Sabretts for me. Nathans are overpriced.

Sabretts makes two kinds, they make skinless hot dogs and the much
better natural casing frankfurters. The street venders sell the
skinless, not bad but not nearly so good as the natural casing dawgs.
On Lung Guyland most of the stupidmarkets (Pathmark) sell natural
casing Sabrett's, about $8/lb.... do not boil them, do not grill them,
_griddle_ them, *carefully*, you do not want them to split.

I've always price bought. A couple weeks ago, based on a discussion on
in here on favorite franks, I picked up a couple packages of Hebrew
National (which were on a fwofer sale). I didn't see anything different
about them. Granted, I didn't do a side-by-side taste test. But in a hot
dog, I didn't see any difference. Since I don't eat them "neat", I'm back
to whatever's cheapest.

Alas, I often cook for those who want their meat-well, dead-including hot
dogs.
If they are split, they are dead.

Ya gotta admit though, Hebrew National and Ball Park are different-no?

I've mentioned before that I don't care for beef hotdogs. The reliable
pork-based ones from days gone by like Oscar Mayer had switched to
including various amounts of poultry products, ruining taste and
texture.

Johnsonville has a natural-casing pork wiener that's pretty good. One
of the local chains (Schnucks) has introduced their own natural-casing
pork/beef wieners. Also not bad.

Ball Parks and Sabretts are SPAM dogs. Having to make a choice I'd rather
have Sabretts with kraut and Guldens brown in NYC on any street corner
rather than Ball Park franks at the Citizen's Bank Park at a Phillies game!

I've been eager to try Papaya King and Grey's Papaya in uptown Manhattan,
as seen on Food TV.

Well, I think I just said that HN didn't strike me as any different than
whatever brand's on sale. I don't know if I've ever had Ball Park; I'm
not brand conscious.

Same with Vienna Beef, main purveyor of my fave Chicago style franks. I
only recently discovered this when a couple weeks ago I went to the rare VB
chi-dog vendor and ended up with the smaller, skinnier, caseless dog instead
of the larger fatter natural dog. I was quite bummed.

I am very partial to Trader Joe's natural pork
casing Sweet Basil Pesto SMOKED CHICKEN &
TURKEY SAUSAGE.

On days likely to be hot, when I don't want
to heat up the air in the house, I'll move
the hot pot into the bathroom and boil a pot
of water, then pour it into a large Pyrex
measuring cup with one sausage at the bottom.

After several minutes, I pour out the water
and eat the sausage. I used to wrap it in TJ's
mediterranean flat bread along with chopped
shallots and some Dijon mustard, but recently
I just eat the sausage straight. Fewer carbs
that way.

I've been starting the morning that way for
a few weeks now. It's high protein, and not
much calories (170, acoording to the package).
Then I avoid meat for the rest of the day,
to avoid the sleep problems which come from
eating high-protein foods late in the day.

Uncured and antibiotic- and hormone-free?

I never was very big on sausages, but I recently tried and liked
Niman Ranch's Chipotle Cheddar sausages. I wrap them in half a
low-carb pita bread. Today I mixed my regions up and put a bit of
sriracha sauce on this. Not bad.

I will take a gander at TJ's offerings.

Ah. Good. That makes it a lot better when you have to crap in the middle

Gray's Papaya (if they stil exist, at least some have changed
to other names) are pretty good, if it's skinny hot dogs
you want. Not as good as dogs you get in Chicago or Rochester
but those are a different, fatter style.

A feature of the Gray's Papaya operation is the grilled onions.
Be sure to ask for them when you order.

It's indoors. It's got a window and a door.
Closing the door cuts off the atmosphere in
the bathroom from the house. Opening the window
allows the hot, humid air from boiling to vacate
the house.

I was pleased to find Johnsonville skinless pork wieners available in
NorCal once again. They were on the deli shelves (as opposed to
counter) of my local SaveMart. They are as good as some of the similar
sausages made by a couple of 'artisan' sausage makers that once existed
here in the Sacramento area.

Citizen's Bank Park serves Phillies franks made by Hatfield, at least
according to the Hatfield website.
I've tried Sabrett's and was not impressed. Best hotdog I ever had was at
Maui dogs in Wildwood NJ. I've always wanted to try Yocco's.

Best Dogs I've ever eaten, was Johnsonville Smoked Frankfurters in the
Natural Casing, but I was only able to get-eat these when in Sheboygan,
Wisconsin. As far as I knew, Johnsonville never marketed these outside
this area?

I've tried many, Nathans, Hebrew National, Vienna, David Berg, Deli
bought, etc, and IMO the Johnsonvilles were the tastiest. The real
deal.

Anybody remember the big fat Veal Hot Dogs? Mark

They aren't bad. They are skinny dogs.

They are actually in midtown on the west side. One is 3 blocks up from

If thats the case it isn't hard to understand why they are lame.
Hatfield used to be a average quality packer and got into making cheap
quality for big box.

At Nathans, quite often the grill (or griddle) is always going and has lots
of hot dogs. Sometimes the dogs do not sell as quickly as the grill person
would anticipate. Ergo off to the side there are the burnt or charred dogs.

IMHO better then the others.

In addition Nathans had a fluorescent green relish. Very good stuff.

Yes really.

Certainly uncured, I always check for that.
Avoiding curing salts and beef are important
to me. It says "All Natural" on the package,
but I don't know if that means antibiotic-
and hormone-free. I don't think hormones are
normally given to chickens and turkeys.

I don't see anything touting the characteristics that I find
important. I'll go take a look. Thanks.

I'll look. Uncured is a must for me. The other may occasionally
be negotiable. Maybe.

I've run cross those shittly little VB's too. I hope yours was at
least dressed well. Usually they use the little ones for double dogs.

Johnsonville is pretty good for store bought stuff. I'd prefer
butcher made brats. Costco used to have some that were actually very
good too. Since the kids moved out we haven't been going there much.
I miss some things they have there.
