Went to the local county fair today, with a teenager (the one that
seems to have replaced my sweet little girl). We walked through the olde tyme farming tools exhibit (with a pump for the kids to pump, the spinners, the corn shucking machines, etc.), and then the crafts exhibits (including baking: interesting how they seemed to have judged the quick breads. The flat topped one won, but the light and dark and cracked topped ones did place. Then the teenager said she was hungry. Ok, they've got a dozen or more booths with various types of food for sale, plus two restaurant- ish places. After scoping them all out, she decides she wants a blooming onion. "That's around 800 calories, you know, most of it grease." She goes and buys it anyhow. That was from the grange people. I went to the rotary folks and got myself some johnny cakes with butter and what the kid told me was real maple syrup. "Yeah?" say I. "Sure, here's the container." speaketh he. "Maple-flavored syrup." reads the container. WTH, it was caramelized corn syrup, and tasted good. We found a shady spot to sit and eat, and then went to look at the cute little bunnies and chickens. She kept commenting on how cute the bunnies were. I kept suggesting how tasty lapin is. The chickens with the mops on their heads (and a few with the mops on their feet) were, well, chickens. They'd look better in my new pot. We saw one exhibit that gave meaning to the term "pig pile," checked out the sheep, goats, and turkeys, but passed on the cows. Child of my heart disappears for a bit, comes back with strawberry shortcake large enough for 2. Gets upset when I take 2 bites. She's got a quart of water as well. I sit down to reconnoiter with DH, who took his bicycle today, and of course the cell phones aren't working out here in the country. Child goes off on her own. Checked out the farm and other country equipment exhibits and sales halls (Hey Sheldon, you would have enjoyed that part--lots of toys), got my knife sharpened, and ran into a friend who mentioned she's looking to buy a couple of goats, then finally found the spousal unit. We're trying to figure out how to find the kid (remember, cell phones not working), when she shows up, with a caramel covered apple. I wonder why my darling child is not feeling well?.... maxine in ri |

I went to a local park that has an old fashioned somewhat working farm and the old tools were very interesting. People can be very inventive. > Then the teenager said she was hungry. Terrible, but funny. > She goes and buys it anyhow. That was from the grange > people. I saw some fluffy chickens at another park a couple of weeks ago ... darned if I can think of their name right now. Funny looking things. > Child of my heart disappears for a bit, comes back with strawberry > shortcake large enough for 2. Gets upset when I take 2 bites. I shouldn't have given her her whole allowance, then maybe she wouldn't have felt so bad. The other reason her stomach was queasy: she went off to the rides on her own, and went on two of them before she realized she was supposed to pay.... Old memory: When I was about 8 or 9, we went to the local amusement park. I loved the centrifugal force wheel, went on it twice. Then Mom bought me a hot dog, and let me go on the merry go round. Hot dog didn't like it, and left the ride.... maxine in ri |
