Default E. coli cases in Mass. traced to Whole Foods...

I really want to know what brand this was sold under--or is this
the ground beef they sold in their meat department?

I find it somewhat ironic given that one shops there for quality
food, and the added assurance that the food doesn't have issues....

Well, y'know, if it doesn't have a bit of *everything* in it, it's not
whole food.

I quit shopping at our whole foods when it came out LOW on the list
for "Best Store Hygiene".

Isn't that interesting--in a very negative sort of way. I may
have to rethink my shopping strategy.

Not just organic. They SEEMED to take special care with their
offerings--even though they have obviously lost much of their
original rationale over the years. I would have expected better
from them. Obviously I am wrong. To the degree other folks had
similar expectations, this is going to really hurt them--and I
gather WF is not doing particularly well right now. (I always
find myself thinking of successful stores/chains that forget what
made them successful....)

It really just depends on the particular store. The one I worked at was
clean and the employees were trustworthy. The manager of the meat
department used to let me know when they were pulling meat from the case
(they had pretty restrictive rules about how long meat could be sold
from when it was received in the store), and I used to get tenderloin
and ribeye for the price of ground beef (plus my discount) on a fairly
regular basis. I was buddy-buddy with the cheese dept. manager, too. I
used to get just-past-the date stuff from her for free all the time
(allowed by store policy at the time). Mmmm, creme fraiche!

Never had a problem with anything I ate from the store I worked at. That
being said, I worked there, and so I knew what s.o.p. was.

In what way is it Whole Foods' fault that the meat vendor they used had
the meat processed at a facility that ended up becoming tainted?
Frankly, with the meat industry being what it is, I am surprised how few
people actually become sick.

Most of the things Whole Foods carries are not organic. Again, quality
and safety really depend on the integrity the workers have in regard to
handling the food. Of course, in the case of e.coli, it is very hard to
have anything close to competitive pricing with the kind of micro-
managing required to 100% ensure that every bit of meat the sell is
completely safe. I still eat my burgers rare, for what it's worth.

Turns out it was Coleman's beef. That is also interesting,
because if I wanted to buy hamburg elsewhere, that's what I would
have looked for. Ironically, I saw a sign tonight that said
hamburg was on sale at WF! No signs at all about the E. coli.

I think if I get ground meat, it is going to be ground to
order--or I will grind it here.
