Default Serious question re 60 and 70's stuff

Hi all

Being a 'newbie" here and not aware of everyones, locations, ages.
preferences...

I was a thinking... being a product of the 60 and 70's myself
(I've always been a 'community' type person and an willing to help
anyone and in any way in my area...)
has anyone suggested, due to our/usenet food interests, possible
ages of some -I wave to this - close to retirement myself and also
because of the economy... a food lovers community?

Call me old fashion, love of people, same interests...
what about a group... to buy some land and communal living?

Experiment, cook, eat... enjoy life... help one another?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT. <;o-)

Anyone have a few (!!) acres to buy into?

Google is your friend.

My copy is from 1973 and has no pictures and the cover is like a brown
kraft paper with a line drawing.

Ommmmmm.

Tassajara is/was a Zen center near Carmel. Tassajara was also the
name of a well known bread bakery (now defunct) here in San Fransicso.

Right now, it's evacuated due to the fires.

And we could call it "Foody Acres", right? :-)

It's just me, but the very thought of "communal living" for any purpose
would drive me right over the edge.

I've read a bit about intentional communities and they seem to be for people
with a lot of money.

I'd rather die alone in a pile of my own shit than live communally.

I'm about 15 years away from retirement, but I probably won't have
enough saved to do so.

Didn't that already get tried in the 60's-70's when our hair was darker
and our backs didn't hurt the minute we picked up a hoe?

Gardening is rewarding but it's also DAMNED hard work, not for the
becoming-feeble.

Like the others, I hate the idea of communal living, especially communal
concensus decision making on how to spend money.

But if the idea is to get together with people who share my food tastes
and to help one another, you can do that in any regular neighborhood.

Do a neighbor a favor. Mow their lawn. Snowblow their driveway. Bring
over home grown tomatoes. Share a batch of cookies. Coach a T-ball
team. Drive them to the supermarket or the doctor's office. Make
lemonade and ask for company on your front porch. You'll quickly
discover whom you like to spend time with and whom you don't.

Have something you hate to do? Ask for help planting your rose bushes.
Bring them raspberries in exchange for jam. Tell them you need help
getting things down from the high shelf. You'll quickly learn who's
willing to help a neighbor and who won't.

Organize a potluck dinner club. Find out who likes to cook as you do,
and invite them over with specific assignments on what each person
should bring. Have the first one at your house. Then be forward as you
ask who would like to host the next one. Weed out the freeloaders.
This can work.

Me, too. Ick.

Howcome everyone who wasn't an adult in the 60s and 70s wants to
reconstruct it? Folks, it wasn't that great. "Earth colors," "earth
shoes?" No thanks.

I loved the 50s, but wouldn't want to go back there, either.

Not as easily as you suggest. In my limited experience I've seen two
kinds of potlucks. Most common by a good measure is when everyone
brings already cooked dishes that may or may not get (re-)heated. The
other type adds the ability for some to use the host's kitchen to cook
something (usually something that cooks fast). The first type is
clearly much easier for the host but I don't like the results much.
You mostly get casseroles and crockpot stuff, not my favorite things
to cook or to eat. To make the second type successful the host
kitchen has to be adaptable for multiple users and the host ends up
with more clean-up work. So while I've always liked the concept of
potlucks, the successful executions have been rare. -aem

Why did you reply to *my* post and then snip what I wrote? Do you knock

I was thinking it has the makings of a Miss Marple murder mystery.

We did kid around about the rfc retirement home, that was some
time ago. Warms your cockles, thinking of us hanging around in
rocking chairs, cradling our laptops, bitching at each other.

Yeah, nowadays. Guess it's the new yuppie (or whom ever) thing to
do now.

In a few years we won't even need laptops. We'll be tapping out
messages with our canes on floor tile keyboards. Or maybe on our teeth
with a tiny silver fork.

Good idea! We'll need larger print by that time.

Speaking of large print. I use Big Oven and used to keep my laptop with
larger fonts. Had to reduce them because in Big Oven some of the
programming won't work with the larger font. Bummer.

Look into the concept of "co-housing."

Niece Jo and I have laughed about living together in our dotage. I told
Beck about it and she laughed and said she wanted in, too. "You can
cook, Jo can pay, and I'll clean. Perfect." LOL!

So NJ tells her younger daughter about it and Katie (in training to be a
nurse at the time) said, "High staff turnover. Definitely, high staff
turnover."
