Default Stop Me Before I Shop Again!

What is it about Bed, Bath and Beyond? 75% of their wares are either
absolute crap or gadgets and gizmos and the other 25% you can likely
find of better quality for a better price. So, why did I just drop
about $600 at BB & B last weekend?

I found 2 heavy duty indoor/outdoor tablecloths (one for dining table
- 60x102, one designed for deck umbrella table - 60x102, complete with
velcro fastener) on sale that were really cute [insert forefinger
twirling in nonexistent cheek dimple here] along with 12 napkins for
this weekend's soiree (US $93.95). Replaced (although that's too
strong a term, as what it replaced was much, much sturdier) a 40 year
old ironing board that was rusted to hell and a power struggle to set
up ($29.99), 2 on-sale beach towels (grandkids are coming to visit in
October and they're going to Dana Point's Baby Beach every day that
the weather allows) $59.98 - they are really, really thick, a granite
umbrella base for the deck table (our latest earthquake didn't faze
the thing, but you never know...and it was on sale!). Company-quality
stainless cake server, ditto punch ladle ($19.99 each). Kitchen rug
and matching slider rug, $47.98.

And this was just what was on my *list*.

Impulse buys: Insect dead chalk (claims to keep ants out for 8 weeks
simply by chalking the product around an ant's area of interest -
anyone in SoCal knows the problems we have with ants), $9.88; handheld
mandoline, $19.99 (looked really cool for slicing a modest amount of
stuff without having to dig out the big mandoline); mudslide mix (the
"adult kids" in the family seem to love this stuff), $5.99; rubber
ducky (replaces the one our 5 year old granddaughter swiped), $1.99;
solar lights "disguised" as rocks for the deck, $19.99; and a buncha
items that, 5 days later, I'm not sure what they are, but total about
$80.

And then we can talk about the makeup and hair products I bought and
never use...

P.T. Barnum was right.

To reply, replace "meatloaf" with "cox"

Will you adopt me??? <VBG> Yeah, it's way too easy to spend $$ on
impulse buys. I hope you had the 20%-off coupons handy!

Sky, who likes BB&B and LnT!

Because you had lots of those coupons.

I have 19 or 20 of them - seriously - in the car. They just keep coming.

Oh. I thought "Insect dead chalk" would be what you'd use to make a
police-style outline on the concrete of how the dead bug was found...

And, the best part is, even though those coupons have printed expiration
dates, the BB&B and LnT stores don't care and typically honor the
coupons regardless of that expiration date. Oh, and each store will
take the other's coupons, too!

A stupid friend of mine told me he'd heard about Stupid Anonymous, and
knowing I'd done AA said he'd like to go but being shy wanted me to
go with him the first time. I said sure, and a couple of days later we
took a meeting. He drummed up enough courage to share, stepped up to
the microphone, took a deep breath and said, "Hi. I'm Bob and I'm stupid."
Everyone else answered, "Hi, Tom."

At this point they have to figure in their prices that people will pay
20% less. Whatever, so long as they keep sending me the coupons.

I was very happy to find a set of sheets there a couple of weeks ago,
sheets that actually fit the bed!

BB&B built off the 2nd story corner of a Target so I can't visit one
without the other. One thing I've noticed about BB&B, more often than not
is it's a kid-free store. Meanwhile Target just steps away is Playland.

Egad! That is one place I have total self-control--as vs.
shopping for groceries when hungry, or shopping at an interesting

Because you take no pleasure in wasting money and do not seek to impress
with conspicuous consumption, perhaps. I buy beautiful and functional things
all the time, at great prices, so that I can do other, worthwhile things
with the money I did *not* waste. To knowingly waste money when there are so
many people who are needy just turns my stomach. To then brag about it is
just ****ing beyond sickening.

While I wouldn't say that about the OP, it is true that I don't
buy into the "gotta have" mentality. I find it odd, to say the least.

I don't need much of anything, but I try to support the economy.
Spend my stimulus money here and there.

I do my impulse shopping at the Asian market or job lot stores. BB&B
reins me in because their prices are so often beyond my impulse set-
point.

Recent purchases: silicone pot scraper, microwave egg cookers (45
seconds and it's perfectly soft-boiled for me)
pickle stabber, and (yet another) cookie portioner. Total: $5 plus
tax.

My dining room table is 140 inches, so I will splurge when I find a
12' tablecloth that's not too ugly.

But presumably on things you actually need/can use. I agree re
the stimulus money. I am spending that locally. I suppose one
really should use it on a thing/things one wouldn't normally have
bought.

I don't have a problem with people spreading the money around
if they've got it. Keeps the stores open and in business. That's
all I'm saying. I certainly don't judge what other people spend their
money on. I certainly buy some things I don't actually need.

Oh jeez, there you go AGAIN with your crocodile tears of phony - baloney
pontificating...

The OP earns her money fair and square so's she can spend it anyhow she
wants...

Maybe if you got up off your ass you could earn the moolah for that new
kitchen you are always pining about...

I am spending my stimulus money for Christmas and winter birthday gifts from
this place, a fine source for Iowa pork:

http://www.amanameatshop.com

That way I not only help the economy but I will also help out a locally -
based Iowa business. Iowans had and are having a tough time because of the
horrible floods earlier this summer. The least I can do is buy my hams 'n
stuff from them, hopefully it will help their ecomony a tiny bit...

Coincidentally, so is the other BB&B -- Bondage, Bestiality & Beyond.

(laugh) Nah, the sheets today are made to fit I don't know
whose bed, my mattress is so thick and then I have a
featherbed on top of that! and the sheets are still all saggy!
Can't stand it.

Well, I'm sure all of us, or most of us, do by unneeded things at
times. I used to be much worse at that--esp. when I was first out
working and earning money. Even up to when I had my daughter for
that matter. Just changed what I spend the money on. Maybe
that's one reason I stopped spending on things--kids are expensive.

That's the best of all worlds. I am spending locally too. My
daughter will get her $300, and I told her she had to spend it in
this country and not order things from elsewhere with it....

I think narcissism is a very polite term for it. But yes, certainly part of
the syndrome. Ugh.

You can spend locally and support the economy without wasting money. Someone
needs to tell this stupid bitch that this is just not cute. It's just not.

She made a point of telling us the "75% of the items are overpriced" before
she described her binge. Bleah. Support the merchants who give you a good
value on the same thing and support more merchants or give to charity with
the rest if you want to spend it. I buy lots of things "just because I like
them."

Anyone making a point of telling you they spend lots of money on overpriced
things has an agenda. They are either trying to convince you that they are
stupid twits, or engaging in the insipid pastime of conspicuous consumption.
The last refuge of the talentless and witless. It's the display, not the
actual activity that gives her away. Ugh.

Guess you didn't catch the part where I'm a litigation paralegal.
Don't need a Sugar Daddy, thank you. I splurge at will and pay for it
myself out of my munificent paycheck.

I refuse to shop at BB&B. They jack their prices up, fill my mailbox
with crap and expect me to carry their coupon around in order to receive
anything like a reasonable price. And the staff at our local store,
when you can actually find them, are certified idiots.

I usually go well out of my way to support local brick-and-mortar
operations. But even considering shipping costs I can *always* find an
on-line vendor who can beat BB&B's coupon prices on any given item.
