I thought gardiniera was just a general mix of whatever is left over
in the garden at the end of the growing season. There isn't any
reason you couldn't add pearl onion to a recipe of your own, as far as
I can tell.

I'd go for the pearl onions. No problem with the pickle, and I love them.

I don't know of any brand names off hand. Some have them, some don't.
I wonder if it has anything to do with price and availability? My local
brand doesn't specify all the ingredients:

http://www.mezzetta.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?

To take Nancy's advice a step further, how about just buying a small jar
of pickled onions and adding some to the other jar?

I had an ulterior motive that I did not mention. Gardiniera
pickles have a crispness that others do not have and it would be
great to be able to buy onions with the texture of English
pickled onions. "Cocktail" onions, tho' certainly edible are not
crisp enough for me! It is possible to buy the English pickles
but I don't know any stores that can be fairly sure to stock
them. I have made my own English Pub Onions but it's a long
winded process.
