Two funny things about this story. First, it's in the Business
section, and second, it's major tip is "learn to cook." -aem

Yeah, me too.

A new market is opening here this week: it is one of the series of
Ranch markets that exist in Phoenix. It is a huge mexican market, and
the prices are usually extremely good. One more place to save
money...

I have this to add: Shopping where people of that ethnicity shop
doesn't necessarily mean shopping in ethnic stores. Example: The Cub
Foods nearest to me (in South Minneapolis) has a whole lot of products
made by Mexican companies (mostly made in Texas, I think.) Also a
couple of brands of tortillas made in the Twin Cities (plus at least
one from Oregon.)

Just curious, would you or do you go around the store looking
for items expiring that day so you can ask a clerk for half off?

I don't, but occasionally, I will notice something that is at its date
or a day before and *already* marked down to a very low price, and if
I'm able to cook it that night, I buy it.

I have no problem with that, I'd do the same. And I have no problem
with people taking it to customer service and asking for a discount,
I was curious if people would do that because I'm way too shy,
myself. Heh. I would live without those cream puffs rather than
do that. Just me.

Another good example would be El Costco (and El Targeto).

when i moved out here to azusa, i discovered that there were at least
5 hispanic type markets within 2 miles. when the flyers arrive,
either in the mail, or as an insert in the elay times, i pick out the
best prices.

here in the san gabriel valley, if you want "really fresh fish" you go
to one of the asian supermarkets and point to the fish in the tank,
that is still swimming around, and the fish guy will kill it & filet
for you or, stick the fish in a plastic bag for you to take home and
do it yourself.

No, but I do keep an eye out for the mark downs.

I went in one day and saw lamb chops that were dated to expire the next day.
I went back the next day and got them for half price. Seems like our market
does not move veal chops and lamb chops all that fast so I have a bunch of
them in the freezer that were cheap.

I do that with all the sales ads. Most of them have their ads online,
and I can usually peruse them the night before the they become
effective. I would think you could do that with some of the sales
circulars of the Hispanic markets too. I know some of them have their
ads online. Gigante was one, I think..and I think it is in that
area, if I am not mistaken. I can't remember the names of the other
markets.

That is exactly how we get the majority of our best lamb chop meals. Not
many folks in this town eat lamb, I guess? We buy it almost always
marked way down and just as my mother did, we toss it in the freezer
until we have enough small packages for a meal.

I've found that the real bargains aren't in the flyers. For example,
my local Cub (South Minneapolis, near Lake & Hiawatha) has an area of
shelves for $1.00 items. The green tea I found there (100 teabags)
probably isn't the highest quality, of course.

In the meat department: three pounds of bacon ends and pieces for
$4.99. I prefer ends and pieces to better bacon. But since I use
bacon in small amounts, I'm not sure if it would really be a bargain
for me.

I used to get those, and they used to be $3.29 for those three-pound
boxes. Farmer John ends and pieces. I don't see them any more.

Use in small amounts? Freezer.

No, I never have, but here the clerk would blow me a raspberry anyway. I
cannot imagine menu planning that revolved around finding out of date foods
to buy for half price.

My definition of gourmet and theirs are two things entirely different.
Store made cream puffs don't seem gourmet to me, even if they aren't
overaged, and pricey steaks are just ... steaks.

I don't have to, but if I'm not going to, I don't buy it. I recognize
that my food-safety neuroses are neurotic, but I figure it doesn't hurt
anything if I just don't buy stuff that I'm iffy about, and one of the
things I'm iffy about is eating meat that's past its date.

We eat so little meat that it's not really an issue. I just bought 15
chicken thighs for 99 cents a pound, and that will last us approximately
two months, because I make 3-4 thighs for a meal, and we eat chicken
maybe once every two weeks, not counting things like our Solstice party.
(For the solstice party, I ended up making something like 60 or 70
thighs, and we've been eating the leftovers for two days. James makes
the BEST chicken salad.)

My regular grocery always seems to make down meats near expiration
date and the produce department does the same with fruits and
vegetables. Sometimes they do not seem to know what is ripe or too
ripe. They have no idea about kiwi fruit and I have no intention of
educating them since they are prone to pack 6 or 8 in a tray and price
them at $.99. They are often a week away from ripe.

I would have to go to customer service, I know the cashier
doesn't have the authority. Can you imagine the people in
line behind me if I had them call over a supervisor? Heh.

It's just not something I would want to do. Of course if it's
already marked down, that's no problem.

Sometimes I see a manager special sticker on meat, and if
it looks good I might buy it even if it wasn't on my list. I picked
up a large package of enormous chicken drumsticks a few
weeks ago, with the $2 off sticker it was about $3.

The foods are not out of date but the expiration date is either today
or tomorrow.

I often change the menu if I see something that looks really good.
Yesterday we went to the grocery store since ground chuck was on sale
for $1.78/lb in 5 lb. packages, so we bought it since I need to make a
casserole for my cousin. Will make 2 casseroles, we made hamburgers
for the two of us for dinner last night and I will freeze the rest.

They also had store brand sugar on sale for a 4 lb bag of pure cane
sugar. I pick up 4 bags and will go back again during the week.

The total bill was around $75 and according to the register tape we
saved $35 with our advantage card and coupons. The receipt also says
that we have saved $330 this year. They obviously have not had a BOGO
sale on coffee this year.

What was the sale price?
Egg prices have dropped some since $2.23 a dozen in March.

My store doesn't have a used meat bin. In fact, if John The Meat Guy
noticed the veal and lamb weren't moving, he'd cut HIS order so as to
not be ditching as much.

I keep an eye out for those manager's specials at my grocery store,
too. Meat, produce, bread, and milk are marked down regularly. I
have never had a problem with anything going bad before we eat it.

I don't shop at Whole Foods because it's not convenient to get to and
it's expensive, but if all of them sell dry aged beef... I think I'll
check out the Whole Foods meat market this summer.

I paid 67 cents per dozen a coupla weeks at Treasure Island here in
Chicago...last week Walgreen's had them for $1.50. Milk I've seen as low as
$2.25 per gallon, this week at Walgreen's it's five bux for two gallons...

Store brand sugar has been $1.99 recently...

I have been doing that with butter and flour lately, and for milk
yesterday.

Albertsons in this area has been having these sales on all three of
those items. Flour has been $1.89/5lbs, so I got several bags. It
is their store brand, and they have unbleached as well as bread flour.
With the cost of flour skyrocketing, I felt it was too good a deal to
pass up.

Same with butter. For a few weeks now, they have had it at
$1.67/pound. I stocked up my freezer.

And this week, they have milk at $1/half gallon. I got a few cartons,
to make some paneer, and to just have on hand. Milk freezes well,
correct?

Oh, I forgot that some of the markets have had them on sale for
$1.25/dozen here.

Milk freezes well and is microwave defrostable...the only concern is that
some of the water seperates. But a quick shake or 3 recombines it well
enough nary a concern. Did it for years as my kids grew up.
