Default Have you eaten at Sonics?

Sonics is getting ready to open 16 restaurants in NW Ohio and while I
have seen their commercials on cable, I have never eaten at one.
I would like to read your overall thoughts on this chain and what you
like and don't like about it.

Thanks,
Anthony

We have them here, what I do like are their drinks....freezes, shakes, etc,
and the fact that they have "happy hour" in the afternoons about the time
school lets out with 2 for 1 drinks. Other than that, I think their stuff
is good in theory but ours is so nasty dirty and they never do seem to get
the orders right that I rarely go.
Maybe yours will have higher standards for cleanliness!
If so, the chili cheese footlong and tater tots are the way to go!

We stopped at one in the middle of nowhere coming back from an art show
simply because there was nothing else around and we were starving. It's no
better and no worse than a McDonald's, I suppose. More menu choices, e.g. a
"Coney Island" hotdog. Here's the menu:
http://www.sonicdrivein.com/menu/index.jsp

It's the only place I know of that still sells tater tots There's no
inside dining. Think car-hops at a drive-in from the 1950's/early 60's.
Might be good for a nostalgic chuckle.

In Kansas City I saw them and it was described to me as an over-priced fast
food burger. When ya got BBQ Sonic kinda/sorta pales by comparison.

I don't know about other Sonics or if all Sonics are the same but here the
biggest thing about Sonic is the bun. They use oversize buns to make the
burgers look bigger but the meat is the same size pattie you'd get anywhere
else. Hubby has to have one of the chili cheese dogs every couple of years
or so.

I don't know about the price but it's definitely just another fast food
burger. Or hot dog. Or fast food breakfast stuff.

Sonic ice is much loved by several of my friends. It has a pleasing
texture, if that makes any sense. You can buy it by the bag for
parties and the like.

It's no better, no worse than any other fastfood joint. The best way
to have this question answered is to bite the bullet and go try it for
yourself. You'll get a dozen different opinions and answers from a
dozen people, but it all comes down to your own opinion.

They used to have a good steak sandwich but may still be available in
some locations. Speaking of which anyone ever tried one of these and if
so what kind of meat did they use? It seem to have the texture of
something between ground beef and cube steak.

I love the ice from Sonic. I like to get a big diet cherry limeade.
When the drink is gone, I squeeze the limes over my ice and eat it. It
is so refreshing in the summer.

I also like their BLT's on Texas toast, chili-cheese dogs with onions,
chocolate malts with extra malt, and tater tots.

Apparently, you used to be able (in some locations, of course) to get a
beer served to your car. A still from "The Asphalt Jungle"; that's
Sterling Hayden:

....and an excellent film if you like noir.

Eating ice is bad for your teeth. It can fracture them, so be careful.

Anthony...you get to eat in your car and don't have to listen to other
peoples' bad children. Bring your own fern if you are into that
look while dining.

It's just fast-food, and more expensive than the usual places. How
high can your expectations possibly be?

The ice at Sonic is safety ice. That's why it's so popular.

It's funny how Sonic is known for it's ice, and Whataburger is known
for it's ketchup. And I think McD's salt is the kine.

Well, I can always hope for something better.

While in Vegas, I ate at Carl Jr's and thought the sandwiches were
quite tasty. Hardee's is always a good choice as well My favorite
still remains Burger King.

We have them on every street corner here in way-the-heck-south Texas. I
like their BLT. They make interesting drink combos, too.

The food is average fast food I think...but the thing to go to Sonic for is the
drinks! Strawberry or cherry limeade, ocean water, raspberry lemonade and limeade,
vanilla coke, etc. I don't get to Sonic often because there aren't any around me, but
every time I go through Yuma, I am compelled to stop for a strawberry limeade, with
extra lime.

I'd be interested in trying their slushes.

We used to have a convenience store chain in St. Louis called Quick
Shop that had great lime slushes. They were made with potent syrup in a
cup filled with this ice-substance. One of my brothers knew a guy that
worked there, and he reported that the little tiny ice pellets were
made from sugar water, so that the flavor didn't dilute as much as they
melted.

The chain was bought up by 7-11, and the slushes went away in favor of
Icees or some such thing, not the same.

The food is pretty bad. Their commercials indicate that they are
marketing to idiots (like Hardee's used to, and still does to a lesser
extent). They used to only be in the hinterlands, the only fast food
available in many small towns.

They were very sweet, and with lots of artificial cherry flavor (the
cherry of course). As I remember, the DQ's comparable product was
rather similar. It used to be called Mister Misty.

How about In-&-Out Burgers? Ever try them? I had my first last year on
a trip to the Bay Area, and I think they are the best fast food
burgers. I wish they were here in Wasington State, but the crappy
weather is probably keeping them away!!
