Default Jazzing Up Vinegar Bottles

I have some bottles like this one, except mine are clear. They
belonged to Row-behr-to Pastorio. http://tinyurl.com/5rztq9

I want to put herb vinegar in them and enter them in the Fair.
I expect to use a cork stopper.

What can I do to jazz them up? They will be judged solely on their
appearance as a group of five bottles. I'm not good at this stuff.

Labels? Tags? Seal? Fwoofy stuff? Raffia? Metal?
I'm open to suggestions and looking for help.

Thanks.

Sealing wax and a Crest - If you can find an imprint of the herb all the
better.

I'd use Raffia wrapped a couple of times around the neck of the bottle
down where it starts to flare out. Before I made the final tie I'd hot
glue on some of the fresh herb used in the vinegar.

Inside the bottle, flakes of gold leaf.

I'd suggest pearls.

Okay, a medal hanging from the neck might not work because the neck is
pretty long and the hangy-thingy would droop lower to an
indecisive-looking middle. I'm one for a fairly radical asymmetry (in
terms of the distribution of visual emphasis along the vertical axis
in this case -- obviously the bottle is bilaterally symmetrical). You
could emphasize the cork in terms of color and/or texture with sealing
wax maybe.

The use of edible flowers inside the bottles? A real fancy label in more
than 3 colors. Coloured yarn used to accent twisted around and around the
neck just below the sealed cork?

Mmmmm, if I thought the judges would 'get it', I'd consider it.

Man, I gotta practice. . . .
I'm thinking a fresh herb hot glued would be limp by the time I put the
glue gun away, Koko. :-( I like the idea of gluing something to
something else, though. Maybe I'll hit Tuesday Morning to see what they
might have for ideas. Or Michael's.

Thanks, Koko!

Are they clear? The pic makes them look frosted. That would make a
difference

Well, it was a thought.

I've changed my mind. Of course. I played around with your photo --
I put some tarragon in it: http://i35.tinypic.com/dwtf13.jpg

That's my suggestion (minimal) on the right. I tried painting in some
red sealing wax on the neck and it looked crummy. I think it's
because the bottle is designed very intelligently to reflect our sense
of gravity: the weight is greatest at the bottom, which gives it a
sense of stability even though it's tall and curvy. Putting lipstick
on the mouth conflicts with the design's sense of steadiness by
irrationally emphasizing the top. The top is already emphasized
enough by virtue of being a moment of physical termination.

So my new suggestion is to use its sense of stability -- go with the
flow, that is.

Sorry, I compressed too much in what I wrote. The left hand image in
the picture I posted is a variation of bilateral symmetry I made by
cutting the bottle in half and switching sides left to right: the
mirror image looks the same in either the original or my
cut-and-paste. The left half is a mirror of the right half. That's
bilateral symmetry.

But the bottle is not symmetrical top-to-bottom. The top is not a
mirror image of the bottom. That's the axis (up and down) I thought
we should consider when we embellish the design and why a light visual
moment that harmonizes with the wider and visually more massive bottom
seems apt. At first, I had it upside down, so to speak.

By the way, I think it's lovely that you're using Pastorio's bottles
for this competition.

I used to wrap and tie the cork down with raffia and then form a seal using
purple colored wax. I tinted it with sealing wax tablets from the
stationery store.

I tried the link again and it works. And I'm starting to wonder if
trying to do too much fancifying on those bottles would be gilding a
lily. They're pretty cool all by themselves.

Yes, that's sounding good to me, too. I have to dig for some pics I've

ok, your going to say that this is too hard. It's not. Chemical etching.
Really, it's VERY simple.

Any good at painting on glass? That always goes over well at fairs. Have
printed up fancy labels with copyright-free art on them for our own use.
Could do raffia but most people do that...add beads or crystals if
that's not done routinely where you live.

I'm walking a fine line, Arri. I'd like to have something really cool
without going over the top and beads and crystals might be over the top.
:-) I found a couple pics of displays at the Fair and will post them
to my jamlady.eboard.com site in a couple minutes.

I posted a couple pictures from the 2002 Fair -- the lot is for a
display of herbed or flavored vinegars. Now they've split it into two
lots, one for herbed, one for flavored. http://www.jamlady.eboard.com

They look rather plain to my eye. A few with a small tie of raffia on
the neck but otherwise plain.

If you are able to label them with contents only I would make a fancy
label for that purpose, otherwise go with plain like everyone else.

I totally agree. If you can get the herbs in the vinegar to look
beautiful, you've won.

Barb, I paersonally think that less is more. I do like the idea that
someone mentioned, of sealing the cork with rafia and wax. I wouldn't do
too much to the bottles, so as to let the contents speak for themselves.
Herbal vinegars in particular.

Not herb vinegar, *beetroot* vinegar! See, for example,
<https://secure.inforum.at/essigladen/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=84>.

As to jazzin' 'em up, apply some pysanki-like ornaments on the bottles
in a few places - they'll be unique. Also put some greenery, etc. in
the bottles, something like this:

A little red, yellow, or green food coloring will
greatly enhance their visual appeal without affecting
the recipe. It may enhance the sensory evaluation,
if any, through placebo effect. It give the impression
of having a high load of flavoring extractives.

If you insist on all-natural ingrediants, colors
can be extracted from various materials, such as
tumeric (curcumin), spinach (chlorophyll), or the
dreaded beets (betalain). These sources are not
flavor-neutral.

LOL around here beads and crystals would be de rigeur and not the least
bit OTT.
Pics wouldn't download for me but that's not your fault.

Perhaps a little 'rustic' braided cord around the necks a la Chianti
bottles?

OK used a different browser so it downloaded this time. Not a lot to
choose from really. Can you layer herbs, lemon slices, chiles etc in the
bottles like the commercial producers do?
