Default Solstice

So many moments of significance happened this week: My anniversary, my
birthday (and Alan's and evergene's), Juneteenth.

But today slipped by almost without my noticing. It's the solstice
ya'll. I had a bacon/cheese dog at the Spot bar down on the square
with some friends. Hardly a celebration, but I did go swimming this
afternoon if that counts for anything summery.

Bacon update: The pork belly chunks continue their cure in the
refrigerator. This is their third day in the salt and stuff. Four
days till I smoke 'em.

That's because you're used to it being on the 21st. Leap year can
throw you for a loop.

We had a lovely Solstice party, even though the house was SO ****ing hot
that I was handing out icewater-soaked washcloths to people as they arrived.

Speaking of bacon, Carin was on NPR to talk about her Baconhenge
creation. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=91724551

It's 104F/40C in my bedroom right now. (That end of the apartment isn't
air-conditioned; I sleep on a comfy fold-out couch/bed in the living
room when it's like this.) I'll venture out when the weather changes.
I did spend all afternoon, yesterday, doing this and that over in
Hollywood, in my friend's non-AC car. Whew.

Two words: Seven-foot ceiling.

Not necessarily, many ceilings today are 7, 7 1/2, and some new homes
actually have 8 foot ceilings, imagine that. I think the builders are
trying to save on costs and I reckon an extra foot of drywall all around
must be very expensive. Shoot, I've got friends who visit that would
almost have to duck to get in a 7 foot ceiling. One is 6'6" and both his
sons are over 6'9". Look out ceiling fan.

We're in a converted basement. We love the place, but we're under six
feet tall. Our tallest friend can stand up in here, but he has to duck
the track lighting that hangs down 8 inches or so; likewise the beam in
the middle of the common room.

I spent the evening of the solstice attending the city *** pride parade.
It was ok this year, just minus the G.O.A.L. officers.

Summer might finally be coming to Seattle, after a wet and cool spring.
We celebrated the solstice with our neighbors. Their exchange student
went back to Japan today, and their daughter went to Camp Orkila for her
counselor training. Friday night we had Thai takeout in the backyard.
Yesterday they had a backyard BBQ lunch with many known teenagers. Last
night on the way to the Symphony SO and I went to Casa del Mojito for
dinner, but we drank iced tea.
