The town our mailing address is in is about 350. I love it there, but
I need the city too.

Thank you again. I hope to travel to the SF area this year or
next year, at the latest. It's nice to know some good places to go
to for good meals. :-)

I just searched and found 305 restaurants in Zephyrhills. I'm sure some of
them are fast food places but there is bound to be more than just one decent
place to eat.

There are hundreds of non fast food restaurants in the greater Phoenix,
many of which are quite good. I've been trying to think which ones I would
recommend. Hopefully, before this thread is dead I will decide. :-)

Meal ticket is at 1235 San Pablo Avenue in Albany.
They were formerly located in Berkeley; if you google
up a Berkeley address it is not current.

I think I've finally settled on

El Zarape
Hanna's
Plank's
Lone Star
Applebee's

The first three are local joints. The last two are chains but they're the
only places in town you're going to get something resembling a fresh
vegetable that doesn't come off a salad bar. There's one place with an
outstanding salad bar but the rest of their food is just not that great so I
left them off the list.

Following up to my own post.

I ate there with some other rfc'ers. We had a great experience, and
tried all of the pizzas, as well as some of the appetizers. They were
superlative... We ate at the bar, and had great service.

I am sorry you had a bad experience...but I personally think that it
was some of the best pizza I have ever had. If you were expecting
other than Neopolitan style pizza, then you went to the wrong place.

It is Neopolitan style, pure and simple..and many Americans are not
used to that style of pizza and compare it unfavorably to the type of
pizza they are used to.

You should see what some mom & pop owners consider to be restaurants. We
mostly have chains like Clocks, Village Inn, Golden Corral, Morrisson's,
Pizza Hut, Sonny's, Lupton's, etc. We do have a lot of restaurants, but
they're either buffet-style, chains, fast-food, the back of someone's
dilapidated house, or they're closed.

I've GOT to take a picture of this fish place because no one would ever
believe it, but the guy sells and cooks seafood out of a falling apart
trailer and has for 30 years. The trailer has car parts in the yard, old
motors - it literally looks like a junk yard. You walk in to the place and
the smell of rancid grease and ammonia from old seafood is so strong, it
sends you reeling. I've talked to the guy's wife before and if *she* won't
even go in there anymore, you know it's bad. LOL.

I think I saw that on Oprah - not that I typically watch Oprah, I just
caught this episode. It was the search for America's best pizza. I think
this place was featured.

Maybe that's the one? - I typed Mexican Cantina but didn't mean it as a
place name - it's a mostly open air affair with a garden area and a stage
plus an outdoor oven.

> Serene

If you live in those parts you are certainly in a great part of the world.
We were supposed to be going to SF until the January storms hit and changed
to SD - what a great city, apart from the driving hassles. It doesn't seem
to get the big wrap that other places seem to get re attractions etc (apart
from SeaWorld/Zoo) We were amazed at Balboa Park and the harbour area. Of
course, you have to tolerate those Chargers but that's a small price to pay.
It's on our list to return to.

Yes; and neither experience was positive.

"Knowing that our tastes and expectations are often different
from many people, we gave Pizzaria Bianco two tries within the
same week. We were so underwhelmed that my wife
uncharacteristically stated an absolute towards any future
business with them.

"Our first meals were okay. While we were not overtly snubbed,
the service "seemed off." The margareta pizza we ordered was
fairly good and so we justified giving them another chance
later that same week.

"The second meal we brought my daughters with us. The service
was again "off". My daughters were the obvious focus even
though all three were well-behaved (so noted the three couples
of gray foxes next to us). This server-inspired bias caused me
to be a little more forward with him. His service improved but
the food was uninspired and flat.

"When we got back to the car, my wife was sure to tell me that
we would not give them our standard three-strikes.

"Mediocre food and poor service are two obstacles that will
make me look elsewhere for dining out."

> I have. It is incredibly good.

There are other choices in the Phoenix area that are better
run, have better product, and don't have snob-hype to push the
Gotta-Go-There attitudes.

OOPs , that seemed to be what the website said

Still Perth with 6,000 managed two 'fancy' restaurants, a couple -
three good sitdown greasy spoons plus a few fast food places.

Our experiences were polar opposite. Mediocre pizzas and really poor
service. I can get those qualities at any other pizzeria, well not so
much the poor service but mediocre pizzas, definitely.

I was well-aware of the type of pizza we were served. It just wasn't
worth the hype. There were too many other choices to try locally to
give it more than two tries.

I still haven't been to either of these places. One of these days...

Sunshine Deli (yeah, it's a deli, but still) on Bancroft at the south
end of UC Berkeley is good, but the service is just barely civil, so
don't look for friendly.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Here are our favorite local cheap eats:

Addis Eritrean, North Oakland: $20 for the Addis combo will feed three
people easily. There's not as much selection as at Cafe Colucci nearby,
but it's cheaper, and we find the food to be better. Plus, they're not
crowded the way Colucci always is.

Bowser's Pizza, downtown Berkeley: Best pizza I've ever had. Better than
the stuff we had at Tommaso's in the city last night, and really
friendly service.

Bear Naked Burgers, Temescal, and The Smokehouse, North Oakland or South
Berkeley (I'm not sure which): Good burgers, decent prices, for when
James just has to have a hamburger

Sura Korean, Temescal: Not dirt-cheap, but really reasonable, and the
dozen or so little kim chee dishes that come with every meal are both
delicious and fun, so it's a perfect place to take visitors. The service
is friendly in the extreme, and the atmosphere is fancier than the price
tag would suggest.

Long Life Vegi & Seafood, Berkeley: One of my favorites since I moved
here. Lots of gluten- and soy-based "meat substitutes", but also lots of
interesting fish dishes. I really like their pork substitute (gluten);
Guy prefers the chicken (soy).

Mt. Everest Nepalese, Berkeley: Really yummy food. Again, not
dirt-cheap, but a really good price for the food and atmosphere.

Acapulco (Mexican), in Alameda. Not part of the Acapulco's chain. This
place has been around 50+ years, and it's the first place I found with
Mexican food like I could get in San Diego. (I haven't tried many places
in the Fruitvale yet, so this place is my fave so far.)

Saysetha Thai, north Oakland, and Tuk Tuk Thai, downtown Berkeley: Good
(not superlative, but quite good) Thai food, reasonable prices, good
service.

Anzu sushi/Japanese, downtown Berkeley: Really good and fresh sushi,
perfect service, extra-cheap. So satisfactory that I've not really been
all that tempted to try Kirala down the street, because for the money,
it may be better, but I already have sushi I like available in the
neighborhood.

Sounds like either Casa de Nopales or Casa de Bandini, but there are a
lot of Casa des around there, all quite good. I like Casa de Pedrorena, too.

I did for most of my life, but I moved to Oakland a few years ago.

Hee! Well, I like the town, and glad you had a good time.

OMG, Langer's is the *only* deli in SoCal that makes a decent pastrami
on rye (and the NYC rfc gang knows about my passion for good
pastrami). El jefe (my boss) and I do rock-paper-scissors when we go
to LA Superior or District Court as to whether we go to Langer's (my
pick) or the Pacific Dining Car (his fave) for lunch (breakfast if
it's *before* court). The food's okay at PDC, pricey, but you can get
anything on their menu all over SoCal. Okay, maybe not the eggs
sardou...

And the other joint I love for breakfast is The Original Pantry near
the courthouses. Their french toast is the only french toast I've ever
had that is more egg than toast! I didn't know until last week that
ex-Mayor Riordan owned the place.

Wayne,

Have you ever been to The Top of Rock in Tempe? It's quite pricey, but a
drink can be had in the bar and you can still get the benefit of the view.

No, Chris, we haven't, but I'll certainly put that on my "must try" list.
I have heard of it, but don't know anyone here who has been. We moved here
in 2000, and I still have a long list of places that we want to try.
Thanks for the suggestion!

I used to live in Lake Wales! If I ever find myself in that part of the
country again, I'll take Lin on a picnic at the Bok Tower.

Bok Tower Gardens was the reason that we used to go to Lake Wales.
Heck, in a hundred years that carrillon tower will likely be like a
lighthouse on a small island.
