Heya folks,
I did it again. And I was just getting ready to back everything up...I even got a new backup hard drive. But not soon enough, it seems. My hard drive, or something caused my laptop to die. So..I lost all recipes. I have been saving tons of them from rfc for years now..and if you have posted recipes in the past year or so...I would love to see them again. I can't even begin to remember which ones I had in my files. I am hoping to retrieve some of these files...but in the meantime... ![]() Christine |

However, there's no way I (and probably many others) can remember all the recipes posted in the past year, either. While I love my computer, this is why I always write down recipes I've acquired, whether I've tried them or just want to try them. Index cards are your friend ![]() Jill |

I'm sure that some will be extraneous data that you will want to delete, but will leave it up to you to cull what you do want from the files. I hope the compressed file is not too large for you to download. I have also e-mailed separately all the recipes that I have in my recipe software, but in text format. It is pretty unlikely, but even if the hard drive physically broke somehow (it would have made lots of noise beforehand) there are ways to retrieve data -- did you know they recovered the hard drive in a field someplace from that space shuttle that burnt up during re-entry and recovered the data on it? Easy to find the freeware on Google or indicate if you are interested and I can give some examples. pflu > |

If it's the power supply, CPU or even the mother board, you may find that the hard drive is still OK, and you may be able to recover the data from it. As somebody else pointed out, even if it is the hard drive, there are 'veys und means' of recovering the data from (some) hard drives these days, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. > So..I lost all recipes. If it helps, when my hard drive died 2 years ago, the Geeks at Best Buy were a lot cheaper than other places to retrieve stuff. They managed to get most of my pictures, files and recipes. It did take quite a few hours. I use MasterCook 7 and I do a backup of recipes and the files I save from Usenet and other places every week onto a separate hard drive. Then every couple of months I burn those files to a CD. I don't know what I'd do if I lost my recipes. Probably Google a margarita recipe and drink a lot. <g> -- Janet Wilder Bad spelling. Handy and cheap (I have rec'd a number of them free) I haven't decided what the perfect back up medium is because I hear CDs won't last forever, the thumb drive can be too small or lost. I used to use online back up services but stopped when I discovered thumb drives. Anything to save a buck, eh? Yet online back up saved me MANY times with financial records. I've stopped using Quicken and just use my banks websites directly. |

These days, I do not have to visit exotic overseas countries as my Countries Enemies are seen wallowing around our seats of government, they guzzle and cavort at the Public trough so deeply they make Caligula and Nero look like Church choir boys." I picked up a thumb drive not that long ago after all kinds of teeth gnashing over what I should use. Put all my pictures (a lot) and the few financial files and other documents I'd be sorry to lose on one little drive. Stuck it in my little fire safe. Don't think I wasn't thrilled to death when I lost my pc last month. I didn't lose anything important to me, and it cost next to nothing. nancy |

Yes, there is that. I don't worry too much about theft, as we have a rather sophisticated security system, in fact, the PC is wired into it. If its destruction by flood or fire, then I have a lot more to worry about that the computer. :-) > I am not so thorough with backups myself but I try to keep > critical data on two different PC's plus a filesystem at my > ISP (which itself does tape backups). I failed to say that I keep my laptop synced with my desktop PC, so in fact I have yet another copy of everything. I sync them at least weekly. My laptop is usually *with* me, whether it be at home or at work. What I don't particularly trust, regardless of their security and privacy claims, is keeping data on an ISP server. > Steve > -- Wayne Boatwright ------------------------------------------- Saturday, 06(VI)/28(XXVIII)/08(MMVIII) ------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------- That which does not kill me had better be able to run away damn fast. ------------------------------------------- |

After using MasterCook since version 2 (1995), Big Oven could not compare. There are plenty of people using Version 9 and even older versions on Vista. I'm on the MastercookDiscussion Yahoo group. Good plan. >What I don't particularly trust, regardless of their security and privacy >claims, is keeping data on an ISP server. I have an ISP I can trust; a small ISP that caters to engineering users and has been around since the dawn of the Internet. I trust that they're doing the tape backups by some reasonable procedure, and could probably retrieve something from tape; in the meantime they have never lost data from their servers, so I figure that's as secure as me archiving it to any device I might have. I don't really worry about privacy or snooping or whatever. Steve |
