Default Where's the peanut oil?

Do you people know something I don't know?

There was no peanut oil anywhere in Shaw's today, but the shelves were full
of olive, corn, vegetable, safflower and you-name-it. The manager was
nowhere to be found and the clerks didn't know anything about it.

The Planter's site is all about nuts, but nowhere does it mention oil.

I've always used peanut oil and olive oil, and liked the peanut because it
is, well, innocuous. So if there's a shortage I haven't heard about, or if
it's suddenly been declared toxic, what do I do know?

You can always find it at CostCo/Sam's, Home Depot, Lowe's, and most
sporting goods stores. I rarely see containers smaller than a
gallon at the grocery stores.

It has been is short supply for some time. I've noticed some stores don't
even bother to keep it stocked, anymore, and the prices have shot up. It's
the gasoline of cooking oils. Try an asian market if you have any around.
You can still get good stuff there.

I saw peanut oil (don't recall the brand) at a local 99 Ranch (norcal)
Asian food market. It was around $16.00/gallon. Too rich for my tastes
even though I prefer it over other oils for frying.

Oh, great. I just switched to peanut oil. Nice timing.

Try your local Asian market, if you have one. You'll find it there.

The only reason I don't use it is that I occasionally cook for a friend
who is allergic to peanuts, and I don't want to make her sick by
accidentally using the wrong kind of oil.

Careful to read the smaller print on the box though. I have never found
anything except blended oil at the big box stores. The only place I have
found 100% peanut is at a local foodservice place.

Around here, (Idaho) you don't find large containers of peanut oil until
Thanksgiving when everyone is about to deep fry a turkey. I can find it at
a restaurant supply store most of the time. The conainer is maybe 2 1/2
gallons for $25-28. I stocked up last year. Corn oil went from $14 gallon
to $26 in about 2 weeks. Fortunately I had just bought a gallon -- my
year's supply. Throughout the midwest and south, farmers can't get crops in
because of the excessive rain. Plan on really expensive food items next
year.

I have no problem finding almost any type of oil in quart or litre
containers at the supermarket, which includes canola, peanut, and corn oil,
among others. Of coursed, there are blended oils. I doh't buy themn, so I
don't know what the blend is.

If you live in an area where people fry turkeys, it's quite easy to find
gallon jugs of peanut oil. Even WalMart carries it. You might check the
sporting goods section of one of the discount chains like WalMart or
K-Mart. Academy Sporting Goods has it, too.

I have never seen 'blended' peanut oil. It's all pure peanut oil.

My supermarket peanut oil contains peanut oil. (And some tocopheral
something.)

Usually soy oil. This is typically anything larger that the quart size.

It is what I have noticed whenever I look for anything bigger than the
small plastic bottles. The large lettering says "PEANUT OIL" and then
the small print reads something like "blend of soya and peanut oils".

George,

I don't deep fry but more often than not I reach for safflower oil. More
better than olive oil, nutritionally, from comparisons, brand depending.

Best,

The Lion & Globe peanut oil is roasted peanut oil. It is not
flavorless or odorless, like many peanut oils, and will impart a
definite "peanutty" taste to foods.

However, that being said, it is extremely good. I make sure I always
have some on hand, as it is good for stirfrying and adding a little
bit more depth to stirfrys...

I learned about it from Deborah Madison's books.

I have that allergy too and it's a very dangerous, strong reaction.

A great many allergies are reactions to proteins, however, not to oils,
fats, etc.

A long time ago I established that I am not allergic to peanut oil
because it's oil from the peanut, not the protein, and saved myself lots
of needless anxiety, as well as got access really good fried things.

Allergies are very specific to persons, and I have no idea whether this
distinction applies to your friend, but if it does, it will be a big
help for her.

All I know is that she's asked me not to cook with peanut oil because it
makes her sick, so I don't.

Pretty much the whole point. If I want "tasteless", I'll use canola.

We buy three-gallon containers of Crisco (or is it Wesson LOL) pure
peanut oil in WMart. The large boxes of oil at the warehouse places are
indeed usually a blend. What's at the Asian shops can go either way.

Not true. The industrial-grade stuff is often blended to facilitate
extended use and to minimise foaming.

I buy large jugs of canola oil at Sam's Club. It is pure canola. I also
found a brand of olive oil there that I like there and that, too isn't
blended with any other type of oil. I looked for the fine print and
didn't see any.

The big brand around here is LuAnn.

How many home users know anything about industrial grade oil?

janet, both you and sw mentioned it's found at sporting goods stores.
is this because they also sell the turkey friers? in the back of my
mind, i'm thinking neat's-foot oil or something.

Yes. Shoot the turkey and then fry it. They also sell smokers and
other outdoor cooking tools. Jerky kits are sold there for deer
hunters. Even if one doesn't make deer jerkey, beef jerkey is popular
with hunters to carry for a snack while they're hiding and waiting for
something to shoot to prove manhood.

Felice,

I see 5-gallon jugs "in a box" peanut oil at BJ Wholesale. I bought one for
deep frying and deep fried maybe three times. I probably threw out 4.5
gallons of the stuff, along with the deep fryer.

Five gallons? Sheesh, I could fry everything I ate for the rest of my life
and still have some left to leave to my heirs.

We've bought that too but it only seems to come in gallon jugs.

LOL hey I do! The stuff sold most often at Sam's is that type. There are
additives so we don't buy it.

Not likely to engender warm feelings for the dear departed. "And to my
grandson, Johnny, I leave approximately 3 gallons of leftover peanut oil
from 2008."

neats = cattle

Meanwhile, Cabela's (outfitters) even sells peanut (although they do say
you can use other oils) oil filters, as noted here on a turkey-frying page
from their site.

You are correct. They sell turkey fryers. grills and smokers in many
sporting goods stores. We bought our 6 burner "Grillzilla" at Academy
Sports.

That may be a regional thing. I have, before me at this moment, my
gallon (actually 1.25 gallons) jug of "Pure Wesson Canola Oil" purchased
at Sam's Club in Brownsville, TX. The ingredients a 100% canola oil.
The front label states" No preservatives"

I also have a 3 liter jug of Omaggio brand Extra Virgin Olive Oil,
purchased at the same store. The label states: "product contains select
high quality extra virgin olive oils from Italy, Greece and Spain. Not a
single mention of additives.

If there were additives, they would have to be listed on the label, right?

Especially since the life expectancy charts tell me I'll be around for at
least 10 years. Can you say r-a-n-c-i-d?

I've never been in a Sam's Club - didn't know you could buy industrial
grade anything there.
