You probably should eat scallops in Eqypt, either. :-)

Glad you're feeling better!

Ya eat CATFISH in Arkansaw, Rosie, it's the state fish or something down
there...

What are some Arkansaw specialities? I'd guess just typical Southron
food...???

Maybe extend this to never eat seafood in a chain hotel
restaurant.

Are you sure it was the scallops? Perhaps the culprit could've been
something else you ate that accompanied the scallop entree, perhaps it
was an ingredient in the salad, if you had one? Aren't scallops (and
other shellfish?) an unusual vector for Salmonella and/or E. coli?

How do you know it was the scallops at that restaurant? And how do you
know it was salmonella for that matter?).

Most of the confirmed reports of salmonella are coming from dairy and
vegetable products lately, not seafood. And it's impossible for the
average consumer to pinpoint it to one single item eaten in the course
of the last 12-48 hours unless they still have a sample of the food and
have it tested at a lab.

except for the scallops.

But by now , am back in the world of the living, and feel fine.

I stopped eating any fresh seafood since I left Lung Guyland five
years ago. I know there're no guarantees but I scoffed down tons of
fresh caught Lung Guyland seafood, including shell fish, and
especially boatloads of raw clams/oysters, for most of my life and not
once did I become ill from seafood. The first month I lived in
upstate NY I went to a popular local eatery and ordered the highly
touted fish and chips special... the presentation was spectacular and
it tasted superb... woke up just before sun up and made it all the way
to the toilet without remembering my feet touching the floor, and
there I remained most of that day. I have no idea what kind of fish
but it was two large flakely white fleshed fillets deep fried in
nicely seasoned crispy light batter, arched over a mountain of jumbo
skin on fries. It looked so good and tasted so wonderful I ate every
bit... spoiled fish never once occurred to me, was I wrong.

And yes, salmonella has become quite common in shellfish.

This sounds like a corollary to the motto I taught my students during
the food safety unit of intro nutrition: avoid eating sashimi in
Nebraska.

Still some truth to that, but with air shipments, seafood can still be less
than 24 hours from ocean to table. What you don't know, is how long the
store or restaurant may have held it because it did not sell yesterday, or
the day before, or the day before that. It may have been on the boat for a
week before that too.
