Default Kitchen Appliances and general redo

The term "Great Room" came along in the late '70's. It replaced the
tradional LR,DR,Den with "Great Room" and formal dining room, thus
getting rid of the formal living room. It started as a larger room than
usual, but eventually shrank. So, it really just got rid of the formal
living room to get more usable square footage for your money.

Research carefully the downdraft vents. Many folks are very critical of
them. I have no experience with them.

Thanks Michael,

I think your final product is going to be lovely and I hope you can post
pictures!

I'm trying to find some type of flooring for our kitchen that has a little
bit of "give" to it. We currently have ceramic tile and while it looks nice
and is easy to care for it's hard on my back when I stand for long periods
of time. I don't like the faux hardwood flooring (Pergo) and real hardwood
just isn't practical for a kitchen. Maybe what I'm looking for doesn't
exist at all.

Why? Does it have a fireplace?

Chris, in a previous home we had red oak flooring. It was pre-finished and
epoxy sealed, and was virtually waterproof. Also a nice feel underfoot.

<faint!> But.. but... did you see the PRICE?!?!
Be still my heart!! The microwave itself only has to nuke some leftovers
or a mug of milk once in a while. It doesn't have to dress'em up and
walk'em to the table. OUCH!

Think of it as buying a hood that microwaves?

Yeah, it's pricey. However, with the convection feature, it also functions
as a second oven (if that helps :-)

My largish panasonic microwave/convection ran me well over 600 IIRC...It
is a needed piece of equipment. I use it to cook/steam veggies almost
everyday. Plus the turbo defrost feature is quite handy and doesn't pre
cook the defrosting item...Around the holidays I use it's convection
aspect for the needed extra oven. I rarely melt chocolate as I rarely
bake (maybe 5 or 6 times a year) so I don't use my nuker for that...But
upon occassion I will make quickbreads or muffins in the nuker. I guess I
use it instead of a toaster oven as well for the odd 1 serving casserole.
