I subbed at a local high school in a "behaviorally disordered" class room. The teacher's notes said that during a specific period I would have only 4 students and that I should try to keep myself between a certain boy and the door in case he were to try to make a break for freedom. When that period rolled around I was greeted by 4 young men, 18 and 19 year-olds. The gentleman who'd been the subject of the note was probably about 6'2" and outweighed me by around 80 pounds. You'd better believe I didn't let that kid get between me and the door, but not because I was afraid *he* was going to run off. |

Incredibly rude, almost hostile waitress. I could not imagine what her problem was but she copped a huge attitude, gave lousy service, threw food on the table and stalked off and when I complained to the manager, a 20 something kid with greasy hair and pimples, I was basically told I could go someplace else if I didn't like it and I was stuck with her for a waitress. And the waitress gave herself a nice tip, too. Just added it to the CC. The CC company refunded it but they could not have cared less about the abuse of the card. I avoide chain places when at all possible. Paul |

What a scary experience! I avoid eating out altogether. Most restaurant kitchens are a daily friggin' nightmare of health concerns. Been there, seen it. That's why I learned to cook! Best, Andy |

Kathleen, You know how to drop an attacking 500 lb. monster in an instant? Without firearms? Kick his approaching kneecap backwards as hard as possible and wind-up slap his ear as hard as hell. Say goodnight! Andy |

Nice enough place as I remember. There's a Bennigans near my parents house. They rarely eat there and its been at least three or four years since the last time I ate there. They model themselves like an Irish Pub, but I can think of lots of locally owned Irish pubs in my area where I can eat for a reasonable price that have great food, and some even have live music, so I rarely had a reason to eat at Bennigans. Same sort of story for Steak & Ale. |

I think its silly to lump all chain restaurants together. Sure, there are a lot of bad chain restaurants, but there are a lot of good ones too. Someone else (goomba, I believe) was extolling the virtues of PF Chang's in another thread). I tend to avoid chain restaurants because I have lots of locally owned places that I like, but I can think of some chains that are pretty good. For example, for Italian food, the only chain restaurant I enjoy is Carraba's. They have an open kitchen and you can sit at the bar and watch the chefs prepare the food. The food is pretty good and watching the food being prepared is entertaining. Their prices are reasonable and I have never had anything less then first rate service there. Another chain that I like is Texas Roadhouse. For a reasonable amount of money, you get great service, good food, and a nice atmosphere. |

Same sort of story for Steak & Ale. Stan, Mornin! I never heard of Steak & Ale until yesterday's news. BTW, there's a true and great Irish pub (the name escapes me) on 21st and Walnut just on the corner of Rittenhouse Square. I was impressed with the kind offer to join the IRA. I had a Guiness instead. Still thinking it over, 10 years later. ![]() Best, Andy |

Every once in a while during final or mid-term exams, a bomb threat is reported for one of the classroom buildings. Gee! I wonder why that happens! When I was a student, We had to evacuate class twice during exams due to bomb threats, and that was something like 20 years ago. It gets old real quickly, but so do all the false fire alarms in my building. Ironically, just this week, we had to evacuate for a real fire. There was a small fire on an elevator in my building. It was quickly extinguished by the fire company, but we were out of the building for half an hour and no one was injured. |

Article in the local paper this morning. There are seven Bennigan's in
Louisiana and they're not closing. Seems they are owned by a franchisee and he doesn't intend to close them as they are all doing well. Article said the restaurant had around fifty phone calls yesterday from customers wanting to know if they were closed or not. |

The Macaroni Grill near me was reviewed by the pub style restaurant reviewer in the local paper. It was *scathing* about how awful the service was. I forget the details, but the bartender was beyond rude. What were they doing to their employees to make them so hostile, I wonder. nancy |

The management clearly has an anti-customer mentality This is reflected by the wait-staff. It is further exacerbated when the wait-staff knows whatever they do will be dismissed by management. So if they are having a bad day, you are going to have a bad day as well. That seems to be the corporate mentality these days; if you don't like it, screw you - we can put somebody else at that table. They truly believe they are doing you some kind of favor by serving you and if you don't like it, you can leave. It's become the norm in any of those chain places. Paul |

It's ridiculous, who wants to live in that negative atmosphere all the time. This place closed shortly after that review. And right after that review the paper stopped letting the guy give stars (well, in his case, pretzels) and his reviews are almost always positive now. Sucks. > They truly believe they are > doing you some kind of favor by serving you and if you don't like it, > you can leave. It's become the norm in any of those chain places. I eat at chains occasionally, I have to say I can't complain about the service. Well, there was the guy who knelt down, I don't like that much, but he wasn't actually rude. nancy |

I forget the details, but the bartender was > beyond rude. What were they doing to their employees to make them > so hostile, I wonder. Maybe they got their training at a ******* bar...??? ;-) Seriously, here's some reviews (including mine, natch!) from a local Chicawgo site about a ******* bar that most everyone seems to hate. I thought my review was scathing, but every time a new negative review is posted my jaw drops - and I'm real jaded. Anyways, these are pretty funny, you can't make this stuff up! A coupla excerpts, read the whole thread for larfs, my entire review is at the end : http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-closet-chicago "The Closet: "Was I having a nightmare? You know, the one where I'm stuck in a 90's cliche and my mullet keeps getting caught in my thick gold chain and someone keeps stepping on my white Nikes? *shiver* Makes me break out in a cold sweat now just thinking about it. No, it wasn't quite THAT nightmare, but stepping in here is like experiencing something awfully close. I think I may have even recognized someone from my nightmare. How could it get worse? No Jameson at all. And $9 for a crappy jigger of Jack on the rocks. I'm not that picky, but come ON!' ------------------------- .. Nasty looking lesbo wearing stretch jeans and oversized sweater (that ain't hiding shit) playing bartender? Check. 2. No Jameson? Really. A bar without Jameson. No Sam Adams. About 6 beers on tap and 6 bottles. Crap liquor selection. Check. 3. *******s who don't get out enough. Check. 4. *******s who think they need to go to a ******* bar to be a *******. Check. 5. Intense feelings of regret over the fact that I will never get back the two hours and $35 that I spent there. Check ------------------------------ You know, being *** in Texas, I understand being uncomfortable - really. But when I go to a *** bar - and not only *** - ******* bar - I should NEVER feel like I don't belong. This place is full of regulars and a few of them. And my partner and I walk in to be stared at like we don't belong?! I'm sorry, I was out shopping and wanted to be in a family environment for an hour to settle down. Instead we're having to listen to these older women discussing their lives so loudly. And no women's basketball game on!? What!? I did go to a ******* bar right? It boggles the mind. One time we went in there and an older gentleman nursing a beer had his dog in there. Wow, that would be fantastic! But I bet I can't b/c I'm not a regular. And the beer and liquor selection are ridiculous! I'm glad I like Southern Comfort, b/c there's nothing else I would choose. Not one beer would I want to drink there. The taps and bottles are such random choices. I don't understand this place. And I hate when stereotypes stare me in the face when I'm one trying to change all of that. And DO NOT stare at me weird when I kiss my girlfriend!! It - is - a - ******* - bar. Jeez... ---------------------------------- That smell, what is it? Ah yes, it is The Closet My skin ... EEW! ... it crawls ---------------------- If you are a guy (*** or straight) you are welcome when they are not busy. Otherwise you are not wanted...even despised. My favorite story is when the fireplug-of-a bulldyke bartender refused to serve me a glass of water, after I had been sitting there all night ordering drinks...tipping her very well. Does that even make sense? Ever hear of dram shop laws? That was the last time I went there.. A previous time the bouncer told me to get one of my acquaintances into rehab, cause she thought he had a serious problem. Yet they continued to let him in night after night, get a few drinks out of him, and only then, kick him out. Such concern. I have to add that I have seen other dykes treated like crap by the charming staff . So even if you are *** girl you are not safe from the hate. I just don't understand what they are so angry about. -------------------------------------- The bartenders are rude, and even though I've seen them warm up a little to some of their more regular customers, mostly they're just surly and apparently unhappy to be working there. I can't blame them though, since they work in a dump ---------------------------------- What do you get when you mix snobby bitch dykes, a crummy smelly fugly bar and Britney Spears? The Closet. Absolutely the WORST establishment ever in existence. Do NOT go here unless you are suicidal and ready to kill yourself because this crap hole will absolutely verify your every reason for wanting to GET OFF PLANET EARTH. UGH. ------------------------------------- The Closet - a total hole in the wall, dirty little *** bar with very interesting patrons. I'd imagine that if you're not into the more "clubby" type of bars or if you live nearby, the Closet is a great place to go. But honestly? It's not my first choice. It's not even my second or third. Wait..It may not even be in my top ten. I've only met one bartender who actually had a personality and didn't swipe their tip off the bar faster than you could actually put it down. They don't accept credit cards, which was said in another review and is a major downfall for many people. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting. On weekend nights they overcrowd the bar and go way over the legal capacity posted right by the front door. Now that may not be a big deal to some people, but considering the actual size of The Closet, I sure as shit wouldn't want to be stuck in there with over one hundred people if a fire broke out in the backroom. It's just unsafe. Small, stinky, over-priced bar with a not-so-friendly staff and very judgmental patrons who, to be honest, shouldn't throw rocks when they live in glass houses. I guess that's what happens when you have nothing better to do but sit in one bar whenever you have free time -------------------------- GREGORY MORROW writes: The Closet is a ghastly dump in every way, e.g. nasty staff, rip off drinks, and tar - paper shack "decor". The gals that work here remind one of guards in those old female prison movies - they loathe their jobs and it SURE shows. This is what a bulldyke bar in South Bend IN c. 1948 must have been like, as they still have the "We're the ONLY game in town, so like it or LUMP IT " attitude. And because of constant problems with toilets overflowing, out - of - order smoke eaters, and malfunctioning beer tap lines the place literally does STINK... When there are ethically - run *** businesses around such as Unabridged Books, Sidetrack, Ping Pong, Roscoe's, etc. you have to wonder what the MO of a place like the Closet is. You can drop hundreds or even thousands of dollars here over the course of time (as I and many of my friends did) and the staff and owners will merrily continue right along to not only ignore you but to also be downright rude to your face. Very puzzling! Ladies, you need to get out of the Bat Cave that is the Closet and go over to Cocktail or Sidetrack to see how a bar should be run. Whatever - the Closet should be featured as a case example in every business school curriculum on how NOT to run a business... This stretch of Broadway now has some groovy businesses (restos and such). It's nice to see these stylish new ventures and their customers who are obviously having a good time. And then there is the Closet, still dank after all these years. It looks like some skid row bar out of the set of that famous 1945 alcoholism movie _The Lost Weekend_...with 2007 Ritz - Carlton prices, natch. Maybe the owners will even let you hock your typewriter there for a drink, lol... The two old nasty dyke owners don't care.. Example: patrons used to provide nice food for Sunday Night Football, various holidays, even the memorial "services" of several patrons who passed on. The owners would never even bother to thank the folks (let alone show up) who took the time, trouble, and money to donate the food or whatever, they simply appear to open the place and take their cash drop to the bank. The most egregrious example of such rude nonsense was when they decided to have a "birthday party" for a long - time customer - and the celebrant's PARTNER was asked AT THE END OF THE PARTY to pony up the dough for the cheap Jewel sheet cake and Dollar Store decorations, the partner was even presented with RECEIPTS for this plush celebration, LOL...!!! Besides which they've never given back to the *** community...in fact they are an embarrassment TO the *** community. The nitwit loser staff have apparently been chosen for their TOTAL lack of customer service skills - not to mention sheer stupidity. I've seen some REALLY ugly incidents here, instigated by the staff. I guess they don't realise that folks go out to have a GOOD TIME. Toxic bartender Karen is the *worst*, she'd make Hitler cower. Doorkeeps Lisa and Tabitha are not much better. Tabitha once refused entrance to a party of Europeans because she didn't know what a *passport* was - let alone that it's a valid ID for entering a bar; she's also the one who routinely SHINES her flashlight RIGHT into a patron's eyes [!]. Lisa once made a HUGE ugly scene because somone inadvertently and innocently poured themselves a cup of coffee, using HER Sylvester the Cat coffee mug. DUH! These girls *really* need anti - depressants, lol... WATCH your money - NEVER leave a wad of cash on the bar. Some of the barkeeps suffer from "sticky finger syndrome". I witnessed one *really* blatant "shortchanging" incident. The patron got her proper change back when she threatened to call 911... Oh, and I'm banned here, which I consider the supreme mark of honor, lol... Addenda added 3/5/08: - To the poster who mentioned that they only had one kind of beer: years ago the place apparently bounced a check to their liquor distributor. This a liquor code violation, and a place that does this is FOREVER DOOMED to a COD - only basis for future liquor deliveries. They are poorly stocked with the giggle juice because they don't have the cash on hand for liquor purchases. The owners are SO cheap that they mark their liquor bottles to ensure that there's no over - pouring! - In January of ' 04 they were closed down for a week because of late - night overcrowding. They over - crowd because that's the only shift on which they make any money..." </> |

Never, no never. We were at a Macaroni Grill with another couple after an early play. I ordered as I often do a dish of spaghetti & Meatball(s). The dish was served and the meatball(s) were still FROZEN in the inside. It took me 10 minutes to get someone's attention. by the time they nuked the meatball(s) everyone else at the table was finished with their dinner. Needless to say it left me a bit UNHAPPY. -- Old Scoundrel (AKA Dimitri) |

The last time I was there, a young lady was sitting behind me, and she would not eat because her burger had mustard on it. Ooops, the poor girl was not from around here. Chili's is the one chain that we've now been to 3 times, mainly b/c that's about all that was either on offer or was within walking distance - no one wanted to get back into the car! We're headed home now and just stopped in Gila Bend AZ for lunch (113 F, thank you) at the "Space Age Cafe," a kitchy little roadside joint. The DH ordered a cheeseburger that was <OMG!> a cheeseburger! It was a real hamburger patty with real cheese, a piece of real (okay, Iceberg) lettuce, a real tomato (one that looked like it had actually been attached to a plant grown in the ground) with condiments in red, yellow and plain squeeze bottles. No "special sauce," no "1/4 lb, triple stack, heart attack," no add-ons that a good piece of beef doesn't need. And it was $3.29 which included non-greasy onion rings and a "bottomless" glass of iced tea. The DH said it actually *tasted* like a hamburger he'd make for himself at home on the grill. It sez somethin' about somethin' that he actually commented on it more than once. In the case of the bar I was speaking of, you hafta wonder why a bar would have such nasty staff, but then the owners aren't any better and are stupid to boot...
