1. Simple he was waiting for the recycle value to go from 2 for 5 cents
to 5 cents each.
2. He just doubled his money.

No kidding. I looked at that pile and I was wondering if he got his
security deposit back? Actually, with a can crusher and a few trips
to the recycling place he could have got some money back. I can't
imagine what 8 years of beer cans smells like. Think he had any cats?
Where would the litter box go?

Maybe he rinsed them out before throwing them on a pile.

LOL...Somehow I doubt that. Rinsing the cans is a total pita. We've
got a friend who makes windmill thingies out of cans so we save some
for him. You have to wash them and let them dry upside down and
repack then in the carton they came it. At least they're getting used
and they actually do look pretty cool.

This happened in 2005. The 70,000 cans were redeemed for a grand total
of $800.00.

How funny you would say that as I was just remembering
my cat Scotty, who I'd trained to use the toilet. Funny recollection.

We tried to train Popie to use the toilet, as she seemed the most likely
candidate of our five. However, she fell in the toilet once too many times
and won't go near it now. Funny, though, she loves to take showers with
us.

I was in Houston about 8 years ago and saw that place. Talk about an

Yeah, I guess a sense of security would be important. I
bought some kit that got him accustomed to using the toilet.
He for sure did not understand why I was doing that to him,
but once he caught on, he didn't mind it.

You have to admit it was "interesting" <g>! You must have been in or near
the Houston Heights. If you came now you could actually take a tour, but
probably wouldn't want to...

I was picking up aluminum cans from the community to help fund raise for a
local animal rescuer. The first haul she took to the scrap metal place was
94 pounds and she got about $35 US for it. Hardly made it worthwhile
running around picking up cans, PLUS having to crush them, from those saving
for us. That haul looks like it might bring in $100? At least enough to
replenish some of the brew supply. ;-)

In California all cans & soft drink, & water bottles under 20 ounces are 5
cents each all others are 10 cents each. A case of water from TJ'S has $2.40
that goes to the state for recycling. You can get your money back but you
have to tell the recycle center to COUNT the bottles and cans or they weigh
them and you only get about 1/2 your money back.

LOL! I didn't have that kit, which is why she so easily fell in. Poor

In Houston you need dead reckoning and almost have been to born here to
figure it out.

I was born in Chicago (Evanston actually) and left when I was just 14.
Other than a few trips back as a teenager and then later on business (mostly
saw O'Hare) I really didn't get back until a few years ago.

On my last trip back we stayed on Michigan Avenue in the loop. A friend
drove us around, but after ALL those years I was actually able to direct him
to the apartment building where we lived for my first 14 years. After all
that time I still knew Chicago!

We save our aluminum cans for the Humane Society. DH is a volunteer
there. We save the pull tabs from the cans for a friend who collects
them for some charity in NM. We also bring them paper from the shredder.
They use it in cages.

I recycle newspaper, plastic grocery bags, magazines, computer paper,
plastic bottles and milk jugs and cardboard. I do not recycle steel cans
because it takes too much water to clean them up to recycle them.

I'd recycle glass, but there are no collectors here.

We do but not like that! Around here aluminium cans (and other scrap Al)
bring about 0.35 (varies) a lb and we don't need to crush them. It pays
for a few more tins of cat food

Always amazed at the people who drive up to the recycle truck with the
bed of the pickup filled with numerous black bags of cans.

OH!!! The spice house city!!! Before they had other locations I took
the train up there. Evanston is a beautiful place, but so hard to

That's the north side. The Burnham Harbor area has changed so much I
make Louise drive when we go there. I get lost.

I was a bit more evil than that. But when the kids were young we
spend many weekends on the museum campus. Good times.

I bet they salvaged the cans at work, at a cafeteria, bar, or other
commercial establishment. I'm always amazed at how much soda people
drink at work.

a woman who worked with my dad told him she had taught her cat to use
the toilet. he was unimpressed:

'does the cat flush?'

you might tell your friend that the pull-tab redemption thing is
likely bogus:

<http://www.snopes.com/business/redeem/pulltabs.asp>

there's nothing about pull-tabs that make them any more valuable than
any other scrap aluminum, i.e., not much.

Now you made me waste 15 minutes googling aluminum can crafts. Some
pretty cool stuff made with the cans. The guy I now said he'll show
me how to do it this weekend. He has a tackle box filled with little
parts, tools he made, and templates. I guess he likes doing it.

After seeing the house I'd have to agree.

Could well be. On occasion I've roamed the neighbourhood armed with
plastic bag and cheap plastic gloves. Exercise and
recycling...multitasking.
