Default Food to mark opening of the Olympics

Hi

I'm just wondering if people are planning to cook up Chinese food for
the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

Cheers

My turn to cook that night, and I hadn't planned on doing so. Baked
chicken with rosemary, roasted potato, kumara, carrot and parsnip
chunks, peas.

I have no interest. But do wish the Olympics were being held
elsewhere.

Don't even know when it starts so can't say what I'll be eating
when.

I think I'll do something Taiwanese.

Is it just me, or am I the only one who has no interest in the Olympics?
I think its terrible that the Olympics are being held in China because
of the intense pollution and the government oppression. An area where
reporters can't report effectively, where the citizens' rights are
heavily suppressed by their government, and where athletes have to wear
masks in order to breath isn't my idea of a good Olympics venue. Its
enough that the Chinese government is a huge debt holder of the United
States, but I don't have to allow them to showcase their country in my
living room.

Long before the Chinese were invited to host these games, I considered
the Olympics a scam. I don't encourage any athletes to boycott the games
because China is hosting them, that should be their decision. On the
other hand, I have been boycotting the Olympics since 1976, which is
when I realized the games were a commercial sporting event designed to
separate me from my money.

I don't plan to watch any of the Olympics contests, nor have I done so
since 1976 because they are all just commercials interspersed with a few
seconds here and there of athletics and because amateurism was tossed
out the window.

I would watch the games if they were what they are purported to be,
contests among dedicated amateur athletes from various nations. What the
Olympic games really are, is an attempt by professional athletes to
pursue even more advertising dollars and for national governments to
gloat that they won the Olympics to give their citizens some sort of
misplaced sense of national pride. No thanks. Its a shame that the
Olympics have become so distorted from what they used to be; the
original concept was wonderful.

I enjoy watching the opening ceremonies, but not this time. If I were to
watch the opening ceremony, I supposed I would serve a Chinese dinner?
Seems only appropriate considering the venue is China.

It is not just you. I don't know when they start, but I guess judging by
this thread it's soon.

<curmudgeon with a sense of history>

As I mentioned elsewhere, perhaps I'll make something Taiwanese...

I think China was a horrible choice, for all the reasons you mention
and more. What have we had so far, protests aimed at the torch,
reporters showing how they are being censored, terrorists attacking
and killing the police, people who lost their homes to the Olympic
venue ... oh, and dog is off the menu.

This is working out just great. What a surprise.

TV had ruined the Olympics. I remember when I was younger, you'd
go out of your way to watch the games. Now all you see are highlights
of some athlete's life, a bunch of commercials and ... now and then,
Oh, by the way, So and so won this competition. They don't even show
the games much of the time.

I don't care about the professional/amatuer status of the athletes one
way or another.

You think beef and broccoli would be a suitable nod to the games?

I never have any interest in the Olympics. Or, at least, not much.
If it's winter
and I happen to see a curling match I'll hang around for a while and
watch.
If it's summer and I see some fencing, ditto.

Otherwise, it's just sports and holds no interest for me.

My interest seems to have dwindled--aided by the fact that I don't
watch TV. Still, I might have watched diving, but I probably will
just forget. Then there is the venue.... And all the drug
scandals... Sad.

Maybe I will look at my Tibetan cookbooks or go to a Tibetan
restaurant. Hey! I LIKE that idea!

heh. I think yesterday I heard two days, so I am thinking
tomorrow. But I don't know whether that comment was heard the day
it was uttered, so don't count on that!

I have a schedule here that says opening ceremonies are on the
8th at 8pm. NBC. My DVR says it's 7:30. Whatever.

Oh, you have reminded me. There is also the focus on what TPTB
think we should want to see.... Also, the things not being shown
as they occur, so we already know the results...

Nah. Probably a couple buffalo rib-eye steaks with a custom 5-spice powder
(one spice per continent/Olympic ring) rub and a ton of sautéd onions
washed down with a few cans of Coors Light beer.

And eaten in world record time!!!

Maybe I'm an Olympics Scrooge, too, Stan, but I have no desire to watch
them, either. It's the Summer Olympics, anyway. Do I want to watch people
run around a track like Human Nascars? Not really. *If* I ever watch an
Olympic sport, it's wintertime and it's the Luge or the Ski Jump.

I also don't agree with the politics of where the Summer Olympics are being
held this year.

Be that as it may, it's still the best of the best world athletes!

It's there for your enjoyment, should you choose to partake.

I would rather think of the chinese kids and women working in sweat houses
so Asda and Tesco can sell cheap clothes and eletrical goods.

While true, the problem with your thinking is not the Olympics. China's
problem will still exist afterwards.

Enjoy the sports while it's happening! You had four years to bitch. Shut
Up!!!

Tiananmen Squares

Directions

1. Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat.
2. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted.
3. Remove from heat.
4. Working quickly, add rice krispies cereal, and stir until the cereal is well coated.
6. Press the mixture evenly into a greased 13 by 9 by 2 inch pan.
7. When cooled, cut into squares.

Note: For a bigger batch, increase the quantities and use a large tank
instead of the saucepan.

I'm disinterested in it, too -- but when the best athletes in the *world*
compete in about a million different categories, it's hardly "just another
sports event".

7:30 is there correct time there has been a change. They have been
announcing the chance of the evening news.

Hmmm. I haven't even though about the concept.

Maybe a giant Chinese Chicken Salad buffet. :-)

Picking up company around 1:00 PM at the train station.

I'm thinking of breathing in car exhaust to support the atheletes that have
to compete in the pollution.

Nope, you're not the only one, Stan.

Sounds like a terrific idea. Can I come to dinner?

That explains how I missed it! Heh. I will most likely watch them,
or at least record them and watch later.

I'm willing to truncate this to "I don't agree with the politics
of the Olympics".

That aside, no matter where they are held the Olympics are hugely
environmentally destructive. Look what they're going to do
to the last remaining open space / wildlife habitat in east London.

I'm a shark. You can *be* dinner.

I hadn't thought about it, but maybe we'll all go to PF Chang to
commemorate the occasion.

Ditto. I enjoyed watching the "women" compete in the swimming
competitions.

The drug scandals aren't so much fun anymore since East Germany bit the
dust...

The Big Deal over the Summer Olympics is kinda "over"...like the concept of
World's Fairs are "over", e.g. once a big deal, but the concept is stale....

The Summer Olympics should have a permanent home in Greece, the Winter Games
can be held in various venues...

Here in Chicawgo Da Mayor is angling for the 2016 Summer Games, it's this
constant pro - Olympics drone of the establishment media going on and on
that drives me crazy. Natcherly Chicawgo is extremely corrupt so us
taxpayers will be footing the bill, despite the fact the city is broke and
we have serious basic infrastructure needs (transport, schools). I hope to
GAWD that we don't get the games...give 'em to Rio, they haven't been held
in Latin America yet.
