Hello All!
I've mentioned that I try store brands from time to time if it seems probable they can replace name-brand items. Today, I bought a can of Giant Stores "Vegetable Juice", an obvious take off on V-8. It wasn't bad at all even if it seemed lower in celery than the original. Very likely IS V-8... canned in a V-8 facility but with a different label... that it *seemed* to taste a little different is very likely psychological, just like people seem to find Walmart toothpaste tastes a little different from Colgate, yet it's the exact same product out of the same vat, just different packaging. V-8 is essentially tomato juice but with some flavoring added. All tomato juice is made from tomato paste (tomato concentrate), not shipping all that water saves a lot of money... you can save a lot of money too by making your own.... how difficult is it to dump a can of tomato paste into a quart container, add water, and shake... no more difficult than preparing frozen orange juice. your tomato juice will cost you less than half... you can make V-8 by adding some vegetable soup boullion and a pinch of celery salt. Squeeze in a wedge of lime, add ice, worcestershire, hot sauce, and a good glug of vodka and you won't be so fussy about the exact recipe. |

I'm glad I tasted it before I used it in the soup; it tasted *nothing* like V-8 or even plain tomato juice. I don't know what that weird taste was but I didn't like it one bit. It didn't even make a decent bloody mary so I poured it out. Having said that, I buy a lot of store brands. That's just one I won't repeat ![]() Jill |

I buy store brand -- usually Aldi, Kroger, or Wal-Mart -- of just
about every canned, boxed, or frozen item we eat. It's easier to list what we don't buy the store brand of: Duke's Mayonnaise Heinz ketchup Tabasco sauce Pace salsa Somehow only condiments spring to mind. I know I'm forgetting something. My husband is a cold cereal fiend and he is happy with store brand or Malt-O-Meal cereals. Tara |

I've tried different ones from different stores and have learned which are reliable and which aren't. (I've found that a lot of store brands are actually better than name brands.) Don't need to use manufacturer coupons to save that way. Mary |

It's a personal taste thing of course but I have sometimes found store brands that are so indistinguishable that I suspect they are made by the original manufacturer as others have suggested. Some are a little different but not worse. There are several store brands that seems duplicates and Del Monte's used to be good too. I don't think I've seen it recently. I didn't think there was a substitute for Frank's Hot Sauce until I tried the No Name stuff they sell in the local Zehr's stores. They're using, for lack of a better term, runoff from the major brands. Packaged under different labels. Quality may vary because the store brand *may* (note I said may) get the dregs off the line or a production overrun or something like that. But AFAIK stores like Kroger don't have plants set up to can (for example) green beans. Jill |

Of course I don't think major store chains have their own plants but I don't actually know how they produce store brands. I'm not crazy about the taste of canned/bottled tomato juice, but it makes my body feel good. I drink it when I'm rather thirsty, and nearly always drink the whole 64oz can within an hour. --Bryan |

But the generic canned beets are nasty in that they still have much of the skin and the slices are not consistant, sometimes they're just hacked up chunks... they're the same beets but they're not pretty... of course to some no beets are pretty. Some stores buy in such volume that the suppliers maintain entirely separate facilities just for them... Colgate has dedicated plants, warehouses, and accounting departments just for Walmart.... they get priorty shipping and can pay whenever they like up to a year, most large businesses only get up to 90 days, with small businesses they are lucky to get 30 days, some are COD. |

And once you add worcestershire you materially change the recipe to the point that there is no way to taste any difference. The power of suggestion is very potent, seeing a different label is enough make folks think the product has also changed. |

I tried the V8 from WalMart and found it good. Then I tried their
version of Clamato - undrinkable with OR without Worcestershire sauce or lemon or lime or celery salt or . . . But I LOVE that Clamato stuff so I tried the store brand of clamato at my big supermarket. Tastes like the real Clamato at HALF the price. As for the rest, I have preferences but I'll buy the store brand except for a couple things: Lea & Perrin's and French's French fried onions (ALL store brands have been so bad I won't even buy 'em on sale. In every case, I opened the can, tasted 'em and threw them in the trash.) Manwich. (I cook with it instead of most canned tomato sauces.) I have, also had great luck with anything from DelMonte with tomatoes in it. Lynn in Fargo Now I'm hungry again, dammit. This group is not good for an overweight rookie diabetic. |
