*I* would be somehow, sort of, maybe, um, ashamed to claim prize(s) for
something I had never tasted. But that's just my humble opinion.

Dollink, if you can get a 4th ribbon without tasting, imagine what you
could do with something you tasted!

My mother likes Haaavard beets, a preference she did not pass
down to me.

Only way I'll eat 'em is either roasted in chunks with plenty of
other root veggies, or shredded raw over gefilte fish.

4th place is simply shameful. It is clear that you have put in far too
few beets in the jar, having been unable to resist eating the rest.

You disgraced yourself again. And to think it would take submitting
just one extra entry, the heavenly Barb's Beety Beauty, to win *all* the
blue ribbons!

In spite of the irony, congratulations!

And what kind of pickle did you make with Balsamic Vinegar?

Make bread & butter pickles and use 1/2 cup balsamic as part of the
total cider vinegar measure; i.e., 2-1/2 cups cider vinegar, 1/2 cup
balsamic. I used Alesso brand supermarket balsamic. It's got a 6% acid
strength, I think. I'd have to look and right now IBePooped.

Thanks, Keith. What'll I do? Have more laughs. I've got an interview
with NPR's All Things Considered tomorrow morning. Don't know if it'll
be broadcast this weekend or ezzackly when‹the Fair runs two weekends.
And I'm still waiting to hear when the NYTimes thing is going to be
published.

Bully for you.

Ashamed? Me? LOL!! I revel in it! I'd be " somehow, sort of,
maybe, um, ashamed to claim prize(s)" for something I had said I made
but had not, in fact, made.

I'm not required to taste it. I'm required to make it and package it
and process it for safe shelf storage. Taste it? Pfftt!

Default Farmer's Market Tonight

It was a lovely evening for the market. Albeit, a bit warm, but still
nice. There was a little country and western band playing in the square
and I was able to sit at the fountain and listen for a while.

So, tonight's haul is:

• Okra
• Torpedo Onions (surprised to find them this late in the year)
• Heirloom tomatoes (since mine never did produce -- grrrrr!)
• Ultra-sweet grapes (sort of a red-and-yellow variety)
• Yellow flesh nectarines
• O'Henry peaches (I can taste why they are prized for canning!)

The folks with the peaches didn't have enough left for canning, but said
I could come by their farm stand during the week.

The okra was finally at a quality and a price that I could live with, so
much deciding to do on what I will prepare now!

A couple of the stands had some very nice looking corn, but at 3/$2 it
seemed a bit steep. It's much cheaper at the local grocers.

I was able to pass on the Dolce-Gabbana sunglasses. They were a "steal"
at 2/$20 ...

'Required' to make it? How is it required? I thought entering these
competitions was voluntary? Or isn't it? And seeing as how it's common
knowledge around here how much you abhor beets; so much so, I am
surprised you even allow them into your kitchen, let alone make them
and enter them in competitions, just to (maybe) get another ribbon.

It's on page 46 of the Rules and Premiums book, under Eligibility.
Writing one sentence was easier (but I guess not so clear) than saying,
". . .required to make it safe for shelf storage," ". . . required to
package it for safe shelf storage," and ". . . required to process it
for safe shelf storage."

> I thought entering these competitions was voluntary? Or isn't it?

It is.

Sure I do. I am easily amused by colorful ribbons. For the record,
though, The Great Minnesota Get-Together is the only competition I
compete in with my canning. I'm too lazy to chase all over the state as
some do. I'm a Ribbon Slut. We'd say we're Ribbon Whores but there's
no money in it. :-)

No, that's not what I meant... Obviously there are rules and regulations
you have to follow for health reasons etc. What I meant was is that you
are not 'required' to enter the dirt chunks in the competition, are
you? I mean, they don't give you a list of preserves/whatever that you
have to enter, or do they? I always thought that folks entered these
competitions to prove how good their preserves etc. were. Obviously you
don't care about the quality of the dirt chunks, so long as you get
your Ribbons. Oh well, if that what floats your boat, go for it.

It may well be a challenge for some. However, I didn't get the
impression that Barb thinks of it as a 'challenge' - because she said
it herself - she's a "Ribbon Slut".

Furthermore, IIRC, Barb sells (or used to sell) her products to some
food company for re-sale i.e. she either runs (or ran) some kind of
business by selling them, which of course is her prerogative and good
fortune. But... what I also find amazing is this: most of us get
all 'hot under the collar' if anybody else mentions anything they sell
or something that may involve any kind of profiteering for them on this
newsgroup - in fact they usually get accused of being spammers -
because r.f.c. is supposedly a non-commercial newsgroup. Makes you
think, doesn't it?

Ah, so you guys must hang out at r.f.p. - I should have realized. OK, in
that case, I'll take the liberty of crossposting there again (with
followup set to r.f.c.).

Just for the record, please note that Barb crossposted her OP in this
thread to r.f.p., r.f.c. and nm.general to share her news - and I just
replied to all three, like a lot of other folks did. (BTW, I hate to
break it to you, but your email program *does* do the cross posting
thing, as I saw your earlier reply to the OP and it too was crossposted
to all three groups.) At some point Barb removed the nm.general but
left in r.f.p. and r.f.c. so she obviously thought her post was
pertinent to both groups. So, I fail to see why you had a problem with
my crossposting and not your own, Barb's or anybody else's for that
matter.

Because two wrongs don't make a right?
Because "Do as I say, not as I do" is the slogan by which many people live?
Because Kathi is so technically inept she had no idea she was crossposting?

The world may never know...and personally, I'm fine with that.

Not quite sure what you're getting here. Are you saying that
crossposting is *always* wrong? Barb seemed to think that crossposting
was appropriate in this thread (and at least one other thread on the
same subject), so does that make her 'wrong' too? Or what?

I have seen a lot of that 'round here...

Then there must be a whole bunch of equally technically inept people out
there, judging by how many replied to all three groups. Either that or
they also thought it was appropriate to crosspost their replies. Dunno.

While your right hand was trying to flame Barb, apparently you weren't
aware of what your left hand was doing with the headers.

I think what Kathi was trying to point out is that Brian read your replies
(which I and apparently others as well interpretted to be thinly-veiled
snipes at Barb) on rfp and not rfc. So that is "how the heck" Brian saw
your post. I don't read here in rfc as much as I used to, so maybe I've
missed some turn in your posting behavior, but it seemed out of character
for you to respond as you did to Barb. I honestly found it jaw-droppingly
out of character for you. Barb has mentioned from time to time and ONLY
when asked if she is willing to sell her jams. She's on occasion stated
where to get Gedney's jams for which she doesn't exactly get staggering
riches - less than pennies per jar. Perhaps in your perception that's
spamming. It isn't in mine.

Let me c-l-a-r-i-f-y several things:

1) You obviously think that crossposing your above reply was appropriate
here, right? Or was your left hand busy with 'other things', maybe?

2) I am positive Barb was aware of what she was doing when she
crossposted the OP in this thread, as was I when I replied to her
post(s)... My only 'crime' was not realizing immediately that you
subscribe to r.f.p., so that's how you saw the post(s). For that I
apologize, most profusely.

3) I wasn't trying to 'flame' Barb. I was simply voicing my (also
crossposted) opinion, which <gasp> is what sometimes happens in Usenet
groups, or hadn't you noticed?

4) Although I admire your gallantry, I think that if Barb had gotten
as 'worked up' about my remarks to her as you seem to have, I am fairly
sure she would have 'taken me to task' herself.
