Do you people know something I don't know?
There was no peanut oil anywhere in Shaw's today, but the shelves were full of olive, corn, vegetable, safflower and you-name-it. The manager was nowhere to be found and the clerks didn't know anything about it. The Planter's site is all about nuts, but nowhere does it mention oil. I've always used peanut oil and olive oil, and liked the peanut because it is, well, innocuous. So if there's a shortage I haven't heard about, or if it's suddenly been declared toxic, what do I do know? Felice |

You can always find it at CostCo/Sam's, Home Depot, Lowe's, and most sporting goods stores. I rarely see containers smaller than a gallon at the grocery stores. -sw |

I've noticed some stores don't even bother to keep it stocked, anymore, and the prices have shot up. It's the gasoline of cooking oils. Try an asian market if you have any around. You can still get good stuff there. nb |

It was around $16.00/gallon. Too rich for my tastes even though I prefer it over other oils for frying. |

The only reason I don't use it is that I occasionally cook for a friend who is allergic to peanuts, and I don't want to make her sick by accidentally using the wrong kind of oil. I can find it at a restaurant supply store most of the time. The conainer is maybe 2 1/2 gallons for $25-28. I stocked up last year. Corn oil went from $14 gallon to $26 in about 2 weeks. Fortunately I had just bought a gallon -- my year's supply. Throughout the midwest and south, farmers can't get crops in because of the excessive rain. Plan on really expensive food items next year. The large lettering says "PEANUT OIL" and then the small print reads something like "blend of soya and peanut oils". |

George, I don't deep fry but more often than not I reach for safflower oil. More better than olive oil, nutritionally, from comparisons, brand depending. Best, Andy |

It is not flavorless or odorless, like many peanut oils, and will impart a definite "peanutty" taste to foods. However, that being said, it is extremely good. I make sure I always have some on hand, as it is good for stirfrying and adding a little bit more depth to stirfrys... I learned about it from Deborah Madison's books. Christine |

I have that allergy too and it's a very dangerous, strong reaction. A great many allergies are reactions to proteins, however, not to oils, fats, etc. A long time ago I established that I am not allergic to peanut oil because it's oil from the peanut, not the protein, and saved myself lots of needless anxiety, as well as got access really good fried things. Allergies are very specific to persons, and I have no idea whether this distinction applies to your friend, but if it does, it will be a big help for her. |

I have, before me at this moment, my gallon (actually 1.25 gallons) jug of "Pure Wesson Canola Oil" purchased at Sam's Club in Brownsville, TX. The ingredients a 100% canola oil. The front label states" No preservatives" I also have a 3 liter jug of Omaggio brand Extra Virgin Olive Oil, purchased at the same store. The label states: "product contains select high quality extra virgin olive oils from Italy, Greece and Spain. Not a single mention of additives. If there were additives, they would have to be listed on the label, right? -- Janet Wilder Bad spelling. Bad punctuation Good Friends. Good Life |
