When I'm traveling, my choice for day-food
is MickeyD's, Burger King, Wendys or Taco Bell. Reasonably priced, always clean, no "mystery ingredients" I've been burned too many times at the little Mom&Pop "out of the way" restaurants. -- <rj> |

I simply don't like the food at most of them, and Burger King is the worst of that list, lol. Even as a kid I didn't like BK. In fact, I never really liked any of them too much, though I did like the occasional morning having pancakes and sausage at McD's with my dad when I was a kid, but that was more about the outing than the food. I used to love Clark's submarines back home, and still love Chinese take-out, but I don't consider either fast-food. To my mind, most all fast food is overly salted, too greasy, and not altogether flavorful. I do go to Baja Fresh on occasion for a cup of tortilla soup, and occasionally, my husband will bring home some guac & chips from Chipotle (which is the only thing I can eat from there without heartburn! lol). I try to be prepared (diabetes), but when I do need something quick, I'll generally stop at a coffee shop and grab some bread-y type thing, like banana bread. kimberly |

I get something from In 'n Out, a mostly SoCal fast food burger chain, about once every six weeks. I haven't eaten at any national fast food chain for 10 or 20 years. But I patronize a local taco truck once a week or so; we know several where the food is tasty and freshly made. And that's it. Other eating out is at restaurants of all sizes and types, but not fast food joints. -aem Oh, I forgot In n Out. I don't really think of them in the same thought as McD's or Bk ...maybe because they don't suck ;-) I don't have them very often, for health reasons, not taste...but once in a while, nothing beats their fries with extra ketchup. kimberly |

Even better is the time I spend with Gloria > relaxing those few minutes in the morning. We have to go to the doctor's for me down in Tampa today. I'm sure I'm going to be hungry after the appointment and there are *lots* of more food choices down there. Last time we went to one of my appointments we ate at...Q'doba's? Is that spelled right? It's a chain, owned by Jack-in-the Box, but kind of run like a Subway where you can choose your toppings for your tacos or burritos. Allan, my husband, liked it, I thought it was so-so. He had about 3 menu items, though, and I only had a black bean veggie taco, so he got more variety than I did. Oh, and we ordered chips and salsa. The chips were kind of strange; very salty and tasted too strongly like lime, IMO. I like lime-flavored chips, but these were over-the-top. We ended up tossing them. There is a true, authentic, taqueria in Tampa, nestled in a Mexican grocery (that has great prices on meat!). I may force my husband to take me there today after the appointment. I saw what they had on their cook line. Yay! Corn tortillas, marinated pork or beef, cilantro, onion, with various salsas. I could really go for a REAL taco. No one in there speaks English and nothing on any product in the store is written in English - it's all imported. It's a true Mexican market; the folks look at you funny when you walk in if you're caucasion. It is a little difficult in the check-out line, but my husband can speak enough Spanish (he is a carpenter and works with Mexicans and Cubans on a regular basis) to get us through. The produce in that market is unbelievable....I've never seen some of it in my life, but I can't tell what it is because everything is in Spanish. LOL. The one time we went to this place, my eyes were opened. I'm enamored with the thought of going back again. kili |

Which ones have the better cooks??? Yes you did. LOL! I've seen two different McDs. The newest one, couldn't correctly assemble a sausage egg muffin. One looked like someone had taken a bite out of it. RETURN! There was no effective management or training and it was slow. Twice in a row, weeks apart they couldn't correctly fill an order. They hire high school drop outs. Slovenly, fat and stupid. Watching them count out change was painful. The other McD's in the next town over, ran like a well greased machine. Andy |

I haven't read through all the postings, but I didn't see any mention

At one time in the greater Cleveland area they seemed almost as common as McDonald's, although they were under the name of "Manner's Big Boy" at that time. I *used* to love the french onion soup there, but they've gone and ruined it, unfortunately. When they have it, the roasted tomato bisque is delicious. Since expanding, at least here in San Diego, the quality has suffered noticeably, but they still have alot to offer. Don't know that I would categorize them as fast food, more like chain restaurant :-) They do have good coffee, but if you get a cappuccino, make sure to tell them lightly sweetened, or else you'll get a cup of syrup :P kimberly |

Many (if not most) have, indeed, closed. Where there used to be numerous locations in the Cleveland/Akron area, there is only one in Cleveland now. I don't know about Akron. The one remaining here in Phoenix when we moved here in 2000 was really horrible. Nothing at all like the quality of food they served back in Cleveland. It closed shortly thereafter. It is now a restaurant called "The Feed Bag", which has several locations here (local chain). :-) -- Wayne Boatwright ------------------------------------------- Thursday, 06(VI)/19(XIX)/08(MMVIII) ------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------- 'There are too many people, and too few human beings' - Robert Zend ------------------------------------------- |

The only reason I know from Bob's Big Boy is that it's the more 'upscale' restaurant at the Parkway rest area. Putting fast food places in the rest stops was a fine idea, they used to have sort of questionable cafeteria like places where I'd be afraid to order any actual food. Like it or not, there's a comfort level in seeing a Burger King or something when you're at a pit stop. nancy |
