I adore "greens" like brussels sprouts and cabbage now - it's a wonder considering what my school 'cook' did to them all of those years ago. |

In high school the food was very good, so good that the cafeteria lines were very long so I ended up eating egg salad from the vending machine or or ham sandwiches from home most days in order to finish and socialize more quickly. In college most of the food was good except for corned beef and cabbage (about twice a semester) and liver-and-onions or bacon (about once a month, always Friday nights) when we'd goto the Student Union instead. gloria p |

I hardly ever got hot lunch at school.
Bread and butter usually. Once my lunchbox contained Mom's wallet. I had credit cards and cash and a hot lunch AND chocolate milk that day!!! ![]() Mom must've had some evening cocktails the night prior? ![]() Remember that they had lunch meal printouts for the parents? On a day of the week basis? Andy |

I could get it down, but it wasn't good in any way. For me the worst thing was this semi-warm, gloppy "cole slaw" slop we always got. It tasted like it was made with sour milk or something. This was in elementary school, we got a "hot pack," a "cold pack" and a little thing of milk and that damned rancid slaw stuff was in the cold pack almost every day. Nobody liked it. One time me and another kid named Chris Blumbach decided that maybe we weren't giving it a fair shot and we both ate ours. I was on the verge of throwing up for the next half hour or so. I don't remember Chris's reaction but I don't recall either of us ever attempting that experiment again. |

I think that square sausage "pizza" wasn't great, but it was fair game over the goulash. I always liked the fish sandwiches, but I avoided the hamburgers (if you think they contained meat) like the plague. Luckily, though, I was fortunate enough to grow up in a school system where starting with Middle School and all the way through High School, you had varied items to choose from for lunch. We had a salad bar, a sandwich bar, a fruit bar, a dessert bar, and then, the two main regulated hot dishes - that were printed on those papers (printed out on various colored papers, I might add). I generally went with the salad bar unless they served the fish sandwich and the fish was always on a Friday. To this day, no matter how many salads I ate for those 7 years, I still adore a salad. kili |

Sprouts For my first seven years of school, I was walked home for lunch. My mom was always there to serve me lunch. I have no idea why, but my sister who is four years younger, never came home for lunch during school days. My mom would usually make me a sandwich and a bowl of Campbell's soup. Sometimes, she would serve me a TV dinner. My mom's not the greatest cook in the world, but her lunches were good. Lunch had to be quick because all I had time to do was say hi to my mom, eat, then run back to school so I would be on time for my next class. After I started the 8th grade, school was too far to walk home for lunch (about two miles). I usually walked to/from school though. I usually ate lunch in the school cafeteria. I went to Wilson for 8th and 9th grades, then I finished up at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. I graduated high school in 1980. Both schools had the same lunch menus. There was a convenience store right across the street from the cafeteria entrance at Northeast High School. We were not supposed to leave school grounds, but we would sometimes run across the street and buy junk food if we didn't like the cafeteria menu or we would eat at a Burger King that's still across the street. Most times though, I ate whatever the featured meal was in the cafeteria. Rarely did I buy anything at Burger King. Lunch was usually okay. One day it was a hot sandwich item such as two mini cheese burgers, a meatball sandwich, or a Philly cheesesteak served with a choice of french fries or macaroni & cheese. Another day it was french bread pizzas, or lasagna, or pasta with meat sauce. Shepherd's pie was my favorite. The cafeteria also had a salad station and an area where you could buy cold sandwiches. There was usually a green vegetable, but I don't remember what the choices were. I usually bought my lunch from the cafeteria. I had a friend who was in at least one of my classes every year from 5th through 12th grade. He ate the same lunch every day. Never any variation. He would eat two peanut butter sandwiches on white bread and he would buy two containers of white milk from the cafeteria ... and he had a 100% perfect attendance record. He had to have homemade peanut butter made from fresh peanuts. He was a fanatic about how he made his peanut butter too; it had to be slightly chunky and with just the right amount of salt. One day, he showed me how he made his peanut butter. Not being a fan of peanut butter, I never tried it. |
