i'm not one for reparations, but you have to bear in mind that blacks
have a disadvantage when it comes to building family wealth, a great
deal of which is owning a home. they are definitely playing catch-up
there for a variety of reasons.

An excellent point.

One reason for many social problems is that their strongly matriarchal
culture must be somehow stuffed into our European patriarchal culture in
order for assimilation to work. It's such a fundamental difference, it just
is not happening.

That's reasonable. As for those who have no grounds for complaint but
complain anyway, when you are president, can you see about outlawing free
speech for the stupid?

Probably true. My experience with addiction was my 25-year smoking habit
(age 15-40) and it was humbling. It had almost gotten to the point where I
chose the friends and family members I spent time on based upon whether they
were comfortable with me smoking. Ugh. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED my
cigarettes and still miss them at times, but that was just too much. I've
never allowed a human being to control me and I'm going to let a thing
control me? MM mm. Had my addiction been to an illegal substance, I can just
imagine the problems I might have now.

My wife works at a state psych hospital the "cares" for people who have
done the worst and most violent things imaginable. The state passed a
law that would require the patients to give up smoking. I thought that
the switchover might have some bad outcomes given that it's one of their
few allowed indulgences but everything went smoothly. It seems that in a
controlled environment, it's not too difficult to give up certain
addictions and reach 100% compliance.

I could have used incarceration last January when I quit. It might still be
a good idea. Seems cruel to lock them up and take their smokes away,
though.

So cybercat did you go into a residential rehab or did you quit on
your own. Or did they give you a list of S.A. (smokers Anon.) and wish
you good luck.

Yeah, that's the thing. They literally couldn't GET smokes. The test is
quitting when you can get them. And it probably helped that the doctors
could adjust their medicines, too, to addres some of the withdrawal
symptoms.

No the lazy should not be left to die. Hunger would be an incentive to
get a job.
But if she chooses to die, that is her choice, just as anyone who
committed suicide.

Orlando You are just giving excuses for these woman. Both would be
able to walk to a local fast food joint. It would provide them with a
job, (teens will be going back to school soon, opening up jobs) and a
way to lose weight. So between two eight dollar an hour, and the
husband/father's income they would fare better.
And no they are not expected to lay down and die, They are expected to
stand up, work, and live.

So when the American Indians sold Manhattan island to the white folks,
they were ripping of the Honkies?
The land had no value, was worthless, and the white man nor anyone

So the white man shouldn't be ****ed?

I quit using outrageously expensive nicotine patches that the poor cannot
afford. In addition, for the two months I was on these things, I allowed
myself to have literally ANYTHING I wanted except a cigarette. Chocolate,
expensive seafood, collectibles, trips, etc.

Had I been hungry and dirty and constantly anxious about survival I have no
doubt I would still be smoking. You smug, compassionless prick you.

I thought so too. Although the state did supply them with
give-up-smoking patches.

OTOH, considering their situation, any problems brought on by smoking
would seem to be minor next to mental illness.

Except they are on top of the mental illness. I was crazed for a part of
the quitting time. I wanted to throw people under a bus or spit in their
eye. If I were a homicidal maniac, I would have done it. I think I would
have set fire to a nurse, probably. One that smelled of smoke from her
break ciggie.

nah. i'm pretty much a free speech absolutist. that we have such a
right specifically enumerated is a fairly rare thing.

the bush administration has a long history of suppressing or 'editing'
information unfavorable to it. you'd know this if you were paying
attention at all. find me some other source saying homelessness is

my favorite part of that story is that the canarsee indians really had
no plausible claims to ownership of manhattan in the first place:

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_156.html

so that might be the one time they got over on the white man. but
he's been repaying the indians for this swindle at his leisure.

Uh, YOU challenged what _I_ posted, Lazy Boi, so it's up to *you* to find
some other source...so have at it.

I apologise, blake...I forgot that you are leftist and so hate ANY good news
that comes down the pike, e.g. a reduction in homelessness or that life is
improving for some folx or even that some peeps are doing pretty well...what
yer REALLY saying is that you'd LOVE to see the streets crawling with
millions more homeless as that would prove how truly evil the "Bush regime"
is. Then you'd be **** - pot happy...

Mebbe you need to get help for your "schadenfreude complex", blake...and
also the problem with cartoon fascistic liberals such as yourself is that
while you "love" mankind, you *hate* people.

I guess your idear of true bliss would have been 50% unemployment and a
severe depression and even the destruction of the US during the this Shrub
presidency. But it DIDN'T happen - doesn't that just **** you off...???

Heehee...

:-)

It's probably a mixed bag with whether or not they're on top of the
mental illness. I will place you under the "went insane from quiting
smoking" column. My guess is that while they reached 100% compliance
from the patients, the staff's smoking habits would be relatively
unchanged. It don't seem right, do it?

Numerous people (me included) went cold turkey, yes it is hard, and I
gained weight, but it can be done.

If I was hungry, (which I have been in the past)I would not spend
money on smokes or drinks.

And am I compassionless when I expect those who can, to do for
themselves. Those who can't help themselves get my help.

Am I smug because, I pulled my self up? If I can do it, anyone can.

As for being a prick, It is the best part of a man.

Essentially, it was the Europeans' mistake that if people lived somewhere,
they automatically had a concept of ownership. Can't blame the Indians.
They probably didn't understand and futhermore the Europeans most likely
embellished the story, making it seem like they had made a great deal,
whereas the natives were in fact merely nodding politely and taking what
was being offered simply because it was being handed to them. If they had
no concept of ownership (generally accepted as a fundamental reality of
North American natives), they cannot have valued, negotiated a sale or even
conceived of a trickery.

There is a story. A priest is living among the Hurons in the Georgian Bay
area and he approaches the chief one day.

He says: I want to go to the next village and I may be gone a month or so.
Can I leave my stuff in the longhouse?

The chief says: Sure, no problem.

The priest, somewhat uncertain, asks: So, you're sure it'll all be safe?
Nobody will steal it?

The chief: Don't worry. There isn't another white man for a hundred miles
around.

Men who believe that frequently don't get as much out of life as they
thought they would.
