I will occasionally get a Dairy Queen. Even better in our area, though, is an ancient frozen custard stand that makes the "real stuff". Of course, they always have vanilla and chocolate, but they have an ever changing list of flavors at any given time. They seem to be partial to fresh fruit flavors, particularly berries, but I've also seen guava, peach, mango, and papaya. This is seriously good stuff. The other day I was making a many stop trip to run errands and was in and out of the heat countless times. I went through the Dairy Queen drive thru and got a large chocolate malt. God, I hope nobody reads this! Processed food manufacturers are actually able to hide it away. Mind you, have double or more than the "serving size" and you're really putting on the trans fats. You're correct. If "hydrogenated" is anywhere in ingredients list, it's trans fat. I did notice recently that Canada does account for every single 0.1g of trans fat on their nutrition labels. Lucky BUMS!!! The FDA is a long standing joke, here in America. Best, Andy |

And while we're on the subject of malteds, while we were at the Shady Dell in Bisbee AZ a couple of weeks ago, we stopped for a wee bite of lunch at Dot's Diner which is on the premises. This is a diner that seats about 8 folks on stools at the counter - little bitty place. The diner originally came from LA and is a gen-u-wine 50s diner. Along with the perfect hamburger I ordered for lunch, it would have been a crime against nature to order anything other than a chocolate malted. They even had those funny blenders that you position the metal carafe under - the blender bit is like a long metal stalk that hangs off the motor housing. What a treat to watch the counterman plop in *real* ice cream, plop in *real* milk and *real* chocolate syrup along with the *real* malted, uh, malt. Yum! Yum! > > Terry "Squeaks" Pulliam Burd I will definitely have to remember this place the next time we venture down to Bisbee. That would be a *must* stop for lunch! Here in Phoenix there is an old drugstore dating back to the 1930s, that no longer serves as a pharmacy, but still retains the original soda fountain with all its equipment where one can order malts, sundaes, sandwiches, burgers, etc. The store part has been turned over to selling collectibles, memorabilia, and the like. We go there for lunch from work on occasion. Speaking of the malt mixer, I bought a vintage one, made in the 1940s, from a now defunct drugstore. I have had it for a long time and it sits on my kitchen counter. This is the single model, although they were also models made with 3 and 5 mixer heads. The one in the picture isn't mine, but is the exact same model. You certainly can make a gen-u-wine malt in it. http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=juzseu&s=4 Hamilton Beach made most of these, although there were several other less known brands.
