I was just posting some photos on my blog about a tea we had last
weeked. Some of the tea cups used at the tea are from a family
collection, some I remember from childhood.
I remember mom had a special wall rack that the cups hung from and the
saucers were placed on edge on a grooved shelf above the matching cup.
The rack was three shelves high and probably 4 or 5 cups wide.

Do you think anyone collects tea cups anymore?

Ooooooooooh so pretty!'' My mother had a collection of teacups too.

My dad remarried after she died and I have no idea what happened to
them - or her mother's well seasoned cast iron pans 70+ years old in
1976. :-(

Heavens yes! When I had my antiques shop, I was amazed at the number
I sold...Great fun to trot out and use the way you did. My
Grandmother used to collect them & as a little girl I'd get to pick
one out to use for tea parties with her - made for some great
memories. Sadly, I have no idea where her collection went, but I
always think of her when someone pours me tea in a pretty cup.

Yes, I have a friend in Cleveland who has an extensive collection of
antique European teacups and saucers, mostly acquired through family.

My great-grandmother collected them. My mom inherited them and has them
displayed on a hutch in the dining room.

Thank you boron. The tea was very nice. My niece did a great job. The
caterer flaked out on her and she had to make tea sandwiches for fifty
plus with only a few days notice.

It seems I enjoy the tea more in a nice cup with a saucer.
We are fortunate to have the collection. Not anything expensive, just

but we rarely drink tea. I do know people my age with
very nice collections, begun one or two a year since
they were children.

How beautiful. I buy an occasional teacup but I plant miniature african
violets in them.

Jim recently came home with his portion of his aunt's teacup collection.
I had no idea it was such a popular hobby. They're beautiful, and I'm
glad we have them.


My taste has always run towards the hand crafted stoneware pottery. I
love outdoor art shows and usually end up buying a mug, a plate, or a
bowl. It started with all different mugs, but as the cabinet filled up,
I expanded to plates, bowls, and serving dishes. I can now set a table
with each piece on it all by different artists.


And now to discover that Jim's aunt had the same idea of setting the
table with all different tea cups. The aesthetic is different, but the
idea is the same.

I do! I have my grandma's collection, and I even have one with feet,
like yours. I think I only have about a dozen, but my favorite one is
black with roses on it- they are all pretty, tho. The painting is so
delicate! Are those all yours? That's a lot of cups!

Alas, I have no place to put mine, either! They're carefully wrapped in old
dish clothes and stored in a sectioned box (liquor boxes are great for
things like this!). I do have one I use for tea (on the rare occasions I
drink it). It was one my grandmother unwittingly duplicated... or was it
intentional? It's painted with a purple thistle, like heather. And she was
from Scotland

Very nice! My mom has a collection on a cubbyhole type of shelf, three
cubbies high and four across. The saucers sit in the groove behind their
matching cup. They look very similar to those in your photos -- all
different from each other and very delicate. She never uses them, though.

When my grandmother passed, I rescued her tiny china ashtrays when we were
cleaning out her house. They're big enough for like a single cigarette
butt. I don't use them (don't smoke in the house) but I thought they were
cute. Your cups remind me of those with their floral patterns.

We had a cookin' at the Bartos here in San Diego. They collect hand
thrown pottery and have some gorgeous pieces. She let me use one of
her pieces to serve my dish, it was beautiful but it made me nervous
to use a one of a kind hand made platter.

Most of the cups in the picture are the ones my mother collected, the
rest are my nieces. My niece is the one that ended up with the
collection, she loves and appreciates them and deserved to get them.

Yes we have several which were passed down and will (actually have gone) to
our daughters as starter cups.

There are several points to look for:

1. Fine china is almost translucent - hold the cup(s) to the light and
you'll see a vast difference between cups.
2. The finer the china the smoother the surface will be. use the saucer
as you would a mirror and bounce a light from a bulb off the surface and
you'll be able to see if there are any pock marks. Once again the smoother
the surface the better the quality.

3. I now look for cups at estate sales etc.

Thanks for those tips Dimitri. This all got me to thinking I could
squeeze in room for a few nice cups and saucers.
