5. Lumpy custard
6. Liver
7. Semolina
8. Fatty or grisly meat
9. Blancmange
10. Beetroot

13. Macaroni
14. Butterbeans
15. Mince

When I was in high school, the chief cook must have liked this that she
produced frequently. We called it, "Purple Pudding" and it was a mauve
colored corn-starch gel (blancmange) flavored with almond!

Spinach, it was a nasty green slim.

That sounds, and tasted I'm sure, absolutely disgusting!

I adore "greens" like brussels sprouts and cabbage now - it's a wonder
considering what my school 'cook' did to them all of those years ago.

Carrots are the only vegetable I prefer overcooked for some reason. I
like them raw too, just not in the middle.

>> 4. Lumpy mash - like lumpy mashed potatoes

I quite like smashed potatoes - I just don't like mashed potato that has
lumps of undercooked potato in it.

>> 6. Liver - YUCK

Yum! Love it (now) with bacon and onions.

>> 8. Fatty or grisly meat - YUCK

Gristly meat is gross! I quite like the fat on pork and lamb if it's
well-done though.

Pickled beetroot is nice.

>> 11. Spam fritters - ??????

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_fritter

Me too.

>> 13. Macaroni -like

Me too. As long as it's not over cooked.

>> 14. Butterbeans - like

Me too.

>> 15. Mince - ground beef or mincemeat for pie? like both

Me too.

>> 16. Fish - like

Can't *stand* Salmon.

>> 17. Peas - favorite vegetable

Asparagus for me - even though it makes your pee smell!

>> 18. Stew - like many

Me too.

>> 19. Carrots - depends on how cooked

Overcooked or raw *only* for me please!

>> 20. Sprouts - bean sprouts? on a salad or in Chinese food then yes

No, Brussels sprouts.

I love that now - even out of the can - with lots of salt, butter and

I actually like the ones I left on the list.

In high school the food was very good, so good that the cafeteria lines
were very long so I ended up eating egg salad from the vending machine
or or ham sandwiches from home most days in order to finish and
socialize more quickly.

In college most of the food was good except for corned beef and cabbage
(about twice a semester) and liver-and-onions or bacon (about once a
month, always Friday nights) when we'd goto the Student Union instead.

Sir/ Madam,

you fail to appreciate the sheer delight of consuming this wondrous "slim"
that you accuse spinach to be. It is utterly delightful and should be
revered.

Canned peas!

You can jam the pizza into my ear with a plunger handle all day long, but
don't feed me no stinking canned peas.

They always ended up catapulted across the lunchroom via spoon.

I love spinach! Be it fresh and slightly wilted or canned and looks like
a cow-pat!

I hardly ever got hot lunch at school.

Bread and butter usually.

Once my lunchbox contained Mom's wallet. I had credit cards and cash and a
hot lunch AND chocolate milk that day!!!

Mom must've had some evening cocktails the night prior?

Remember that they had lunch meal printouts for the parents? On a day of the
week basis?

I think your mom had cocktails every day and night for the 9 months

We had that too. I could get it down, but it wasn't good in any way.
For me the worst thing was this semi-warm, gloppy "cole slaw" slop we
always got. It tasted like it was made with sour milk or something.
This was in elementary school, we got a "hot pack," a "cold pack" and
a little thing of milk and that damned rancid slaw stuff was in the
cold pack almost every day. Nobody liked it. One time me and another
kid named Chris Blumbach decided that maybe we weren't giving it a
fair shot and we both ate ours. I was on the verge of throwing up for
the next half hour or so. I don't remember Chris's reaction but I
don't recall either of us ever attempting that experiment again.

Yes! I remember the printouts! My parents used to pin them up on our
refrigerator.

I think that square sausage "pizza" wasn't great, but it was fair game over
the goulash. I always liked the fish sandwiches, but I avoided the
hamburgers (if you think they contained meat) like the plague.

Luckily, though, I was fortunate enough to grow up in a school system where
starting with Middle School and all the way through High School, you had
varied items to choose from for lunch. We had a salad bar, a sandwich bar,
a fruit bar, a dessert bar, and then, the two main regulated hot dishes -
that were printed on those papers (printed out on various colored papers, I
might add). I generally went with the salad bar unless they served the fish
sandwich and the fish was always on a Friday. To this day, no matter how
many salads I ate for those 7 years, I still adore a salad.

I only did cucumber and lettuce with O&V. Fish had to be in some form of
baked & breaded! Mrs. Paul's fishsticks or stuff on toast!

What's not to like about tapioca? It's so popular that pearl tea is a
big hit in Japan and the US.

None, I loved school dinners and the 'afters' were even better.. steamed
sultana pudding, yum! Jam roly-poly yum-yum! Trifle to die for.. but then I
am going back to the fifties.

Frog spawn as it was known in my childhood!

For my first seven years of school, I was walked home for lunch. My mom
was always there to serve me lunch. I have no idea why, but my sister
who is four years younger, never came home for lunch during school days.
My mom would usually make me a sandwich and a bowl of Campbell's soup.
Sometimes, she would serve me a TV dinner. My mom's not the greatest
cook in the world, but her lunches were good. Lunch had to be quick
because all I had time to do was say hi to my mom, eat, then run back to
school so I would be on time for my next class.

After I started the 8th grade, school was too far to walk home for lunch
(about two miles). I usually walked to/from school though. I usually ate
lunch in the school cafeteria. I went to Wilson for 8th and 9th grades,
then I finished up at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. I graduated
high school in 1980. Both schools had the same lunch menus.

There was a convenience store right across the street from the cafeteria
entrance at Northeast High School. We were not supposed to leave school
grounds, but we would sometimes run across the street and buy junk food
if we didn't like the cafeteria menu or we would eat at a Burger King
that's still across the street. Most times though, I ate whatever the
featured meal was in the cafeteria. Rarely did I buy anything at Burger
King.

Lunch was usually okay. One day it was a hot sandwich item such as two
mini cheese burgers, a meatball sandwich, or a Philly cheesesteak served
with a choice of french fries or macaroni & cheese. Another day it was
french bread pizzas, or lasagna, or pasta with meat sauce. Shepherd's
pie was my favorite. The cafeteria also had a salad station and an area
where you could buy cold sandwiches. There was usually a green
vegetable, but I don't remember what the choices were.

I usually bought my lunch from the cafeteria. I had a friend who was in
at least one of my classes every year from 5th through 12th grade. He
ate the same lunch every day. Never any variation. He would eat two
peanut butter sandwiches on white bread and he would buy two containers
of white milk from the cafeteria ... and he had a 100% perfect
attendance record. He had to have homemade peanut butter made from fresh
peanuts. He was a fanatic about how he made his peanut butter too; it
had to be slightly chunky and with just the right amount of salt. One
day, he showed me how he made his peanut butter. Not being a fan of
peanut butter, I never tried it.

I went to school near Reading (Wyomissing), PA, following our
emigration to the U.S. when I was nine years old.

I wouldn't eat the lunches at Peel Park in Accrington, Lancs. Many
unhappy days as the teachers would make me sit there and eat. I would
get sick.

Worst food: cabbage, I think.

Really? I've always liked it... but I've never had it enough to get
tired of it either.

My most hated school food was the white glue. They were too cheap to buy
the better tasting brand.

It's yummy when warm, just OK when cold.
Our favorite has a tsp. of instant coffee added when
the mixture begins to heat.

Blancmange is pudding made with milk, cornstarch, and
flavoring, i.e. chocolate, vanilla, butterscotch, etc.
just like the packaged pudding mixes of your childhood.
What's not to like?

You were deprived. We had big jars of white paste, mint flavored.

Yum.

Hey, paste.... *REAL* paste (the stuff you used for art) tasted good.
What the heck are you two talking about?
