Default Slow cooker recommendation

I would appreciate recommendations for slow cookers, please.

About 9 months ago my wife pruchased a Rival 6 qt. oval crockpot -
this one featured a hinged lid. What a fiasco. We have two Rival
Crockpots that are smaller that never gave us a problem; one of them
is 15 + years old. We had a need for an oval crockpot that was larger
so we stuck with Rival. The hinge broke after using it 2 times. Two
metal pins fell out of the hinge into my sauerkraut and pork! I have
done so many product reviews on the Internet I'm seeing them in my
sleep. The results so far seem to be leaning towards the Chef Pepin 6
qt oval slowcooker

If anyone can recommend a slow cooker that does what its' supposed to
I sure would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Dick Williams

It sounds to me that yours did what it was supposed to do, but had a stupid
design feature, aka a hinged lid. They all work the same way. I've had
several. I got rid of mine and now simply slow cook in a regular pot.

I use a Dutch oven, in the oven.

Other than the pins falling out of the hinge, what didn't it do that
it's supposed to do? I what other way did it fail? How was the
sauerkraut and pork, other than a little metallic tasting?

Other than a design flaw, sounds to me like you've got a success there.

Yes! Hamilton Beach "stay and go" http://tinyurl.com/693eou

I had a Rival Crock Pot about the same size and, despite the controls,
it cooked at one speed BURN! When it burnt a batch of baked beans on a
setting of "warm" I threw it and the beans in the trash.

The Hamilton Beach is a keeper. I bought mine at Target. I love the
probe. I love the programs. I love the cooker.

Whatever you do don't buy a Kitchenaid (sp?) Chances are very good that the
pot will crack. I had a Rival but it only lasted a few months. I have an old
Hamilton Beach, maybe 30+ years old that still works and a new Hamilton
Beach. So far so good, I have had it 3 or 4 mos. I bought it at Target for
30 something dollars. The kitchenaid came from Amazon and I used once. They
took it back. I can't say enough bad things about Kitchenaid.

That's pretty interesting.

Do you have a time-temp control chart to go with this good idea?

I have a Rival about the same size but it doesn't have an attached lid. It
has settings for low, high and keep warm. I love it. It's just a ceramic
bowl inside the heater element and a glass lid.

I have the same type, Cheryl, and I've been very happy with it. I also
have a smaller round one that has stood the test of time.

Does yours also have timer settings for low (8 or 10 hours); high (4 or 6
hours); and then automatically go to keep warm after the time's up? I've
never had one like that before and it's too cool. Hot. Whatever.

No, mine has no timer settings. Just the temp settings of high, low, and
keep warm. It's not digital, just a single control knob.
