Default asafoetida??

This is an ingredient in a carrot, peanut butter soup. It calls for
4 med carrots
4 c chicken bouillon
1/2 c peanut butter1/4 tsp asafoetida
1 tbsp curry powder
salt and pepper to taste

What does it add to the soup? Is there something to use in it's place?
Thanks for the help....Sharon

Hing or asafetida is an alleged substute for garlic, so you
might try garlic. Lord Krishna won't love you but, what the
heck?

Garlic, I think. It sounds like it'd also be a good sauce/stew
for chicken or pork...

Also used to be used as a cure-all (hung around ones neck) back at the turn
of the 20th century. I'm not sure it actually warded off nasties but I'll
bet it kept people at arms length!

It adds a cross between garlic and onion flavours. If you purchase some
don't store it in your house...The smell is Very Lingering and no matter
how you sealed it up it would stink up the place. Store it in an out
building if at all possible.

Wrapped in plastic wrap, placed in a sealed zipplock baggie and then in
a glass jar with the screw down lid tightly screwed down and kept in the
fridge... the odor would still be noticable in your kitchen.

LOL....I think I'll stick with some garlic to taste. I read the wiki
thing, but I don't have any leeks. Thanks to all who replied....Sharon

I don't think I'd want it in the fridge. it is true that when I near my
spice area, I can tell it's there, even though it's in a tightly sealed jar.

I mostly hear of asafoetida being used to decrease certain aftereffects
of eating beand, so I'd have no problem leaving it out of the OP's
recipe. Actually, I don't like cooking such things with peanut butter,
but that's another story.

We keep ours in a glass jar in the freezer. No smell at all.

It sounds like it could be a really interesting soup. What are the
directions for processing it. Do you dice the carrots, or are they
blended?
