Default Cook-in or no?

I am throwing it out there to see if anyone would be interested in a Cook-in
at my house. I am in Marlborough Mass. Last one I had was in L.A. and since
I really don't know anyone out here I am not sure anyone would be up for it.

If I lived near the area, I'd certainly be up for it. As it is, living in
Arizona, I couldn't even afford to make it to an invitation to New Mexico.

Hi Janis,

I am a poster/lurker and I live in Newton. I'd be interested...
Up until about a year ago I lived in Hudson, so I am somewhat familiar
with where you live.

FWIW - Janis gives GREAT Cook-in!

Her LA cook-in was the first I attended and I have attended several since.

If you have never attended one it's a rare and wonderful experience.

Cooking abilities aside it's just a lot of fun and you don't have to be a 3
star Michelin chef to attend.

(I can't believe that I am bottom posting but I caught on that the reason top
posting isn't done anymore is because Google doesn't thread the posts)

Google *does* thread. The reader has to figure out where the "tree"

A link from the FAQ: <http://www.anta.net/misc/nnq/nquote.shtml>. If
still more reasons are required, I'll gladly supply them.

IIRC, you used to (bottom) post with MT-NewsWatcher. Now you are
posting with an even better newsreader, one of the best of them all.
You have no excuse.

ObFood: A nice recipe for parsley soup, from _Roast Chicken and Other
Stories_ by Simon Hopkinson.

Victor

Parsley Soup
To serve four

75 g/ 3 oz butter
2 large leeks, white parts only, sliced
2 big bunches of flat-leaf parsley, stalks and leaves separated, stalks
chopped
1 large potato, peeled and chopped
750 g/ 1 1/4 pints light chicken stock
salt and pepper
150 g/ 1/4 pint double cream

Melt the butter in a stainless-steel or enamelled saucepan and sweat the
leeks and all the parsley stalks gently, uncovered, for 20 minutes.
Coarsely chop the leaves of one bunch of parsley and add to the soup.
Simmer for 2 minutes. Meanwhile, blanch the leaves of the other bunch
of parsley in fiercely boiling water for 30 seconds. Drain and refresh
immediately under cold running water, then gently squeeze dry in a tea
towel.
Liquidize the soup with the blanched parsley to make a vivid green
purée. Pass through a fine sieve into a clean pan, add the cream,
reheat and adjust the seasoning.

First off let me say that it freaks me out that you know the news reader I
used long ago and *I* couldn't even remember which one it was. I had to
laugh at that one. Good ole MT-NewsWatcher!

Newsreaders used to be a hobby of mine and I paid particular attention
to Mac ones. So, I used to notice the relatively few posters, such as
one Janis Lane, using Mac newsreaders.

Hogwasher, your present newsreader, is very good, its newsreader module
being modeled on MacSOUP, particularly its graphical thread tree.
MacSOUP is still better as a newsreader (but not as a mailer), though.
I have had Hogwasher installed for years, but still use MacSOUP for
actual posting. In the sad Windows world, there is nothing remotely
comparable, but in the *nix one, there are gnus, knews and trn, which
are all nice in their own way, with the first one requiring years of
experience to be comfortable with.

ObFood: I've always enjoyed books by Edouard de Pomiane immensely.
Here's a recipe from his "Cooking in Ten Minutes."

Victor
Aïgo-Boulido
(Garlic Soup)

With one blow of your fist crush two cloves of garlic beneath the
blade of a knife. Put them in a saucepan. Add a bay leaf, a spoonful of
olive oil and then three-quarters of a pint of hot water. Salt.
Pepper.
Let it boil for eight to ten minutes. Take the saucepan off the
fire. Put two yolks of egg into your soup tureen. Add half a ladle of
your garlic broth. Mix it well. Pour in the rest of the broth, stirring
all the time. Add four slices of stale bread. Serve.
If there are two of you, consume this fragrant soup in unison,
otherwise the one who refrained would find it hard to bear the other's
proximity during the evening.

That be me :--) I remember when I worked at RAND that I used RN (readnews)
on my Sun station. RAND then got smart years later and gave us Macs along
with our Suns. Boy were THOSE the days!

Bottom posting is a little more readable is all. I tend to ignore any
thread once I find too many didnt trim. Going past pages of old post to get
a single 'I agree' at the bottom is a bit irritating after a bit.

I dont mind when I see the occasional top post though. My methods are
normally to trim, then insert comments all along the thread portion quoted.

Sloppiness, laziness and a bully type attitude (by some) here in rfc
that bottom posting is the proper way to post. I don't mind bottom
posting if I don't need to trim a bazillion lines, but it's just plain
rude to made me scroll past so many lines of quoted text.

Eh, I have just given in because it isn't worth getting ****y over it. When
I came back on rfc a few days ago I thought that we used to top post. Maybe
I was wrong. I don't mind going along with people prefer.

Would love to come but can't do it any time in the next couple
of years. I'm saving up for a trip to Montana in the fall of
2009. So, no vacation this year! :-(

Well..I have a longer stretch off in about a week or so...over the
weekend of the 12th. Maybe we should get out that cookbook and cook
from it. That plus having to use up some of the stuff in my freezer
and fridge might be a good excuse...LOL.

The only wrench might be that my landlord might be having to do some
work in the kitchen here..... Not sure if it will be major or not...

There is always something...LOL. If not something like that, it is
work...we hit a record for number of NICU admissions last month....and
we have all been doing so much overtime. I am tired!!!!

I will be in chat for the next few nights...as I am finally off for a
few days. Our census just went down a tad, so no overtime this
week... I will have time to chat.

A lot of them are premature...so not conceived during the holidays.
The teen pregnancies are going sky high lately...and premature babies
are often the result.
