A loaf of five-minute-artisan-bread, some butter, and bowls of this soup
that I just made up: Sautee a chopped onion in a couple tablespoons of bacon fat until they're translucent. Add a cup of chana dal and a cup of lentils. Add two quarts of water, bring to a boil, and simmer for about an hour, until the beans are tender. Add six strips of bacon, cooked and chopped, a teaspoon of Costco Organic No-Salt Seasoning (or any poultry-seasoning-ish thing you have around), and seasoned salt to taste. Simmer another 15-30 minutes and serve, adding water if it gets too thick. The teenager says this soup is better than her previous favorite, which was canned Andersen's Split Pea with Bacon. I may add a little garlic, just 'cause. I forgot. About a teaspoon of granulated garlic. Thanks! Serene -- "I think I have an umami receptor that has developed sentience." -- Stef |
