Stan & Andy's Excellent Adventure!
Stan and I met right on schedule at the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, PA. It was great to meet a fellow r.f.c-er! First, what did we eat? From Everyday Gourmet Stan had some spiced (spicy?) BBQ chicken and I had a wrap with lettuce, artichoke and something else I forgot. Scott, a friend of Stan who is the owner advised Stan to take LOTS of napkins! And I believe they came in very handy. My wrap was excellent and didn't require as many napkins. It was so big I could only eat half at two sittings. Next we washed it all down with jumbo diet pepsi. And walked. The place is really a feast for the eyes (including girl watching). Stan's been going there for so long he kept saying they're excellent. They're excellent. I should've been taking notes! And we walked to a pizza shop he'd been meaning to try but he said he's had better. And we walked! And we walked to Chocolate By Mueller. Stan had sugar-free dark chocolate pieces and I had sugar-free peppermint dark chocolate rounds. And we walked. I got a bottle of Fiji water. Couldn't talk Stan into water and so we sat down and ate. There was a nurses convention at the convention center and when that was over, the market got packed. We couldn't have been any safer! Second: Stan. I know him from r.f.c but meeting him in person was like meeting an old friend. We got along famously! He a very accomplished man. I enjoyed his company even when we were walking and walking and walking. Walking at the market means you're constantly dodging people standing in lines and supplies. We chatted up a storm. We were there for three hours. He's an avid photographer and after walking me to my train, he was off to see Ben Franklin and take some photos. No food photos. They wouldn't be food worthy, imho. We promised we'd do it again. Thanks Stan. I had a great time, even with my aching feet. I should've asked a nurse for a foot massage, dammit!!! ![]() The End |

The reason why I mentioned that is because our experience meeting at the Reading Terminal is not all that different than those gatherings at Margaret's apartment in NYC. We rfc people get along easily and we enjoy each others' company as if we've known each other for years. Be glad that you went home when you did. Although I didn't get to visit Ben Franklin's museum, I spent another four hours after you went home walking around the city shooting photos of some of Philadelphia's wonderful sites. I think I ended up walking around four miles after Andy and I parted company. Anyone who's interested in seeing my photos is more than welcome to write to me to ask. At any rate, it was nice to meet you Andy. Thanks for the kind words. I am glad you enjoyed your visit with me to the Reading terminal Market. Thanks also for paying for lunch. I will let my friend Scott know you enjoyed the vegie wrap you bought from him. |

Stan, It was a great time. I came home exhausted and napped most of the afternoon. Next time we'll try your other favorites. On the train I realized I forgot to buy my cheese. Probably for the best. Don't want to be fat again! I'll take some photos please and your 2nd Ave. Deli cucumber salad recipe. I forgot to mention that in "What did we eat?" we had some cucumber salad. It wasn't one of their best batches. And that spork made it hard to eat. Best, Andy |

There's not a bad offering in the place. Deciding where and what to eat can be a problem but I see you've made up your mind already. Good thinking!!! Have you tried this interactive map? http://readingterminalmarket.org/mer...ry/restaurants Have fun (how can you not?) Best, Andy |

I checked it out and printed the .pdf map to take with. We had a great time. I got there an hour early and did some shopping at the produce and fish stalls (left a cooler in the car with ice for my stuff). I picked up some Red Snapper and Halibut and some great looking green mussels from fish vendors and some Swiss chard, Belgium endive and fresh peas from the produce stalls. Our outgoing Men's Club pres (I'm the pres for the coming year) has a working relationship with the owner of the deli (Hershel's East Side Deli), so we already knew we were lunching there. The owner came over to talk with us for ~45 minutes. He grew up in the Katz's deli family in NYC and brought a lot of know-how with him. The food was excellent! They make all their own corned beef, pastrami and salads on the premises. They have a smoker and 7 ovens behind the counter for preparing the meats. I picked up some pastrami to take home for the family and some mac-n-cheese at Delilah's for my daughter. Delilah's was voted best Mac-n-cheese in the nation on the Oprah show and whipped Bobby Flay in a Mac-n-cheese throw-down (per my daughter, I didn't see the show). Delilah gave me a taste and it was really good stuff! Regards, Jon |

Pennyaline, What's so wrong being horizontal with a nurse foot (I accidently said food) masaging me with a veg wrap in my mouth in the Reading Terminal Market? Andy Just a food flirt, not a pervert on most occasions. |

I really wanted the macaroni salad from Delilah's, but by the time I got there, most of the merchants were closed. I did get my lamb chops though. I ended up driving over to the Super Fresh on 5th Street and I bought some macaroni salad there to go with the lamb chops. I broiled the lamb chops after giving them a liberal sprinkling of Penzey's lamb seasoning blend. Wow! They turned out really good! |

My dad was in Jefferson a few years ago for hip replacement surgery. I ate dinner at the cafeteria there a few times with my mom. Believe it or not, it was pretty good. Then when I had to spend a few days there as a patient, I found the food the patients are served was ok. Not great, but definitely not bad either. Still, no hospital food can possibly compare favorably to any food from the Reading Terminal farmers market. |

But if it is anywhere as good as the hospital I would think it would be good. So far the hospital has been outstanding. The staff is competent, pleasant and punctual. The main doc spent lots of time with us and answered every question we had and the surgical procedure turned out well. We have a local hospital here that has a good cafeteria. I sometimes meet various friends I have in the medical community there for lunch and they really try to do a good job. > Still, no hospital food can possibly compare favorably to any food from > the Reading Terminal farmers market.
