Okay, you guys are going to have finally make that long-awaited
appointment with your assorted opticians <g>, plus I've aged another
20 years since we left on The Trip with our 14 year old granddaughter
last Friday (was it ONLY last Friday???). More on The Trip prior to
this auspicious natal day to follow.

Meanwhile, as to today's festivities, we dead-headed from Bisbee AZ to
Carlsbad NM, so spent the entire day in a car with a GPS named
"Maggie," who decided the non-scenic, far longer route would be just
the thing to memorialize my natal anniversary. Driving 300 miles
through the desert with no cell reception, a dead IPod and a sullen
teenager was such a treat! Finally got to Carlsbad (word to one and
all: the Holiday Inn Express on Pierce is a comfy, spacious hotel with
most amenities - pool, hot tub, tiny workout room, laundry, hot
"breakfast," friendly staff, clean as a whistle, flat screen TVs, and
all the trimmings - which is about as high end a hotel as Carlsbad
boasts) and The Kid announces that she has a sore throat. Stay tuned
to this channel as The Kid tries to figure out some way - any way - to
find herself back in Orange County ASAP.

And my birthday dinner was at Chili's, which is one of the few
"restaurants" in town that has a bar. After 2 mondo-President
margaritas, The Kid's life expectancy improved. The DH so owes me!

That was what I left out of my Denver report. I went to the
Chilis on 16th in upper lower downtown. Nothing spectacular,
but their black bean burger is always reasonable.

No malt vinegar for the otherwise decent fries though.

Yeah, Chili's is "that chain restaurant," but Carlsbad is a little
light on restaurants that serve alcohol <g> As to weather, the
farthest south we're going is Austin, although we had planned to take
a side jaunt to San Antonio to show The Kid the Alamo, but we'll
see...

I would rather stick pins in my eyes than do yard work of any
description. Now that I'm officially a "senior," I have decided to
take on a Princess Persona, dammit.

No particular reason to go to Chilis, other than the black bean
burger, and then only if you're in some sort of wasteland with
a deficit of vegetarian food.

Some individual Chili's will have decent bars/bartenders.

No real reason to. Their Black Bean Burger is sufficient such that
if faced with several equally bad choices (Friday's, Tuesday's,
Chili's) I'll vote for Chili's. It's well known among desperate
vegetarians, sort of like Subway's Veggie Delite sub.

Given those choices, I'd take Ruby Tuesday's.

Decades ago I used to love going to Friday's first restaurant at First
Avenue and 63rd Street in Manhattan. It was really pretty good then.

Sadly, we have now eaten at a Chili's three times: the original
occasion back in Carlsbad (urgent need for alcohol and noplace else
served same), then twice too pooped to get in the car and drive
anywhere and there was a Chili's within yards of the hotel.

The only thing I liked was the nachos...and the El Presidente
margaritas!
