Default San Antonio for a day

Damn I love my job! I love going to conferences and I just had one plop
into my lap unexpectedly. I've been asked to go to San Antonio for one
day, with my r/t airfare and hotel arranged and paid for by the
organizer. I'll be at the Hotel Valencia on the Riverwalk. Anyone know
of special restaurants not to miss, if I get a chance? It has been AGES
(decades!) since I've seen San Antonio... I'm psyched~

I was last there in (I think) November 2004 and posted a
review of restaurants (and one museum) on ba.food at the
time. It should be googlable.

If you can get a car, Lulu's Bakery & Cafe on Main Street has the
world's best chicken fried steak. We are stopping there for some on our
way home next week. They also make a cinnamon roll as big as a loaf of
bread.

Most of the River Walk restaurants are good, but over-priced and
sometimes the service can be a trial.

If you have some free time, walk up to the Institute of Texan Cultures.
It's the most wonderful museum in the whole town. Much more interesting
than the Alamo.

It's been a few years for me too, but Pico de Gallo is a few blocks
west of the Mercado - walk under I-35 to get to it - off Buena Vista I
think. The same family owns another restaurant on the south side of
the Mercado - can't remember the name now, but the roast goat was
really good - entrance is on Dolorosa

- Mark.

I am off to a mining conference, leaving 3rd August and returning 7th.
Calling it a conference is really just so we all don't feel as naughty
at boozing our way through 3 days. It is called Diggers and Dealers
and is held in a mining town called Kalgoorlie. All the big (and
small) players in mining, mining finance and stock broking fly in for
three days of playing and networking. Over the years it has spawned
some wicked scandals and big reputations for one thing or another.

Lucky you! SA used to be a favorite weekend destination for us when we lived
in TX. Such a unique city.

Some places I've enjoyed are Boudros (http://www.boudros.com/boudros/),
Schilo's Deli, and the Fig Tree (http://www.figtreerestaurant.com/ -- had a
wonderful, very memorable anniversary dinner there once).

Also, although I've never been there, DH had an excellent dinner at
Restaurant Le Reve: http://www.restaurantlereve.com/.

Have fun!

Mary

Listening to the weather channel, SA seems to be having a lot of
flooding from the remnants of Dolly. The River Walk restaurants might
not be in operation.
