Pop-Tart and coffee. It's national "Ride to Work" day so it was out on the
motorcycle for an early start of a group ride to work. We turned a 45minute
ride into a 2 hour sunrise cruise along the Ohio river. Well worth the
early rise.

The preserves aren't sour, Andy. The cherries are the same type used in
cherry pie. In both cases they are sweetened. IOW, sour cherries as
opposed to bing cherries and other "sweet cherries".

Never tasted cherries 'cept the sweetened maraschino kind as a kid. I think
that's what caused my dislike of cherries.

I'm amazed that you've never eaten a piece of cherry pie! You might try
eating some sweet bing cherries (those are the very dark almost black
cherries) fresh, out of hand. They are quite sweet and delicious.
Maraschino cherries are highly processed with chemicals to give them the
texture, color, and flavor that are distinct to them. While they're still
cherries, of course, they bear little resemblance to any other form of
cherry.

Is it just me, or are commercial jams and jellies getting sweeter? I
can't take commercial marmalade either, even when made with Seville
oranges (too sweet). Raspberry jam used to be my favorite, but I just
couldn't take it anymore. It seems like every jar gets sweeter. I've
switched to blackberry jam which is slightly tarter than raspberry.
It's a start. I want to taste what it's made with not the sugar.

dietary intake to have such treats on occasion.

England, Scotland, or Germany.

You'll eventually learn what and how much your system can tolerate. My
doctor has also taught me how to adjust my meds accordingly, if ncecessary.

Sugar and other carbs are not necessarily forbidden foods for a diabetic,
but they must be closely monitored and balanced with other foods and
medications.

Oh c'mon! I was the "bread & butter kid." I hardly ate ANYTHING until I was
in my late teens.

Now (except gout and diabetes restrictions) I'll eat anything except lima
beans, but you knew that, right?

My DH has gout as well.
Morning Star farms is the only brand I'll buy. I have bought several brands
and always like MSF better. I only like the patties, I don't like the links
at all. You can nuke them but they are better made on the stove top. If you
have a little Trader Joes Red Pepper Spread ... that makes for a very good
breakfast or a before bed snack.

Woolstitcher,

I wouldn't mind a red pepper spread (I have TJs!). Their tapanade on
crispbread makes a decent breakfast too!

Do they carry the MSF veggie sausage too? Or do I have to try my luck and
shop around? NOT that I mind [constant flirt].

To tell the truth I did not know the restrictions.

Fresh cherries are nothing like Maraschino Cherries. Maraschino cherries
are flavored heavily with almond which is where they get their distinctive
bitterness.

No limas?

The next time you get to downtown LA check with the Original Pantry (maybe
call first). Since they butcher their own Hams for their ham & Eggs they
have a lot of left over ham hocks. Every so often they have Ham hocks &
lima beans. I guarantee if you have some it will change you mind.

In addition they sometimes rake the left over end pieces of the roast beef
and make roast beef hash. It's to die for.

My local TJ's carries both Morningstar Farms and TJ's branded
breakfast sausage. I believe the MSF has egg product in it
whereas the TJ's is vegan.

Tangentially, in my quest for gout-friendly foods I'm actually
avoiding a lot of soy and legume products I normally would eat.
They are however a generally better choice than meat or fish products.

The smoky paprika is divine. I sometimes combine it with
zatar--WITH the sumac. It really makes the eggs taste totally
different.
