Best I've had, by far, were oyster and corn fritters. Batter used
beer and beaten egg whites. Really flavorful, light as they could
be. -aem

I only fairly recently - last winter, I guess - noticed that Robert
Newton, the best-known Long John Silver because of his TV and movie roles,
did draw out terminal "ar" sounds (and maybe internal ones; I don't
remember) in words. I was used to the interjection, "arrr". But not until
my buddy and I watched some of his old stuff on a DVDs we rented did I
notice the habit with respect to worrrds. He'd definitely say
"calandarrr.'

From Newton's wiki entry: "His Disney portrayal provided the template for
most screen portrayals of pirates since and he often credited for
inventing the steryotypical 'pirate voice'; Newton has even become the
"patron saint" of the annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day
(September 19)."

That's good to know. I love corn fritters. My mom used
to make them for us when I was a kid. But they were more
like pancakes with corn in them than what I now think of
as a fritter. We put syrup on them.

I just had Indonesian Corn and Shrimp fritters for lunch
the other day. They were awesome. Now I'm craving more!
Damn you!

Oh, no! You've got to knock it off, Bob! Now I'm jonesing
for homemade peach ice cream and I don't have the energy to
make it even if I had kept the freezing container in the
freezer like I'm supposed to so I can make ice cream at a
moment's notice and not have to wait a week for the damn
thing to chill.

Funny you should mention that. One of the guys who
started "Talk Like a Pirate Day" was on Jeopardy last
week.

Okay. Lets hope I have it in my files.... Nope. I'll type it
up. I've had this for a LONG time. God only knows where it came
from. That also explains the use of powdered laos....

Djagung Rempeyek

16 oz can whole kernel corn, well drained (I'd be tempted to use
fresh)
1 small onion, finely chopped
1/4 c finely chopped cooked shrimp
1/4 c flour
1 tsp laos powder (galangal...)
1 tsp coriander
1 tsp dill weed
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sambal oelek
1/4 tsp cumin
2 eggs, beaten
oil

Combine the onion, corn, garlic and shrimp; mix in the flour and
the seasonings. Then mix in the eggs.

Fry in about 1/4 inch of hot oil until browned on each side.

Drain on paper toweling and serve.

This sounds weird, but I have cooked it and enjoyed it many times.
You might want to use your judgment on the salt though, because
some of my older recipes now strike me as being salty.

Thanks, I do have a recipe for them. I haven't made
them in a long time though. The ones I had this week
were from a local restaurant. We had a lunch meeting
and I orderd Southeast Asian food which included Burmese,
Thai, Indonesian, and other foods. I usually get the
leftovers take home but there was only one corn fritter
left overs. Bummer.

Too bad. Sadder yet--I am back to LC eating, so no corn fritters
of any sort for me. AND my restaurant choices are quite limited.

Heh. Well, LF flour is a possibility. I don't think anyone has
developed LC corn (nor is anyone about to). Oh! I can see it
now. Little corn-flavored blobs of... Of what?

Isn't that called Crisco vegetable shortening when you don't close the lid?
Or in canned biscuits? Thanks for that image.
