Default Are they ripe yet?

Okay, I collect odd things that amuse me. What can I say.

With the tomatoes coming in, I have dedicated a little area
of counter space so they can hang out and ripen together.

When I walked into the kitchen this morning, I was struck
by just how silly this scenario looks.

Cute photo! I'm sure someone (Sheldon?) will chime in and tell you tomatoes
stop ripening the moment you pick them. I don't know if that's true since
I've never grown tomatoes.

I pick them when they start turning red. Maybe that's wrong but
when they really start to ripen, things come along and munch on
them. They were all much greener when I picked them.

I do the same, they ripen better this way, and as you say, they do not get
munched.

I'm sure Sam the Sheepdog (from the Warner Bros Cartoons) is
highly offended. They don't allow giraffes into their union.

I know, they had to punch the clock! Maybe the giraffe was on

I just remembered my mil would pick all the last tomatoes
before a frost and line them up on a shelf in the basement
and they would ripen over the next few weeks or whatever.
When it's chilly, I guess they take their time turning red.

They'd ripen quicker if placed in a brown paper bag, with a banana
they'll ripen even quicker.

I really like your countertop... but the backsplash is missing on that
side... and what's that spot on your wall? LOL

Next how about a picture of your garden...

I have tons of green tomatoes but so far only two have kinda
ripened... nights are too cold this year.

I don't know. The kitchen is due to be painted this fall. That
should be fun, it's bitch painting those cathedral ceilings. Also,
for whatever reason my camera is very forgiving. That counter
is very much in need of a good dusting.

No, I wouldn't want a backsplash on that side. The whole bank
of cabinets rather mimics a hutch.

It's cold here today. What a freaky August. Not complaining, I
like the cool weather. I'm thinking roast chicken for dinner!
I have leftover potato-onion gratin ala Gordon Ramsey as a
side.

Cute. Are you also the bean lady? How did your beans do? Mine are

Aww, I like you too. Your garden can't be that terrible. Mine isn't
looking so hot this year either, the weather hasn't cooperated.

Last month it was too hot and no rain at all. August has been cold
and very wet, it's raining now. It seems like summer is over before
it got started.

I still have most of a huge salad I prepared from yesterday's crop.
I'm thinking about that package of frozen ravioli.

Why silly? I have been known to have a tomato collection on my
counter, so it looks perfectly normal to me. (You do have a nicer
counter though!)

Before the first front my dad would pick all the green tomatoes, wrap them
individual in newspapaper, and store them in boxes in the basement. He tried
to arrange them so that top layers would be expected to ripen first. We
usually had ripe tomatoes well into the winter.

Sounds good to me! I grow mostly romas, which I freeze as they
become ripe. I think I'm going to wind up with a lot of green ones.
Weird summer weather we're having, There are bunches of romas
sitting there not doing a thing. I'll do as you say and perhaps I'll
be able to use them up.

I always wondered why those signs use an icon instead of, say, the word
"library". They seem to be geared to people who can't read, so why would
they be looking for a library?

I think that libraries are convinced that travellers are looking
for them, hence the international symbol. I present as proof,
the first thing they teach you in spanish class is Donde esta
la biblioteca?

I'm growing my own next year. I don't understand why the grocery chains here
sell those pale horrible "hothouse tomatoes" in August when the beautiful
once are growing all around North Carolina.

That's a shame. What varieties are you growing? I don't even recognize the
names of them any more when I see the plants in the garden shops. My father
grew Burpee Big Boys, then I think Burpee Better Boys in Maryland and they
were allll you want a tomato to be! Deep red and sweet. Eaten still warm
from the sun, sliced with just salt and pepper, maybe some mayo. Great with
grilled steak or on a sandwich. I have not seen ONE tomato like this this
year, and they have been around since late June. Our farmer's market is way
out of the way. It has a little branch just across the street from me but
they were out of tomatoes when I went Saturday morning.

I am not sure I have ever seen a local tomato in our chains. Our growing
season is really long, so I think it might be worthwhile to grow my own next
year.

You've taught him to sit up. Does he roll over and beg too?

======================================

Hey! I have been collecting giraffes for almost 40 years. Last
count (a year ago) I had over 150. Wish I had a digital
camera . . .

D-uB was in AZ, one of the zoos outside Phoenix, and saw this
8'-stuffed staute of a giraffe and immediately fell in love
with it. It never dawned on her about transportation issues or
cost... Simply repeated, "It's a giraffe." Like that solved
world hunger and physics.

It's a 3 legged stool, he most certainly has rolled over. Begging,
not so much.

Your cell phone doesn't have one?

It is worthwhile, IMO. They are cheap to grow and the vegetables just
keep coming. We are growing tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, jalapenos
and banana peppers. Next year, we are thinking about adding yellow
squash, zucchini and butternut squash. My sister has a huge garden, so I
get everything else from her.
