Default Paul Newman...

Folks, I've recently been reading about the declining health of Paul
Newman...reports give him "weeks" to live.

I was re - arranging my pantry today and noticed his smiling face on the
labels of his products...

What's he done for charity with the sale of those products is a *great*
thing...

Gads, I remember when he and Joanne Woodward were "young" - maybe I'm
getting old, or just waxing nostalgic.

Anyways...

Greg, according to items I've read recently, Newman has terminal lung
cancer. This has apparently been going on for some time, as reports as
early as February noted that he was denying any illness which the tabloids
were attributing to photos that had been taken. In the photos I saw, he
looked extremely frail and very ill.

Yes, I remember so many of his and Joanne Woodward's early films, a few
together and many separately.

It is, indeed, a reminder that we are all getting older. I will be 64 next
January, and I find it hard to believe. :-)

I guess I'm some bouts of nostalgia, too, as I've been watching quite a few
older films on www.hulu.com.

My 50th birthday is tomorrow, and I'd prefer to ignore it.

But mom has something arranged for tomorrow afternoon,

So, scratch the plan for Grey Goose all day. :-(

And speaking of careers, if any of you like playing Six Degrees, you're
quite close to Paul Newman, since I've worked with him. Yer welcome!

As seen on TV: the Newman's product line is the brainchild of his daughter.
He's just the face. Good for charity products, if you can excuse the HFCS.

other than a couple of the salad dressings, which products
have HFCS?
i know the assorted Newman-Ohs don't because that's my (rare)
substitution for my lamented Oreos... and i buy the lids (no
filling Newman-Ohs) for ice cream sandwiches

i recently complained to Ben & Jerry's that using HFCS in
anything means the product is NOT "all natural". grumble

lee,

In all fairness, I was only speaking of the Newman's salad dressing line. I
don't shop the cookie aisle so I plead no knowledge there.

Lots of things are "natural". To wit, the recent closing of a Chicago
whole Foods because of rodent feces.

A belated Happy Birthday to you, Michael.

No need to ignore the birthdays, either. My mother, who truly was not
one to advise wisely about much of anything, and was quite vain about
her age to boot, was actually very pleased to celebrate the
anniversaries of her birth.

When I asked her why she loved birthdays so, she said at some point
she had thought about her upcoming birthday, realized what the
alternative was, and decided from that time on, she would enjoy each
and every birthday.

Without some kind of sweetener rodent feces taste like shit.

I keep an eye for them on eBay, but nothing interesting
has shown up recently.

I did treat myself to some fresh red currants today.
I've only had them dried before. They looked so
beautiful fresh -- transparent red like little rubies.
Rather expensive at $2.99 for a very little container
of them, but I thought I'd regret not trying them.

They were okay, but disappointing. Not especially
flavorful, and they have little pits in them. Now,
I remember that dried currants have those pits, too.
That's why the first bag of dried currants I bought
at Trader Joe's was the last.

After buying the currants, I went by the new Asian
food store to see if I could find that weird bottle
of "cooking liquor" or the dried fruit I wanted to
try. I couldn't find either one of them. I guess
they aren't going to stock them anymore. But after
trying the currants, and being disappointed, I
figured I probably would have been even more
disappointed by the dried fruit. After all, if it
was such great fruit, why don't all Asian food
stores carry them?

Yes, easy decision because with the new scenario, most people will have to
work into their 80's.

Some will. Perhaps I will, depending on my spending patterns
and the investment results of my retirement savings.

However, the part of the system that should go away, and largely
has gone away except in the public sector, is the steep,
age-dependent compensation curve of the older defined benefit plans.
Older workers were subsidized by younger workers due to the
multiplicative effect of pension benefits being determined both
by final salary and years of service. It runs counter to economics,
since mathematically income and savings created early in your career
should have a much greater impact on your retirement position
(due to growth and compounding); instead such plans give artificial
weight to earnings late in your career.

An excellent reform would be to get rid of defined benefit plans
entirely. (By that I mean, eliminate any tax preference for
them.) At the same time, a social safety net for people who
cannot work is necessary in any civilized country.

Happy belated birthday! They aren't really important anymore, are they? I
don't celebrate mine and it's not because of fear of getting older or worry
about some random number. It's because it's just a number. Another day on
the calendar.

Okay, when I turned 18 it was a big deal. The legal drinking age in
Tennessee was 18 at the time. Couldn't get anyone to card/proof me to save
my life! Then they changed it to 19 but they grandfathered in the already
18 year olds. By the time they changed it to 21 I was past caring. LOL

I fail to understand people who get all upset about turning 30 or 40 or 50
or... you're only as "over the hill" as you let yourself feel

So do the Grey Goose today :-)

I'll never tell.

Have a nice birthday.

Wayne,

Remember there is only one true definition of getting old.

Getting old is when your mind makes promises you body refuses to keep.

Based on that I'm 180.

Try to stop hurting yourself while jumping your horse... you might just make
it

That's just about reality the way things stand now, anyway.
However, defined contribution plans should be mandatory
and near untouchable.
