw too many 'abandoned' elderly
mothers and fathers that only saw their kids on that day, if ever.

I suppose it depends greatly upon the terms under which you left.

Yah, sure. You betcha. I just put a couple pictures on my
jamlady.eboard.com site. My new wheels. :-) We're going to our
country place west of the city to see the tulips and maybe some late
daffs.

Nice ride! And it's a hybrid, I didn't know about this car. How
did I miss that at the auto show.

LOL.. clever phrase.
Not unlike (ObFood) people who speak of just waving the vermouth cap (Or
having the bottle in the same room....) over the shaker when making
martinis.

*Old* Aussie saying!!

Especially used when trying to sell off your old 'bomb'. "Yeah mate, she
goes like a rocket and runs off the sniff of an oily rag!!"

I'll have to try a Martini one day.

Nice car! Very sporty.

My hubby bought his Prius in '03 and hasn't looked back since.

That is so very kind, Wayne. Thank you.

Over the years I have read so many posts about your own wonderful
mother that I want to wish you a day filled with beautiful memories of
her. I know how proud of you she must have been.
