We all love to cook but a break is necessary once in awhile. Please
share five favorite restaurants in your area.

Mine are in the SF Bay area and are current, subject to change:

Slanted Door SF
Gator's Neo-Soul Cafe San Mateo
Ceasar's Berkeley
Sam's Anchor Cafe Tiburon
sit outside and watch
the boats
Gary Danko SF

Happy "fressing"

Were you aware that Pasco County has by far the highest percentage of
residents who are practicing nudists? Wikipedia fails to mention
its biggest claim to fame.

Lake Como Club is nice. http://www.lakecomoresort.com/home/

Paradise Lakes is not.

Where? We actually have a sign that brags an elevation point of about 240
feet above sea level. Whoo, we have hills!

Here's a picture of one of the highest hills in town. It's so high they had
to warn us about it. http://i30.tinypic.com/qzlugl.jpg

Yes, actually, LOL, I *am* aware of that. My husband points it out to
people all the time. The only nudist I know of, though, is my husband's
"Uncle Nasty". If *I* could, I'd wear clothes in the shower.

We used to drive up there to see the hill when the flatness was
driving us nuts.
Lake Wales has an even better hill.
We are from St. Louis, the foothills of the Ozarks.

I used to live in Lake Wales! If I ever find myself in that part of the
country again, I'll take Lin on a picnic at the Bok Tower.

Looks like an ancient sand dune to me. If you're ever driving around the
Victoria, TX area there are some giant ones on, I think, I37, headed
toward San Antonio. the freeway cuts through them and they're very
interesting. The Texas Gulf Coast has a series of them stepping down to
where the Gulf is today but they're hard to recognize unless someone
tells you how to identify them.

That's frightening. I live in a city of about twice the size but I
live within easy walking distance of a couple dozen decent
restaurants. Anything from French and Itallian to things like a
specialty Japanese sushi place or a few good Viet/Thai spots, some
decent Chinese and Indian places and not forgeting some of the good
greasy spoons.

Chez Piggy is excellent as is Luke's. Pan Chanco one of the local
bakeries (actually a two story sit-down restaurant bakery and deli)
does excellent breakfasts and lunches. Aces High is an excellent
greasy spoon.

We've got to drive at least and hour and a half in any direction to find
anything decent. It kind of puts a damper on the idea of going out for
dinner. :-(

It's nice up here albeit a bit cooler. We do have lots of water[1].
Maybe you should join us?

Reading some of the posts about restaurants in rfc I wonder if we have
a real cultural difference between the US and Canada or do I just live
in unusual places?

I lived in Ottawa-Hull the nation's capital pop 1 million, and just
from memory I managed to count up 22 different nationalities of
restaurants ranging from a shwarma takeout to something like Chez
Henri where one would take a visiting head of state to dine so maybe I
just take resaurants for granted but I don't remember any even small
town in Ontario that does not have at least one sit-down locally owned
dining place-- quality may vary.

I used to live in the small town of Perth ON, pop 6000, and we had at
least two decent restaurants (one eclectic, and one Austrian) plus a
Mexicali Rose's , a couple of good greasy spoon restaurants that were
great for breakfast and lunchs plus a couple of pubs with decent
food. It was is a tourist area though.

That's how it is at our cottage. Fast food is 45 minutes away and any
real restaurant is well over an hour. But we don't go there to go out
to eat. During the week we're in the city and there's dozens of
decent places we can walk to. But we still hardly ever go out.

Yes but kiliki lives in a city of about 50,000! Hardly cottage
country.

I just searched and found 305 restaurants in Zephyrhills. I'm sure some of
them are fast food places but there is bound to be more than just one decent
place to eat.

There are hundreds of non fast food restaurants in the greater Phoenix,
many of which are quite good. I've been trying to think which ones I would
recommend. Hopefully, before this thread is dead I will decide. :-)

You should see what some mom & pop owners consider to be restaurants. We
mostly have chains like Clocks, Village Inn, Golden Corral, Morrisson's,
Pizza Hut, Sonny's, Lupton's, etc. We do have a lot of restaurants, but
they're either buffet-style, chains, fast-food, the back of someone's
dilapidated house, or they're closed.

I've GOT to take a picture of this fish place because no one would ever
believe it, but the guy sells and cooks seafood out of a falling apart
trailer and has for 30 years. The trailer has car parts in the yard, old
motors - it literally looks like a junk yard. You walk in to the place and
the smell of rancid grease and ammonia from old seafood is so strong, it
sends you reeling. I've talked to the guy's wife before and if *she* won't
even go in there anymore, you know it's bad. LOL.

Bay Area here too.

I'm positive on: A-16, Olivetto, Venezia, Bay Wolf, Ajanta, Sea Salt.

There's a bunch more I could mention, particularly in the
dependable/lower-cost and vegetarian categories (would have
to second the recommendation for Cha-Ya in the latter, but
I haven't been to the SF branch).

Gladly.

But first let me make a minor correction to what I stated
above -- Cha-ya, in Berkeley with a second location in
the Mission district, is unrelated to the Chaya Brasserie
noted by a previous poster.

Cha-ya (with a - in the name) falls into the dependable,
pretty low-cost, vegan category. Herbivore
is good for vegan, with a very large menu, and they do well
on about 90% of what they serve. For high-end vegan,
there's Millenium (SF)... great cocktails and some very
good food but they miss on a few items from time to time.

For dependable, bargain-priced but limited menu lunch-only
seafood there is Swan Oyster Depot.

Most of the vegetarian chatt places in Berkeley are dependable
and all are cheap; of these Vik's and Udupi Palace are good. I
don't have a current recommendation for dependable low-cost
Middle Eastern food right now. For nicer and higher-cost
mideast I like Saha. For tacqueria-price-level Mexican, I
really think Cancun in Berkeley is tops (unrelated
to places of the same name in SF), but we probably
go to Christopher's (in Albany) or Casa Latina
(Berkeley) more often.

A great bargain for brunch/lunch is Meal Ticket.

I could ramble on for longer but I'll stop here.

Thank you again. I hope to travel to the SF area this year or
next year, at the latest. It's nice to know some good places to go
to for good meals. :-)

I still haven't been to either of these places. One of these days...

Sunshine Deli (yeah, it's a deli, but still) on Bancroft at the south
end of UC Berkeley is good, but the service is just barely civil, so
don't look for friendly.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Here are our favorite local cheap eats:

Addis Eritrean, North Oakland: $20 for the Addis combo will feed three
people easily. There's not as much selection as at Cafe Colucci nearby,
but it's cheaper, and we find the food to be better. Plus, they're not
crowded the way Colucci always is.

Bowser's Pizza, downtown Berkeley: Best pizza I've ever had. Better than
the stuff we had at Tommaso's in the city last night, and really
friendly service.

Bear Naked Burgers, Temescal, and The Smokehouse, North Oakland or South
Berkeley (I'm not sure which): Good burgers, decent prices, for when
James just has to have a hamburger

Sura Korean, Temescal: Not dirt-cheap, but really reasonable, and the
dozen or so little kim chee dishes that come with every meal are both
delicious and fun, so it's a perfect place to take visitors. The service
is friendly in the extreme, and the atmosphere is fancier than the price
tag would suggest.

Long Life Vegi & Seafood, Berkeley: One of my favorites since I moved
here. Lots of gluten- and soy-based "meat substitutes", but also lots of
interesting fish dishes. I really like their pork substitute (gluten);
Guy prefers the chicken (soy).

Mt. Everest Nepalese, Berkeley: Really yummy food. Again, not
dirt-cheap, but a really good price for the food and atmosphere.

Acapulco (Mexican), in Alameda. Not part of the Acapulco's chain. This
place has been around 50+ years, and it's the first place I found with
Mexican food like I could get in San Diego. (I haven't tried many places
in the Fruitvale yet, so this place is my fave so far.)

Saysetha Thai, north Oakland, and Tuk Tuk Thai, downtown Berkeley: Good
(not superlative, but quite good) Thai food, reasonable prices, good
service.

Anzu sushi/Japanese, downtown Berkeley: Really good and fresh sushi,
perfect service, extra-cheap. So satisfactory that I've not really been
all that tempted to try Kirala down the street, because for the money,
it may be better, but I already have sushi I like available in the
neighborhood.

I usually try to trim my posts, but this time I am adding on....

Since I am not in the bay area anymore, I have no idea if these places
are still good...but when I was there, I liked them a lot.

Lalimes
Bay Wolf
Chez Panisse
Sea Salt

And one that is now defunct in Berkeley, but was still going strong
when I lived there back in the late 80s: Dakota Bar and Grill. I had
one of the most fantastic meals of my life when I ate there...lasted
many, many hours.

Oliveto was on my list...and I will get there when I get back. I have
a few that I want to try out...like Incanto in SF....

I have other favorites, from when I have been traveling around, and
here at home in Albuquerque:

Joes Noodle House in Rockville, MD
Perea's in ABQ

My mind is drawing a blank now....

Jerry (Jenny Squire) is an enigma that only you can't figure out.
He's the best kook I ever made. And he's persisted for over 2 years
now. He's like an Everlasting Gobstopper.

A fav of mine is the hotel chain at the bottom of my street. In fact I
just had lunch there. A turkey club and ceasar salad. I like it cause of
things like serving the ceasar with lemon wedges so as you can adjust the
dressing to your tasres.
