Goodbye Budweiser!
Depending on the shareholder vote, Anheiser Busch will become the property of !Bev a Belgium company. There goes the neighborhood. I shall not be drinking Bud Light any longer. Andy |

Who > bought out Anheiser-Busch? Some company named InBev. I only interject into this thread because of an amusing coincidence. Since my new pc, whenever I bring open rfc, it brings up older and older posts. I'm back to 08/2004. It's been kind of funny to see what we were talking about then, and see some old faces. At any rate, I opened rfc this morning and the old post it opened was kili and sf talking about coors and whether it's imported and kili said that to her Coors is domestic as Bud. nancy (as always, easily amused by weird coincidences) |

I've always favored micros or beers from smaller non megabreweries. This is my current mainstay. Brewed right here locally and Reinheitsgebot pu http://www.christianmoerlein.com/site.php No rice, no adjuncts, no cheap ingredients. Just water, barley, hops and yeast. Before prohibition we had about 150 locally operated brewries here and if people would fork over a few extra pennies they could be drinking more of the great local fare we could see that number grow again. It would also provide a decent amount of jobs and money. To me Bud is to beer :: as Wonder Bread is to bread. Both are an abomination of the real thing. |

A friend of the family in the air force used to bring me German beer straight from Germany each week. A case (a plastic crate) of pint bottles with the mechanical locking caps. That was good stuff. He never charged me a cent and wouldn't even take my money, just "don't throw the bottles away, there's a deposit for their safe return for refilling." I was OK with that arrangement. ![]() I remember taking the Heineken tour in Amsterdam. The locals considered it ****water. We drank a lot of Grolsch. These days it's hard to tell where beer is brewed. Coors and other brewers use Canadian brewers for some of their brands purely to keep up with demand. Imagine my surprise that Fosters is only brewed in Canada? "Australian for beer?" Yeah, right! Australia has Coopers Ale, my boss forced us to drink while there. Brewed in Adelaide, SA, his home town. I don't know how the Aussies qualify their ale but I could drink that all night with barely a buzz. A lot of drunk bush flies licking the sweat off my shirt! This is really cool news! Now Sqwertz can drink Bud and consider it one of his beloved Belgium beers. As far as I'm concerned, InBev can have Bud. The stuff isn't worth the effort to **** it back out when you're done drinking it. I'm going to stick to my own homebrews and a few select British and Irish ales, thank you very much. |

I don't want to start a ****ing match over beer, no pun intended. But IMO run of the mill American beer is pretty much crap. Most Canadians pride themselves in our beer being better than American beer, but I don't think it is much better. I prefer to buy imported beers and for some reason, most European beers are actually cheaper than Canadian beer. They cost more per can but come in larger cans for they cost less per ounce. Having recently been to Sweden and having tried their beer I would say it is the exception to the superior European beers. I tried two different brands and didn't care for either. > > These days it's hard to tell where beer is brewed. Yeah, right! There are a number of international beers brewed here under licence. I don't know how much if it is actual recipe and genuine ingredients and how much is just a matter of licensing the name. The Carlsburg they made here tasted like some of the other beers from the same brewery and nothing like Danish Carlsburg. > |

Instead of bringing U.S. beer up to European standards, they intend to bring everything else down to U.S. standards! A brilliant marketing plan! I should invest in this company! They know how to make a profit, without regard to sentimentality! |

A search of the web reveals that gen x-y beer drinkers are no longer interested in classic german beers ...a weiss, bock, or kolsch... and sales of great euro beers are down while sales of US-style canoe beers are up all over Europe. I ran across websites as far back as 7-8 yrs ago lamenting the decline of classic German beers from oldtimers and young beer lovers alike. Face it, it's a McDonalds kind of world, these days. Bland cheese, lousy food, watery beer, lowfat milk, flavorless vegetables, high-end vodka (flavorless), etc. I was recently accused of having no tastebuds and needing strong food to detect any flavor. I put it to you that Americans can no longer tolerate rich, flavorful foods and demand bland insipid food or they about have a stroke. Even ethnic foods that American claim to love are so dumbed down by native cooks as to hold little resemblence to the real thing. Most Americans would gag on real Chinese food. It's no accident US beers are "close to water". It started after prohibition as an attempt to get more women to like beer. Make it less hoppy, less bitter. Make it more smooth, not so strong. You know why Americans drink cold beer? One is the style, a German style pilsner or lager, and two, the ice cold serving temps kill what little flavor is left. It's worked all too well and Americans have been drinking what amounts to melted yellow snow for half a century. No, I have plenty of tastebuds and I damn well want every single one of them to know what their job is and to do it! Give me a beer with clout. A beer I can chew and will chew my ass back. ![]() nb |
