Well, I certainly learned a lot! I had no idea there were so many BBQ
sauce variations - mayonnaise BBQ sauce? And Florida is *not* a
Southern state? Since when?

sf
in *Northern* California where BBQ is still a verb

Many Southerners living in *other* Southern states do not consider Florida
part of "The South".

I never heard Floridians talk with a Southern drawl. Maybe that's why it's
not considered "Southern!"

I lived there for one year, too long!

That's because it became a retirement home for old Yankees.

So, being a Southerner is like being in a club where your membership
can be revoked on a whim? Didn't know that either. I'm liking being
a born & bred Yankee more and more.

It is next to impossible to "become" a Southerner by simply moving to the
South. I have known non-natives who've lived there for many years that are
still considered "yankees" or even "damned yankees".

Even thought my entire family, including my parents, were born and raised
in the South, I was actually born in California and only lived in the South
as an infant before our family moved away. I was never considered quite
Southern. :-)

Nor really.

Being a Southerner is for all intents and purposed a state of mind or
attitude which is nurtured from birth. Florida is the Indian revenge on the
white man for stealing Manhattan Island. They are selling uninhabitable
insect infested swamp to unsuspecting northerners. There are too many
transplants from the north for a proper Southern attitude to prevail.

The smart southerners sold swamp land to Yankees and then moved far away.

My wife has lived down here longer than she lived in Maryland and she is
still known as "that Yankee woman that's married to the Texan."

A wedding announcement was put in the local paper in my home town.
"Maryland woman weds local Texan."

My 3rd favorite song of all time:

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Band/_/Georgia+on+My+Mind

2nd: Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, Otis Redding

#1 Song: The Weight, The Band

with a few constant mixups in between.

I'm an old codger myself but the guy who had the bad attitude was 20
years older than me. If I had hit him, which he deserved, I would have
had to serve time for "elder abuse." No thanks, just walked out of the
store he was "working" in.

I don't think "transplants" consider themselves southern. I was
talking about the state (and native residents).

I think most Florida natives consider themselves more as "Floridians" than
"Southerners". There does seem to be distinction between states.

I'm a transplanted "genuine" southerner from Tennessee, now living in
Floriduh and I can garrontee you that this *IS NOT* a southern state.

North Florida may be the exception, but the rest of the state is populated
by yankees. If you meet someone who is from here, write it down. It most
likely won't happen again.

I've met about 5 in as many years here.

That ain't Florida. Alabama didn't want it, so we let 'em call it Florida.

TFM®,

Only thing Florida does right is old folks "Early Bird Specials," Not us,
surfing the Miami beach bunnies!!!

Gimme sand, I've got life!!!

May I ask, is the 100-slice bologna sandwich a Florida favorite?!? Or is
that only a household thing?!?

of course they don't. people in florida are sho 'nuff crazy, not just
eccentric.. (kili company excepted.) plus there are all these brown
people there, not just black and white, which confuses the hell out of
things.

You don't like New England Boiled dinners (gasp).... Maine lobster,
Boston baked beans, chowder of every kind, etc. etc. etc? Better
Yankee style than drowned in fat and bacon grease.

People think of Florida as Disney, beaches, bikini's, and ocean front
hotels. If you go to central Florida you'll find a different type
lifestyle and just as strong a drawl as any other southern state. The
guys I've seen that liked to get all drunk and go out on lake
Kissimmee late at night to shoot crocodiles always had such a thick
accent I could hardly understand them. Or maybe is was just too much
cheap beer.

You explained that so well. My husband is from New York; his childhood
and mine, were different. He is a quick study, so he is learning how to
fit in, here in Louisiana, and he is doing well. I am proud of him.

He is cooking stir-fry tonight, beef & broccoli.
