Wow, I figured we were late here in CT, but Jersey is always much earlier.
To give you an idea of my age, I remember when they hit peak season,
tomatoes were 4 lb for a dollar and people were selling them out of the pack
of the pickup or station wagon.

Andy, you should check out the Wegman's hear in Cherry Hill, NJ. I was
there last week to pick up some product for a barbecue my sister and I
made my mom for her 70th birthday and they had a great selection of NJ's
finest tomatoes. I bought a huge beefsteak tomato to put on our
hamburgers and it was absolutely delicious. We also had some locally
grown corn that my brother-in-law cooked on the grill. It was fantastic!

We've had local tomatoes in Massachusetts for weeks now. I assume
your season starts earlier....

Darn, I've been enjoying them for weeks, and not just from
my garden, but the farmer's market or road stands.

Thanks for reminding me, I overslept and I want to hit the
farmer's market early.

Thank you ... I'm back with my haul ... everyone's corn was on
the small side, so I only picked up 3 ears. Going to have sausage
and peppers for dinner, the peppers are gorgeous. Got a couple
of personal watermelons because they made me laugh. I know
they'll be all rind. That's okay.

nancy,

I'll have to visit Gibbstown, NJ. There are a dozen or so farms off "main
street."

Jersey produce is some of the best in the world, IMO. I lived in Philly,
but we'd cross the bridge to get the blueberries, peaches, cantaloupes, etc.
The farms stands on Rt 72 had it all.

Tomatoes are late this year probably because of the cold spring and cool
nights.

And you do know that there are really fine tomatoes grown in PA?

Local corn and peppers have been outstanding quality this year. Tomatoes
only started to come in last week. A couple local farms grow the corn
with mixed white and yellow colors (can't remember the name) and you
could make a meal out of just the corn because it is so tasty.

I could probably eat ten or more ears of sweet corn before sunrise and
sunset, on my back, in the dirt.

And I have. Corn has been terrific this year. I like the mixed colors,
too. Some people like only the yellow. I learned here that the white
comes in early and the yellow later, I thought maybe the mixture was
bred to fill in the gap. Who knows.

Edwin,

I don't cross the Delaware river nearly as often as I should (only about 15
minutes away from Media, PA) for the NJ farm harvests

But tell us, who decided on cranberries as NJ's state crop?!? I figured the
tomato! The BUMS!!!

I was in Jersey 2 weeks ago and there were plenty of beefsteak tomatoes
at the farm stands in Central Jersey. Gorged myself on them, white
Jersey peaches (to die for!), and sweet corn - white and bi-color.

Go for it!

One name for the bi-color corn that I remember is "butter and sugar"
The name "sweet sue" comes to mind, but I'm not certain it's bi-color.

I am not knocking NJ produce by any means. There are fantastic quality
tomatoes that are grown in the eastern part of PA. Same deal too, you
don't find them in the supermarket. They come from a roadside stand or
someones garden. Lots of folks in my area have substantial tomato
gardens and sell them on a little table with an awning by the road.
Often those are really super extra good because they are heirloom
varieties that farmers don't grow because of the gentle handling required.

Thanks for the tip, Stan. I'll be up in Hatboro tomorrow and I'll check out
the Wegman's there.

Read an article in the Inquirer last week that the tomato season is running
real late this year due to weather conditions. Reduced crop size and late
maturing plants.

Need to find some for gazpacho tomorrow. I promised it to my daughter as the
app for her birthday dinner.

Jersey tomatoes are in now. But they are very late, as is most other produce
on the east coast.
On Long Island, the tomato crop is 'fair' according to 2 farmers I spoke to
last week. Too much rain and not enough heat. Usually they are knee deep in
Roma tomatoes this time of year. And the beefsteaks are not 'really' ripe.

Lots of land suitable for cranberry bogs, but I think one or two other
states produce more cranberry's then NJ.

I believe Wisconsin is the production leader.
