Heh. I knew exactly what you meant. The way some folks 'dress up' to go to
the supermarket you'd think they were on their way to a Ball or
something...

Cathy,

It's supermarket theatre of jewels at some of them!!!

I may have shopped naked, but I know I had shoes on! In my dream.

Best,

I *never* "dress up" go to to the supermarket and, unfortunately, I still
look better than most of the people there. Maybe I should start shopping
in Scottsdale or Paradise Valley. In those areas, no matter how "dressed
down" they are, they still look chic.

It's Italy. It may not be formal, but it IS stylish whether the supermarket
or the drugstore. No one can change that.

I have no clue about the areas you're referring to, but I would hazard a
guess that they're very 'up-market'? If so, in the Jo'burg area Sandton
would be similar.

Never. Never have. Never will.

Unless you call changing out of my pajamas
into regular clothes dressing up. ;-)

Can't imagine why anyone would. I don't
exactly go with curlers in my hair but that's only
because I don't use curlers anymore. Used to though.

Since I don't sit around in my underwear, I wear exactly the same things
to go shopping. I was surprised that "sometimes" beat "never"!

Heh. I have seen some women shopping around here with their hair in curlers,
but not for a few decades. I drew the line at curlers (I don't use them
anymore). However, these days, as long as I have on my normal clean
clothing and a pair of shoes that don't have any chicken poo attached to
their soles, I'm happy ;-)

It is guaranteed that if I don't make myself look presentable, I'll run
into everyone and their uncle who I'd rather not see me looking shabby
and I'll feel uncomfortable. I'd rather make the small effort to put
myself together and I feel in return I also get a better response from
others.

When I was newlywed, even going to the military commissary was an event
as I would wear a dress for work that day and go shopping from there.
Jeans or althletic wear were not allowed in at that time, and for men,
no tee shirts unless they had a pocket. Nowadays anything goes, but then
they had set minimum standards. I also was married at a youngish age to
an older man well established in military and might run into some of his
soldiers and families so wanted to look appropriate.

That's only because they're e wearing $200.00 shorts and $300.00 sandals
with a $400.00 Golf shirt.

The question wasn't whether you made yourself look 'presentable' it was
whether you dressed up in your 'best'. Nothing wrong with presentable, of
course...

LOL. Sounds like "Durbs [1]" here. Everybody dresses "casually". If somebody
puts on a pair of long pants or <gasp> a tie, the first question they get
is, "Hey, are you going for a job interview?"

Reminds me of the newspaper clipping I saw posted somewhere.
Article was about opening of a new "Dollar Store" in some backwoods-ish
place like West Virgina.
One interviewee said she liked it, "'cause you don't have to get all
dressed up, like you were going to the Wal-Mart"

Pretty scary, considering what *I* see at WallyWorld!

But... but... the legs?!? Think of the legs!!! They can ruin a whole $200
pair of shorts. ALL DAY!!!

You're going overboad on the sandals and golf shirt.

Andy
Doesn't wear shorts. Too many years sleeping on the beach.

Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh!

I don't smoke. But we did barefoot with beers into town (glass was a fine)
for the minuscule necessities and shoplift what we could... what THEY
could!!!

I helped deliver pizzas in my youth. A lifetime, TO THIS DAY, supply of
dead pizza (we'd carry home every night)!!! Saved our lives. Beach BUMS!!!
as we were.

You think delivering pizzas to the Navy in San Diego on submarines is
sexy??

Maybe in my next lifetime!

And whining about the increase in food prices.

Back in my "Mad Men" days we joked about going to Bonwit Teller to buy
something to shop at Bergdorf's in.

Heh. Reminds me of a thread that Damsel started several years ago -
something about being a 'food snob'?

FWIW, I think I'm a food snob, but not a clothes snob. I'll travel miles out
of my way to buy good food, but not for clothing...

It doesn't surprise me. I'm more of a slob around the house than
I am in public. Doesn't mean I dress up. Just my tshirt isn't the
same one I just sweated up while weeding the flower beds. And it
doesn't clash with my shorts. What can I say.

If you don't wear shorts here in the summer, you melt!

Heh, so what do you say about wearing flip flops to the
supermarket? Are those bare feet hanging out icky to the
other shoppers?

I'm more comfortable not going into public looking greasy, with bed head
hair and sans brushed teeth. All I need to put on to feel presentable is
perhaps a touch of eyeliner. I don't think it is too much to bother with?

Wayne,

I'd be perfectly at home anywhere in 114°F or in a jungle in slacks and
long-sleeves! How fast can you sunburn is the question!

You got desert in AZ!!! I know how it feels! Cover your skin with Ex-
Officio (built in sunscreen) shirts and Northface slacks and you'll stay
cool.

In several colors.

Most folks don't know how to stay cool!!!

Best,

Andy

You're right about protection in the sun. I spend as little time in it as
possible.

I see it all the time in most of the Phoenix area. If you see them in
areas like Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, you can bet the styles they
bought are top dollar versions.
